Singer Chris Brown has taken his name off the shortlist for Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards in the US because of the assault charge against him.

The 19-year-old was arrested in Los Angeles last month after a row with his pop star girlfriend Rihanna.

His spokesperson said the singer appreciated the nominations but felt "the incident last month has shifted the focus from the music".

Brown was up for both favourite male singer and song at the 28 March awards.

On-line petition

Children's TV network Nickelodeon had received calls from parents asking for Brown to be removed from the shortlist.

An online petition calling for his name to be withdrawn had drawn over 10,000 signatures by Wednesday. The case had been widely publicised after a police photo, alleged to show a beaten Rihanna, was leaked onto the internet.

Nickelodeon had offered Brown its support. Spokesman Dan Martinsen said: "Chris Brown was nominated by kids several months ago based on his body of work as performer, and the kids who vote will ultimately decide who wins in the category."

But Brown's spokesperson said that the singer was voluntarily withdrawing from consideration.

"Chris very much appreciates the support of his fans and the honour they have paid him in the way of nominations for favourite male singer and favourite song," he said.

"While Chris would like to speak to his fans directly about this and other issues, pending legal proceedings preclude his doing so at this time. Once the matter before him has been resolved, he intends to do so," he added.

The singer said after the incident he was "sorry and saddened" and was seeking counselling. He faces up to four years and eight months' imprisonment if convicted.
