The Crusades was to re-take the former lands of the Roman Empire that the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire) had lost due to the Arabs...
Of course many joined the Crusades just for the booty to be gained in such events.

The Arabs stole lands in the 7th century... That is the birth of the eastern crusades.
