The sequel to Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will be the start of a new spinoff series, it has been announced.
A teaser trailer from the Game Developers Conference showed the game dropping the series name, with North American retailers quickly following suit, according to Eurogamer.
Publisher Activision later confirmed the change to GameSpot: "Modern Warfare has taken on such a life of its own, it has become our focus now."
The sequel, developed by COD4 developer Infinity Ward, will now be a spinoff from the Call Of Duty series, with Treyarch handling the other games.
Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has been one of the most popular console shooters, clocking up over 14 million users in the last 18 months.
