That's because C4 own the right to Big Brother in the UK and Ireland.

Yes, RTE cannot air an Irish version of the show because of C4. Even so, it's probably better off. I mean they do have auditions in Dublin and C4 have more time and money to invest in the show than RTE ever would.
RTE are always trying to adapt and create reality TV shows to stop trying to pay the few to buy the right to the show. I think they closest they've got to an Irish BB was a show called 'Cabin Fever' - which was one of the biggest reality disasters ever. It was set on a boat, and the boat crashed...twice.
They have started to air an Irish 'Dragons Den' though,. which is actually good.
