View Full Version : Yorkie Bars - Should they be boycotted while Nestle bars females from them

Sticks

It has been a while now since Nestle introduced it's sexist campaign banning females from their product with their "It's not for Girls" slogan.

When they introduced this, Liverpool City council had to ban people working for Nestle who had been distributing free samples, only to men.

Even a director at the time seemed to indicate they did not want females touching their product, saying they should switch to other products.

Ever since their campaign I have boycotted this chocolate bar, which I used to love eating.

I have written to Nestle and all I got was a form letter

I have even joined this group on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=2256140283)

So how can we get Nestle to change it's campaign and allow women to enjoy this product.

It is interesting to note that while McDonalds in 2006 bought into this sexist campaign with it's Yorkie McFlurry. In the 2009 Yorkie McFlurry, the "It's not for Girls" is absent

Erm. I think it's a joke?

To be fair, they're probably losing business - I wouldn't dare go into a shop to buy one if it has it slapped across it's not for girls. I don't care much about the chocolate to do that LOL.

I can imagine a wanky AD executive saying " yeah it'll cause lots of controversy and therefore free publicity... ". And then another one saying " yeah!! people will fall over themselves to look pro feminist by starting forum threads about it, there by getting our name out there even further!!".

Its just a joke... women can buy it if they want, it is a play on that it is really chunky chocolate and that girls can't handle it. I'm not gonna stop eating it, they are lush!

Would you buy a pink fluffy pen with "really gay girly pen" written across it, just cos it writes nice? ... Hahaha... maybe I just have hang ups, but I hate buying Yorkies when it's slapped right across them that it's for men.
Not that I'm against the ad campaign, if I was a man I'd buy them more, huuuarrrrr!

People are over-sensitive these days. If I want a Yorkie, I'll effing well buy one, and I don't give a flying **** what it says on the wrapper.

Its just a joke, an advertising angle not to be taken seriously

There are always people who take these things seriously, and it usually results in ads being banned etc. All the good ads get banned cuz they offend someone.

When McDonalds in 2006 did their Yorkie McFlurry they came up with this image

http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2376/25/16/642840893/n642840893_1949796_1156.jpg

Note how violence against women is implied with the product crushing the female figure

In 2009 the same product was advertised differently

http://photos-b.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-snc1/v2376/25/16/642840893/n642840893_1949801_5977.jpg

Note the absence of the "It's not for Girls" logo

If it is just a bit of fun, why did McDonalds stop using this sexist logo?

I did wonder, back in 2006 if any female might not be allowed to buy a Yorkie McFlurry. What would have happened if a server back then had refused to serve a woman, or worse a young girl one of these, because they saw the promotional materials saying it was not for girls.

Could the manufacturers be seeing the light? I got this this afternoon from the garage on Barak Road in Newcastle. No mention of the "It's not for Girls"

Let us know if more of these are coming or if the manufacturers are going back to their old ways

Sometimes I think you're quite literally political correctness in human form Sticks. The whole advertising campaign's a light hearted play on the age old men VS Women thing. The reason why they might have dropped the 'not for girls' thing is probably because they came to the end of that advertising campaign.

Similarly, McCoys crisps are marketed at men (Think the slogan is "MAN CRISPS" but I might be wrong). There's also a Strongbow (I think) advert that's targeted to men.

I still use both of those products.

Though I still can't tell if Sticks is having a laugh?

Sticks
09-06-2009, 11:13 AM
Those products may be marketed at a particular gender, but not exclusively. They were not deliberately excluding a target market

The Yorkie Bar "It's not for Girls" slogan is exclusive. On the surface it was prohibiting one gender from the product. (See the early TV adverts at the time)

I still wonder if with the 2006 campaign for the Yorkie McFlurry any females were barred from ordering it, either by staff or some other third party taken in by the advertising. If I had been working there at the time, I do also wonder if I would have sought clarification if we could sell them to females and pointed out that the slogan did seem to contravene stated equality statements.

The 2006 Yorkie McFlurry advert was portraying putting a woman down, by crushing her with a potof the product, (Shades of violence), and that reminds me of one person I know who thinks men are superior and that woman should be put in their place, implicitly by all means available, including force.

It was refreshing that the 2009 McFlurry made no mention of that imagery.

If I remember I will see if this campaign is continuing. It is possible the garage had cancelled export order for a market where this campaign is not being used.

Matt08
09-06-2009, 11:18 AM
:laugh2: I can't believe this is in Serious Debates. Surely there's more important things to be worrying about than whether a Yorkie bar might offend women.

Sticks
09-06-2009, 03:38 PM
The Yorkie bars in the newsagent were the ones with the It's Not for Girls slogan, so that boycott continues

The one from the garage must have been some kind of anomaly

but clearly your boycotting idea is null and void if your buying them:shrug: its a advertising campaign it is not a attack on women why only yorkies in this if your gonna do it then you should like someone said be including mccoys as they are man crisps in the advertising which is the same princple as the yorkie

This guy is joking, Right???
