Has the compact disc died because of iTunes, Limewire etc.. & if yes, do you think it will ever come back?

I still buy CD's but I never play them. All my music is played on iTunes or YouTube/Last.FM if I'm on another computer.

I don't think they've died. If they had, there wouldn't be any more made. Some people still buy CD's, it could be for party's or something, but there are loads of people who still buy them.

If the question was; do i think that sales have decreased since the itunes and Limewire came along, the anser would be yes.

No not at all.
And now in Japan they are making better
than 24bit CD BluSpec Disc Sony CD
and Super High Material JVC/Universal CD.

Also DT5.1 disc
SACD 5.1 discs
and DVDA 5.1 discs
all can not be downloaded.

So the youth can have poor quality MP3
because they are pissed half the time.

But Adults Have CD's.

Sign Of The Times.

I haven't bought any CD's since 2003. I discovered e-Mule and all that stuff to get them free.
It hasn't died out yet because people still buy them but it's heading in this direction, definitely.

They do still count though, they just don't make much difference

CDs will never die out,Vinyl is still around. Collectors and fans will always want more than just a digital version.

Like for example Madonna is planning on doing a greatest hits album later in the year. I will still buy it even the tracks are on the internet.

Singles do count.

That's why there is a download chart. If CD's didn't count there would be no point in a download chart.

I prefer CDs to MP3s. There's something pleasing about having your music in physical form, rather than a piece of data. But they're a dying breed.

I will always buy CDs and Vynil.
I play CDs and Vynil everyday. I also use iTunes.
I hate illegal downloads, more respect to the artist/band you love is to buy their music to help keep them around for longer. I love buying CDs and looking at the artwork inside the cases. You get what you pay for.

Magic

I think so, although CDs still prove popular with the older generation.

Personally, I usually only download now, although if I am buying a album sometimes I will get it in a CD form from Play.com as it works out cheaper, and then upload to my PC.

But I do like CD's; it seems a lot more funner playing a new CD than download! :S

I know what you mean.
When I buy a new CD I just sit in my room and listen to it all. Its more exciting getting to know the album.
The CD needs to be more popular before the new download generation kills it off.

They're overshadowed by digital downloads, sure, but for example, it's easier to play a CD in a car than getting a digital download onto an iPod, then getting an iPod adapter type thing for your car - why would you bother when you can stick the CD in? So until they find an easier way to do without the CD in that particular scenario, I refuse to accept CDs have died out.

I still buy CD and vinyl. As others have said, I like the phyiscal product. A download has no value to me. If a mate came in to the pub with a bag from a record shop I would ask what they had got and if I could have a nose. I am yet to ask if I can have a look at someone's digital file.

My latest buy was a vinyl album by Eddy Grant from a charity shop. 50P. Bargin. Including the class "Do you feel my love"

This is the new better than 24bit CD
SHM (Super Hi Material) CD JVC /Universal labels.

Sold in Japan
and Imported.

The other New CD also better than 24bit
is the BluSpec CD by Sony.
Like Earth Wind & Fire has been upgraded
to this new BluSpec.

Sony and JVC had a battle over VHS and Betamax
many years back.

But on these new better sounding CD's
they both work in any CD player.

Kids can have MP3 - poor quality sounds

And Adults
we have Quality Hi Fi.

It's just so much better to have the actual album rather than a song on a computer.

SACD and DVD-Audio were higher quality and were meant to replace CDs but the formats didn't take off because of MP3 and the fact you really needed a 5.1 setup.

Some people still prefer the vinyl sound over CD, saying it is richer and fuller...

Nurse57
19-04-2009, 06:06 PM
I don't think SACD and DVD-A didn't take off due to MP3. It was more due to the fact that to get the higher quallity sound from the wider bandwidth you needed a special player and most people did not want to fork out on a new peice of kit when they were happy with the sound of CD. That and the small fact that they did not market it very well. Warner music released the first DVD-A's. But if you called their head office no one there knew what they were. If they made them but did not know where they are then it had no chance.

On the vinyl vs CD argument. I once put an Arcam CD player at £1200 up against a Mitchell Gyro SE record deck at the same sort of price. I played the same tracks on CD and vinyl. Although CD was cleaner (no clicks and the like) the vinyl was warmer and a nicer sound. Not so clinical.

James
19-04-2009, 06:21 PM
DVD-A is also a bad name for an audio format. :D Most people associate DVD with video.

There's a bit here about the reasons people might think vinyl has a warmer sound - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gramophone_record#LP_versus_CD I must admit, to my ear, it is not necessarily better fidelty but does have a deeper, less tinny sound.

Nurse57

"DVD-A is also a bad name for an audio format. :D Most people associate DVD with video."

I can't agree more. This is what happened when I called Warner to find out were I could get some discs to have a play with, as I had a player but no discs. They kept wanting to pass me to the section that did music DVD-V. I had to point out to them that their own format was going to fail if they did not know what it was.

I prefer mp3s because I never use CDs. I never use my CD player. I always use my laptop, or my ipod.
I'd like to have the CD equivalent for the sake of it but I'd actually never use it.
I have no interest in getting a car, and if I did, I'd want one with a tape player so I can use my iPod :]

Yes
SACD 5.1 , DVDA 5.1
and DTS 5.1 disc are the best.
I have one Poineer player that plays all three
it has a chip for each.
DTS music discs are the best now as most DVD players have a DTS chip in them.

These 2 new CDFormats (SHMCD / BluSpec CD)
are the best in CD
above 24 bit.
But never like 5.1 mastered dics , of course.

DVDA is not much made now
But SACD gets another boost as Hybrid SACD 5.1 disc
that also play on normal CD players.

Some SACD's are not Multi Channel so they are 2.1 mix
with DSD Mastering.
They are not as good as Multi Channel SACD.

MP3 is compressed sound
like going back in time
bad sound, not good enough for me,
Ideal for lazy kids , though.

Thats about the fifth time you have said that. Lots of kids buy CD's. Especially young kids without access to computers who buy pop CD's. My dad downloads everything and I buy CD's. It is down to the person. It has nothing to do with age, you miserable tit.

OK not young kids.

But it is True
that many kids at school and College/Uni
only want MP3 which is the worst ever in sound
but they do not care
as they have there sexy MP3 player
and many have the all important
for Lazy kids - Illegal Downloads.

I was on a Bus in London, last week,
and these girls got on all with MP3's blaring away
and they all shouted as that was the only way to talk to
each other.
Then they started Screaming.
It was like being at a Zoo.

I still by 12" vinyl and CD's, chart music is more download i'll say.

Vinyl is still here and selling, should have died years ago but underground dance music has kept it alive, even hip hop... The art of DJ'ing.

arista
25-04-2009, 08:02 AM
Yes I buy 12" singles
some are rare remixes,
and some play at 33, of course most play at 45rpm.

They sound louder
and are Ideal for DJ's.

Instrumental versions are good as well
letting you mix something on top of that.

"But SACD gets another boost as Hybrid SACD 5.1 disc

Hybrid SACD has been out for ages and has not really had much impact. Yes there may be more discs out there but if they are played on a a normal CD player you only get the 2.0 mix at the normal CD sampling rates and frequencies. So there is no improvement over a normal CD. To get the improvment you will need to buy a SACD player, or a DVD player with SACD playback. And as I have said most people won't do that as they are happy with CD.

arista
25-04-2009, 10:26 AM
Hybrid SACD
sells to those that have SACD systems or Pioneer
& the like units that
play them all.

Of course it is Hi Fi people that buy these
but many labels now do Hybrid SACD.

Genesis put all there CD's out in DTS and Hybrid SACD 5.1
a great job by Nick Davis remastering.

It is all down to choice.
Many adults & kids are happy with bad sounding MP3's

"Of course it is Hi Fi people that buy these"

And there not enough of us out there for the format to ever really take off and become mainstream. Most people would be able to improve the sound of their kit with something as simple as correct speaker placement. But as they are happy with the sound as it is they don't bother or know about doing that.

In the end I got shot of my SACD player for two reasons. Lack of music, and more importantly my CD player sounded better.

arista
06-05-2009, 11:29 AM
Yes I avoid one system only.
I can see your problem.
Pioneer made SACD/DVDA/DTS 5.1 all in one
that made great sense to me.
