View Full Version : When people are going to accept Big Brother has finished?

People said after BB8, that if ratings didnt improve for BB9 then we were done. They didn't, it was then said that the ratings had to improve for CBB, and they didn't.

The ratings aren't going to improve ever, and it's time to let it go, least let it go on a high.

I don't get why people keep saying that "bla bla bla is big brothers last chance", how many chances does it need?

I think this summer's BB should be the last. BB10...it just sounds right. I hope they do go out with a bang and not anything like the last two seasons though.

BB has settled in the 3-4m range for averages. The first few series were all inbetween 4.5m-6m on average so its just the same really but in a lower range.

It does good for C4 etc etc etc ... but changes are needed.

And if its going to go out on a high, then by default there has to be another series

Even though BB8 and BB9 rated awful for Big Brother, they were still doing better than most C4 shows
but with CBB6 its got to the point where C4 could put other shows on which could easily beat its ratings
If there isn't a major revamp for BB10, ratings will slip and it will be over for Big Brother
BB10 is the last chance, no major changes, no more series' after BB11

I do in my heart of hearts think it's dead now but BB10 is it's last chance to fight back, and I firmly believe with a complete revamp it would have a fighting chance of surviving.

However, I don't really believe we'll get the revamp the show requires.

Its obvious that if Channel 4 don't want it then it will go to Sky1 anyway, apparently they've always wanted it

I always love BB. Lets be honest ratings have dropped for most TV shows with the exception of family programmes like the X Factor or DOI. We have all got Sky+ now. I never miss an episode of BB but never watch it on time. I always record and watch it later. There must be so many people that do this it is no wonder ratings are going down. Eastenders and Coronation street never get the ratings they used to get.

The fact that BB still attracts 3-4million viewers on average has got to still be good.

I agree, it's a tv programme which can sometimes can be boring but sometimes is funny.

People take it too serious it's just a laugh but that thing before the annoucemnt of the winner was taking the biscuit.

But, yeah I still think it's ok last series was entertaining sooo.

That is taken into account in the ratings. The overnights consider those who watch the same night, while the officials consider those who watch within 7 days.

And the problem is the show is no longer attracting an average of 3-4m, this series it's been 2.5-3m most nights.

Tom

That doesn't mean its no longer attracting those figures though ...

The series has always fluctuated

People go on about ratings as if they're the be all and end all. BB6 was considered as having poor ratings yet it's my second favourite series. People need to change their perspective, the show will never be what it used to be and it will never attract the ratings it used to. Just stop comparing it to previous series and enjoy it while it lasts. If you don't like it don't watch it. The formula has so many variables which its success depends upon that it's impossible to predict how entertaining a series will be beforehand.

Well I still like it so I'd like it to stay on, I don't really care all that much about ratings.

The difference is BB6 was only slightly down on previous series, was still C4's highest rated programme of the day, still often won the slot, and crucially was still a critical success.

None of which apply to CBB6, which is significantly down on previous years, has often not been C4's highest rated programme each day, has struggled to come 3rd in the slot, never mind 2nd or 1st, and crucially, is far from a critical success.

BB the concept isn't finished, in-fact it helped spawn the incredibly successful 'reality show' format. BB on C4 however is on it's deathbead because the brand is tainted and aimed at the wrong audience.

Please C4 sell the franchise to SKY!

Yeah I think if BB10 doesn't have some huge changes to the show then it should get axed after BB11. It's become such a poor show, I used to always look forward to watching the evictions etc. but now that feeling's just gone. I don't even care if I miss episodes now because I know I won't have missed anything much.

Tbh I don't care about the ratings, I will watch every series until the end but I know it will be over one day.

Big Brother is not as bad as people make it out: of course we've had expectations which producers ignored and try to avoid any controversy but the show is still good and enjoyable.
I can't see why people are so linked to the ratings. Of course you're right not to watch if you think it's not good but not because it gets bad ratings.
I have faith in the production team, I'm sure if they break their ass, they can create something big, good ratings or not.

I stopped having expectations after BB7 because it was awful IMO and didn't top any of the past and next series.

Because without viewers they can't get the advertisers. And without the advertisers the show isn't financially viable.

A couple of years ago C4 could fend off the critics by saying that although you miight not like it, BB brings in a good income for the channel. That excuse is no longer valid.

James
24-01-2009, 12:46 PM
I'd still say it brings in good income from the Cahnnel, even with lower ratings. There was a story recently about how all commercial broadcasters have seen a drop in advertising revenue but C4's drop in January was only 5% down because of BB. Apparently a 5% loss is seen as good result or something.

Not sure there is much they can do to halt the decline in ratings, the show just needs to get its reputation back a bit.

To be honest I thought this Celeb BB was okay, on a level with previous series. (I liked Celebrity Hijack a lot though btw ) But there is a tendency for people to judge it based on the ratings rather than how much they enjoyed it.

Brekkie
24-01-2009, 01:04 PM
That revenue would have been based on predicted ratings though, which would have been higher than the 2.5m we saw most nights and certainly more than the 3.3m we saw yesterday.

And people aren't just judging it on the ratings - it's quite clear that long term fans of the show didn't enjoy this series.

And there is alot they can do to get the ratings back, because if they don't they won't get the reputation back. I just hope that the reluctant fools at C4 finally sit up and realise they're letting one of their best shows whither away and realise they need to reverse the decline. Big Brother finals are supposed to be one of the TV events of the year, and get it right in BB10 and they could unquestionably get that figure back up above 6m, if they give the show the overhaul it requires.
