Things are looking pretty gloomy for Ugly Betty.
In a just-announced Thursday night scheduling tweak, ABC is benching Betty beginning March 26 and replacing it with episodes of Samantha Who? and the new Megan Mullally-Cheryl Hines comedy In the Motherhood. The network's release concludes by saying, "Ugly Betty will return to Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m. following the run of In the Motherhood and Samantha Who?"
After crunching the numbers, that puts Betty's return (provided Sam Who/Motherhood don't tank) sometime around (gulp) June -- a.k.a. outside the regular season. Now, granted, Betty hasn't exactly been killing it in the ratings this season, but it's still one of ABC's signature shows. At least I thought it was.
"The Thursday night block is a good opportunity to launch these comedies," counters an ABC spokesperson. "That said, Betty is a solid performer and there

So that means the rest of the season will be shown in June, off season. So ABC obviously has no faith in the show and may not be picked up for a fourth season

Wow I was surprised it got picked up. I mean I adored the first two seasons but S3 just seemed tried and unoriginal throughout.
Yay! I'm so glad a 4th season has been confirmed. I love sexy Betty.

That won't matter, when it comes back in June if the ratings aren't good enough for ABC they can still axe it. Always happening with American shows.

No if there's a 4th season announced then it's happening since contracts have been signed and such. ABC could end up sued by the production company and/or it's production crew if they do not commit to it. If a new season of anything has been announced then it's happening.
America can be quite harsh with cancelling shows but cancelling it now when the fourth season's gone into production could be way more costly then actually just showing a fourth season then ending it if it doesn't do well.

Those Mega Strikes gave the Bosses
a chance to cut back even more
getting fresh stars even cheaper
and under Brand New Contracts.
The only way it can be saved is someone like Letterman
or Jay Leno
starting a fight to keep it on air.

Nothing to do with the writers strike, its because stupid ****ing americans have the attentions span of a gold fish!
So as soon as viewing figures balance out or dwindle even slightly they cancel it!!
Its ridiculous

It is to do with the Strikes as on each return
many gave up
so the Teams have changed.

So glad it got picked up for a fourth season but that only happened because the alternatives failed.
But I don't think it will get a fifth season

That only works with pilots/ or series in their first series that are still in the trial period.

Bad news for Ugly Betty
It has been moved into the Friday night slot for the 2009-10 season.
Cancellation looks certain after season 4

In America
Its typically seen as the night which shows are moved to before they get cancelled as they aren't good enough to be in a better slot on another night
So ABC obviously have no faith in the show and look set to be getting rid of it after season 4

John.

well. i have to admit, as much as it has it's positives, it has ten times more weaknesses! at least they can bring it to an end if they do cancel it!

I think the third season starts in the UK in June
Who knows. A handful of ABC shows don't make it through the fall season. It's such a shame because UB is one of ABC's best comedies.
I really doubt that..
ABC also announced that it is moving “Ugly Betty” to Friday nights at 9, where it will compete against “Dollhouse” on Fox. In recent years, Friday has been where networks sometimes send underperforming series to die, but Mr. McPherson said the move does not indicate a loss of faith in the viability of “Ugly Betty.”
“I love the show,” he said. “But you look at what it’s done on Thursday nights, and I think we have a great opportunity with ‘Flash Forward,’” the new drama that will be featured at 8 p.m. Thursdays. “Sometimes you have to make some bold moves.” is correct.

Friday nights = death.
