I didn't know where to post this, it's a kinda debate but it's not a serious one..?
A new skyscraper has been planned and work has begun on it on Friday. Once built The Shard will be the biggest skyscraper in Europe and the second biggest in the world being an impressive 1017ft high. It is one of several that have been planned.
But what i was thinking is, Is It Worth It? What Is The Point? But saying that i don't mean i hate the idea of it, infact i would love London to have the second biggest skyscraper in the world, but what do you think?!
Please discuss and share your views! Do you like The Shard?

Pointless waste of money. It's practical to a certain extent, but not to justify the spending.
*waits for Ross to say how much he hates London*
It looks so glamorous i love it and it's so random only trouble is you can never go in these types of buildings only people who work there can i tried it with the gurking.

I dont think there is a point really? Unless its going to be used for something remotley useful.. Other than that it does look quite nice i suppose! But for some reason REALLY tall buildings scare me haha
I remember reading about this ages ago when it was still in its conceptual stages. Interesting that they've began construction. It hasn't changed much from the designs I saw. I think it's hideous and looks so out of place on the London skyline.

I do agree.. It is really out of place but it is there for a reason. There was already a tower there.. London Bridge Tower.

I guess the revenue they get from it being a hotel or renting out the office blocks could... in the long term... pay it off.

Apparently this is HELPING the recession. I still dunno how that adds up. This and 4 other buildings should be completed by 2014

It's being made in London which is perfect for attraction and income. It's the capital city, so there's always going to be pointless and weird things being done to make the city better. 2012 is approaching fastt.
It won't be the second tallest skyscraper in the world at all.

The CN Tower is the 2nd tallest building in the world?
It stands at 553metres so would come 2nd to only the Burj Dubai.
And Donald trump is looking to take the record for worlds tallest sky scraper off the Burg Dubai,
This is the link:
http://www.arabianbusiness.com/523066-bid-to-trump-the-burj-for-tallest-title
And i saw a programme on the building of it on discovery channel so it has at least started buliding.
It has points in it at heights of other sky scrapers in the city so its split into like 4 bits, the bottom bit is as tall as a sky scraper then bottom and middle is as tall as another 3rd bit is as tall as another then it has its own top bit to make it the tallest.

It seems a bit like they are trying to cheat by having a lot of the top part just for a radiator, and people can't really go up to the top. I think they should measure buildings by how far up people actually go, not just putting a giant cap on the top to make it look taller.
The Canadians are the most ridiculous with their CN tower, which basically has no real space in it, it's just a big stick with no real space in it, but they love talking about how tall it is.

London's Tallest Building Officially Unveiled
G2FMdD9Lahg&feature=related
The tallest skyscraper in the EU has been officially unveiled in central London.
A spectacular light and laser show has marked the formal inauguration of the Shard, a gleaming feat of glass and gravity-defying engineering that stands at 309.6 metres high and now dominates the capital's skyline.
A combination of 12 lasers and 30 searchlights lit up the night sky from the 95 storey building, which towers over existing landmarks such as 30 St Mary Axe - "the Gherkin" - and One Canada Square.
The display was accompanied by live music from the London Philharmonic Orchestra and came after a ceremony attended by Qatar's prime minister and the Duke of York.
Rising from the depths of the economic downturn, thanks to an almighty investment from Qatar, the skyscraper has been £1.5bn and 12 years in the making.
First sketched on the back of a restaurant menu in Berlin in 2000, the designs received planning approval in 2003, but securing the finances took significantly longer.
Funding stalled during the credit crunch, until Qatar intervened in 2009, taking on 95% of the investment.
Sheikh Abdullah Bin Saoud al Thani, the governor of Qatar Central Bank and chairman of the board of directors of Shard Funding Ltd, said: "The Shard is the newest London landmark and a beacon of the city of London's resilience and expansion, even during tough economic times."
"It is a symbol of Qatar's belief and commitment to London both today and in the future."
However, the skyscraper's office space has yet to be occupied - it will open with 26 floors vacant, although the developers say they are in discussion with a number of companies to fill them.

Arista it looks fantastic,i would love to do that, lucky you:hugesmile:
Its cheaper if you pre book
you have to put all your keys coins and any bags
through a Security box reader.
Then 2 lifts
first to floor 69 and then best floor 72 in the open air.
There is no rush all lifts have a amount they pick.
If you ever go pre book and make sure you print the barcode
for fast track entry
