^Its not all about killing people. It's still a worry even if its just flu symptoms.

Normal influenza kills tens of thousands of people in USA alone, and hundreds of thousands of people around the world every year.

When swine flu gets to even a fraction of that, I'll begin to think twice about it. As for now I'm going to get on with my life and not get paranoid or take precautions about something which probably isn't going to be any bigger than the SARS problem.

Media: Serious business.

http://doihaveswineflu.org/

Nothing to do with being paranoid. Nothing wrong with taking precautions, but that's a choice up to the individual.

I believe normal influenza kills about 7,500 in the UK every year. We are at level 5 alert over this, and taking precautions does not hurt. There was a full page ad in the paper today urging people to use tissues when sneezing, and then binning them and washing their hands afterwards. We are being urged to take precautions. No hardship.

It has just been announced that 5 French people have serious swine flu symptoms. None has been confirmed yet, but will if this is the case later tonight.

Therefore Sarkozy put the French health warning level on the next to last one. One left to be put and we're screwed.
Scary.

Get plenty of exercise because exercise helps build your immune system. Walk for at least hour a day, go for a swim, take the stairs instead of the elevator, etc.

Wash your hands often. If you can’t wash them, keep a bottle of antibacterial stuff around. Wear a mask when out in public places and avoid going out in public as much as possible while the swine flu is spreading. Get lots of fresh air. Open windows whenever possible. Get plenty of rest. Try to eliminate as much stress from your life as you can.

OR …. You can take the doctor’s office approach. Think about it, when you go for a shot, what do they do first? Clean your arm with alcohol.. Why? Because alcohol kills germs. So…… I put on my mask, walk to the liquor store (exercise), I put lime in my Corona (fruit), celery in my Bloody Mary (veggies), drink on the bar patio (fresh air), get drunk, tell jokes, and laugh (eliminate stress) and then pass out (rest). The way I see it, if you keep your alcohol levels up flu germs can’t get you!!!!

It said in the paper today that masks are no use and that if you wear one you still have just as much chance as catching it.
What are the symptons of Swine Flu? Is it just a really bad case of the flu? Because when I get flu I can't even leave the bed, my body goes into shut down mode.

8 Confirmed cases in Mexico...
This is what annoys me the most when the say that there have been 166 or so deaths in Mexico and discreetly say about the 8 confirmed cases to have had the Swine Flu.
Once again the media have caused alot of people in the UK to panic, when really at the moment there is nothing to panic about. I believe that the decision to raise it Phase 5 is just a precaution more than anything. Just basic hygiene practise will stop it from spreading, and just generally being cautious I mean those deaths in Mexico can be down to it being a poor country, there hospital not being that clean, and poor NHS service, people living too far away from hospitals etc...

I'm not worried at all and I work in a Supermarket, so if I was to catch anything, I'm 90% at risk I'd say. I'll continue to work. I've been ill for 2 weeks, just recovering I am not sure if you can be ill that quickly again.

Just take pocket-tissues with you everywhere and hand gel or wet wipes.

First UK flu transfer case confirmed

The first case of the new deadly flu strain in Britain has been confirmed in a patient who had not recently been to Mexico, a health official said on Friday.

The man, from Falkirk in Scotland, is the 10th person in Britain to have tested positive for the new strain of Influenza A (H1N1) but the first in Britain to have contracted without having been to Mexico himself.

Graeme Pacitti, 24, is a friend of couple Iain and Dawn Askham who returned from their Mexican honeymoon with the virus.

"I've said I actually started to feel better than I have all week just hearing that news, I'm quite gutted really," he told BBC TV.

He said he started feeling ill last Saturday after meeting up with Iain Askham.

The newly-weds, who were the UK's first swine flu cases, have spoken of how they feared they might die from the disease.

"You try to stay calm but at the back of your mind there is the possibility that you might die," Iain Askham, of Polmont, near Falkirk, told the Daily Mail.

He and his wife believe they caught the virus on a flight back from Cancun in Mexico, during which several passengers were coughing and sneezing.

The couple returned to their home on Thursday having been treated for five nights in separate isolation rooms at Monklands Hospital, Airdrie.

"It was particularly hard to bear, because I knew that Dawn was next door and that she wasn't well," Iain told the newspaper.

All those who had previously tested positive had recently travelled to Mexico, are said have mild symptoms and to be recovering well.

The Health Protection Agency said a ninth patient from the northwest of England had also been confirmed with the virus on Friday while 642 others were under laboratory investigation.

The government has been stockpiling anti-viral doses and has launched "Catch it, Bin it, Kill it!" adverts, urging people to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues, throw them away and then wash their hands.

No offense mate but 1918 is a bit different than 2009... compare the difference of health care during this time.
This flu does not scare me one bit, no one has died outside of mexico minus for one person who came from mexico anyway. There is no signs that it is killing anyone, people are being cured by the Tamiflu tablets. Papers are using the flu to scare the public into buying more papers, it is a sick way to make money, they have hyped it up so much, maybe if you leave the flu something will happen, but just get treated for it!

But that part of history has no relevance anymore, The advances we've made since then means that this will be different to that time. We have medicine that can combat the virus. we have a plentiful supply, moreso then any other country (I think if I remember correctly, the UK and France are the best prepared countries.

So far all the cases in the UK have been caught and the people quaratined, if we carry on like this until it dies down we won't have to worry about our own country. I'm more worried about it spreading to third world countries. It could potentially be catastrophic to those countries.

I'd guess the UK is a quarter of that.... swine flu has killed between 27 to 120 depending on whether you believe the WHO or the Mexican Govt. So calm down.

My concern is for people with immune system problems. They receive a free flu jab each year, so normal flu isn't a huge risk for them. Obviously this is...

Arista, with all due respect, please read my point. ANY flu is a killer to people with weak immune systems. The only reason they're not at risk of normal flu is because they receive the jab, but of course the jab doesn't help toward this strain.

oh .. your thinking of your parents. I heard that they've already sequenced the genome of the virus and you can expect a vaccine in 6 weeks ( don't quote me... memory bit fuzzy about that). That might be an idea for your olds.

I hope so, thanks for that ange I didn't know that. Not just my parents, but elderly people and people with motor neurone diseases and stuff are always ignored when people say it isn't deadly.

More than a week after the swine flu outbreak rattled the world, with cases of infected people popping up from Mexico to South Korea, the new virus strain has shown up in a herd of swine.

The catch, Canadian officials say, is that the animals may have caught the flu from a human.

Canadian officials are quarantining pigs that tested positive for the virus -- scientifically known as 2009 H1N1 -- at an Alberta farm in what could be the first identified case of pigs infected during the recent outbreak.

They said the pigs may have been infected by a Canadian farmer who recently returned from a trip to Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak that has sickened more than 680 people.

The farmer "may have exposed swine on the farm to an influenza virus," said Dr. Brian Evans of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

"We have determined that the virus H1N1, found in these pigs, is the virus which is being tracked in the human population," he added.

This is no good news.

Also, a vaccine against swine flu will be released in November according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I don't think they're exactly comparable. One is an airborne virus that you can't stop yourself from getting, and can be deadly to quite a large portion of the population. One is usually an unsightly and uncomfortable STD brought on by those thick enough to not understand protection.

By that I mean, everyone is freaking out over this killer disease so they go out and buy masks yet there is already many killer diseases out that need a mask but no one tend to use it... the condom. Not necessarily comparing, just pointing out the hype behind this and putting it into perspective.

Q: What makes a complacent person take notice?
A: ?

What is the problem with being cautious? If this becomes a huge problem, I want to see what those who say "so what" have to say.

Those who do nothing until it becomes a bigger problem. Those who are lax in attitude. They will be asking for drugs when they get ill. They scoff but it could happen to anyone of us. Why can't people take precautions? What is the great hardship?

There are no precautions to take though, all we can do is sit and worry. I am choosing not to worry about it. Masks cannot protect people from this flu.

It is pretty much on the same level, it is just a different type of flu, it does the same thing... it just came from a different place. People will die from it for the same reasons people die from the flu.

Because there is more chance of you catching normal flu which is just as bad. Last time I caught normal flu my muscles couldn't move.

To be fair, at the moment flu is more "out" than swine flu - that's why with flu you sometimes get extreme cases.

With swine flu it's only just appearing and spreading, so the potency hasn't had a chance to show itself. Virus' don't just reach their optimum potency within the first few transfers.

Like I said, anyway, flu - people can get jabs. Swine flu - people can't. Not all of us are young with healthy immune systems.
