View Full Version : "Killer pig flu threat to UK"

I'm sure most of you would of heard of this at some point during the past week.
Fears are growing that a deadly human strain of 'swine flu' that has claimed 81 lives in Mexico has arrived in Britain. A British Airways cabin crew member yesterday complained of 'flu-like symptoms' midway through a flight to Heathrow from Mexico City, where the virus first surfaced. Last night the unnamed man, understood to be a British national, was in isolation in a West London hospital and was being treated by staff trained in infectious disease controls. Earlier, panic spread throughout Mexico, where those who died were reported to be the first victims of a pandemic with the potential to kill millions. Experts said the virus posed the biggest threat of a pandemic since bird flu began to spread in 2003. That has killed 256 people in 15 countries.
Rest of the article here (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1173263/Killer-pig-flu-threat-UK-BA-crew-member-rushed-hospital-68-die-outbreak.html)
I'm not that concerned at the moment, but it does sound quite serious.
Any thoughts on this?
Omg. I have been ill for 12 days now :/ it's not shifting. I'm constantly coughing and being sick. My mum, dad and one of my brothers are ill too.

Have you been to a doctor? & did they say what you had?
Hope you feel better soon though.
No because I thought it was just change of season I always get ill around these times when the weather changes because of my asthma.
Mmm this is a new strain of flu, no vaccines and yet potentially contageous and dangerous.
If you feel ill go and see your Doctor. OK so who will treat the Doctors when they become sick?
Good point
LOL
There is only one way this doesnt spread and thats to stop Mexicans From entering this country and to stop planes/Ships going over there

I agree, I think all flights etc to and from Mexico should be stopped, to stop it from spreading.
What I'm confused about though is whether the cases they are reporting are just the ordinary influenza or the Swine Flu, as I read that those who were affected in California are now better and that is has cleared up. But then they so many of the people they have died have had the Swine Flu... I'm not really sure as each article I read is saying something different.
Well I've been ill so if I die you know it's here

DR. MARC SIEGEL: The Most Powerful Virus Is Fear Not Flu
With a new swine flu strain spreading among close to 1,000 people in Mexico and at least eight in the U.S., and with 61 reported deaths in Mexico, the most powerful virus pushing out its tentacles is not flu but fear. We are afraid of what we don’t know and what we don’t understand.
We hear about an unseen killer and we worry that we will be next. The best antidote for this kind of fear is the facts.
So let me take on the fear-laden terms. The first is pandemic. A pandemic means a new flu virus infecting people in several areas of the world at the same time. It can be mild, moderate, or severe. Everyone knows about the 1918 Blue Death that killed over 50 million people worldwide, but how many people realize that the last pandemic, in 1968, ameliorated by vaccines, antibiotics, and public health measures, killed only 32,000 in the U.S. and 700,000 worldwide, less than many yearly outbreaks.
The current swine flu outbreak is not a pandemic, as the outbreak is confined mainly to Mexico, but if it does become one, it is far more likely to be the 1968 variety because of modern public health measures and because we have been exposed to several parts of this virus before and have an immune memory to it.
Precautions like isolating sick people and use of the anti-virals Tamiflu and Relenza in order to decrease severity are wise precautions.
Wise too is closing schools in Mexico to prevent spread (schoolchildren are notorious flu spreaders), provided that this measure doesn’t send the world the wrong message that a massive pandemic is in the offing.
The second scare term is the pig itself. Pigs scare us. They are filthy noisy creatures. They are also loaded with flu viruses. This strain occurred because a bird virus mixed with at least one human virus and two pig viruses. Flus are changing all the time so a new strain
isn’t really a surprise.
We also need to be cautioned by the lessons of history. Back in 1976 an emerging swine flu virus appeared to be responsible for the death of a military recruit at Fort Dix (this later turned out to be erroneous), sparking a massive public hysteria fueled by Center for Disease Control press conferences.
I was reminded of this Friday when the CDC again spread fear about an emerging swine flu. We need to remember that fear causes people to take less precautions, but fighting contagions requires more precautions.
In 1976 Gerald Ford, trying for election, ordered 40 million vaccinations over a three to four month period of time, probably leading to almost 1,000 cases of ascending paralysis from the hastily made vaccine (Guillain Barre Syndrome) and driving most of the vaccine makers out of business. We certainly don’t need a repeat of this performance, in advance of any real worldwide threat.
Thirdly, we are also afraid because this disease is emerging in Mexico, a foreign land to the south over which we have no control. But fear of an unknown land doesn’t automatically translate to an American health risk. We are wise to have our scientists and public health officials tracking the outbreak, but we are not wise to anticipate the worst.
Like all flus, this one causes great fatigue, muscle aches, fevers, sore throat, nasal congestion, stomach upset, but is generally curable. The greatest risk is from secondary infections like pneumonia or ear infections, especially in the chronically ill. But in the U.S., if it spreads here, these problems are much more easily treated than in rural
Mexico.
We should be comforted by the time of the year. This is the end of the flu season, not the beginning. Flu viruses thrive in the low humidity of winter, not summer. It is very likely that this outbreak will die out automatically as the summer comes. It will remain necessary to track it because it could reappear in the fall, but it is very unlikely that it will erupt into a pandemic this summer.
I am glad that this outbreak is a swine rather than a bird flu, not because pig viruses are intrinsically safer than bird viruses, but because the greater lesson to guide us here comes from the 1976 pig hysteria, rather than from the 1918 bird flu plague.
Flu viruses thrive in the low humidity of winter, not summer. It is very likely that this outbreak will die out automatically as the summer comes. It will remain necessary to track it because it could reappear in the fall, but it is very unlikely that it will erupt into a pandemic this summer.

It will be worse come end of this year and early 2010..
The bug will already be here, already hit new york plus many won't be ill but might carry it.
Many die from flu in the uk anyway, plus if it was that bad then millions would be ill in mexico..
Cancer is still a bigger killer.

Seems that the guy from the UK tested negative.
But seems like there are more cases being reported...
* Eleven confirmed infections in the US
* In addition, eight suspected cases are being investigated at a New York City high school where about 200 students fell mildly ill with flu-like symptoms
* Ten New Zealand students are among a group which travelled to Mexico have tested positive for influenza A - making it "likely", though not definite, that they are infected with swine flu, said Health Minister Tony Ryall
* In France, a top health official told Le Parisien newspaper there were unconfirmed suspicions that two individuals who had just returned from Mexico may be carrying the virus
* Spain's health ministry says three people who returned from a trip from Mexico with flu symptoms are in isolation and being tested
* In Israel, medics are testing a 26-year-old man who has been taken to hospital with flu-like symptoms after returning from a trip to Mexico
* But a UK hospital conducting tests for swine flu on a British Airways cabin crew member said the tests proved negative.

Pig /Bird /Human.
So you have 3 mixes of Flu.
Avoid anyone returning from Mexico
tell them you will catch them in 2 weeks if they are alive.

Quite some interesting comments too about the whole thing...
There is a sense of chaos in the other hospitals and we do not know what to do. Staff are starting to leave and many are opting to retire or apply for holidays. The truth is that mortality is even higher than what is being reported by the authorities, at least in the hospital where I work it. It is killing three to four patients daily, and it has been going on for more than three weeks. It is a shame and there is great fear here. Increasingly younger patients aged 20 to 30 years are dying before our helpless eyes and there is great sadness among health professionals here.
I think there is a real lack of information and sadly, preventative action. In the capital of my state, Oaxaca, there is a hospital closed because of a death related to the porcine influenza. In the papers they recognise only two people dead for that cause. Many friends working in hospitals or related fields say that the situation is really bad, they are talking about 19 people dead in Oaxaca, including a doctor and a nurse. They say they got shots but they were told not to talk about the real situation. Our authorities say nothing. Life goes on as usual here.
It sounds quite worrying really that the authorities are not telling the truth but I still dont think people over here should be concerned.

What I fine odd about this is that its a combination of pig, bird and human flu... Surely something like that can only be created in a lab not just naturally.

Swine flu has always existed, just never been a big "thing". I guess during the bird flu epidemic it mutated.
What I find weird is that some experts have said this combination would reek person-to-person infection (which is potentially massively deadly). We've heard some tales about person-to-person infection too... yet "WHO" are saying it's not.
I'm hoping they're telling the truth rather than preventive panic measures, cos if it's person-to-person - the affected radius is ever spreading.
Also, the anti-viral won't help in the long run. Obviously we need to use it to save lives, but the more instances it's used - the more the virus can mutate and beat the immunity.

What there saying now is that they might be some other causes, or another virus in Mexico that (at the moment) has only led to deaths there. But theres just so much confusion at the moment.
Lauren
27-04-2009, 04:42 PM
They're offering too many alternative explanations. For example, like you said - they've said they think there's another illness in Mexico which is why it seems more deadly there.
BUT then in the same press conference, the "WHO" release info that they don't think they have another virus in Mexico, and it's just because there's a higher incidence rate over there that it seems more deadly... and if Europe had as much cases here as they do there, we'd have deaths too. So which are we to believe??

It's on phase 4 out of 5 at the moment. If it climbs one more alert level, we'll be basically closing our borders and wearing masks.
Mainly precautionary though, so don't worry. Personally, I don't see it climbing to phase 4, though it shows it's worse than bird flu (which stayed at phase 3 iirc).
Edit: Just noticed on Sky News they seem to have a media blackspot on the new alert raising? Looks like they're trying to prevent widespread panic.

You're right actually, I got confused cos they do it in stages rather than individual numbers. I still think 5 means closed borders and masks, 6 just denotes that it's sustained. It won't get anywhere near 6, and won't get to 5.

Phases 1–3 correlate with preparedness, including capacity development and response planning activities, while Phases 4–6 clearly signal the need for response and mitigation efforts.

Arista, your main point is "it can be treated". Yes, at the moment, it can. But there's a reason they're not giving the vaccine to everyone that has become symptomatic. Releasing the vaccine so early into the pandemic could cause the virus to mutate and beat the vaccine - it sounds unreal - but it happens all the time over small virus' and is a very real risk in this one too.

The virus can no longer be tracked. ANY chance of containment has long gone, trust me. The only way this is going to go is the eventual demise of the virus, which mightn't be for a while.

I think what most people who are worried think is that when you have it, your its going to kill you when that is not necessarily the case.
Officials have confirmed so far out of the 159 or so deaths in Mexico 7 were only by swine flu.
They say 40% of UK might be infected with it, IF theres a pandemic, which doesn't mean all of that 40% are going to be seriously ill with it. It seems the death rate has slowed down in Mexico.

5 confirmed cases in the UK. 2 in Scotland, 1 in Redditch, 1 in Torbay and 1 in London.
Egypt began slaughtering the roughly 300,000 pigs in the country Wednesday as a precautionary measure against the spread of swine flu even though no cases have been reported here yet, the Health Ministry said.
The move immediately provoked resistance from pig farmers. At one large pig farming center just north of Cairo, farmers refused to cooperate with Health Ministry workers who came to slaughter the animals and the workers left without carrying out the government order.
"It has been decided to immediately start slaughtering all the pigs in Egypt using the full capacity of the country's slaughterhouses," Health Minister Hatem el-Gabaly told reporters after a Cabinet meeting with President Hosni Mubarak.
Egypt's overwhelmingly Muslim population does not eat pork due to religious restrictions. But the animals are raised and consumed by the Christian minority, which some estimates put at 10 percent of the population.
Health Ministry spokesman Abdel Rahman estimated there were between 300,000-350,000 pigs in Egypt.
Agriculture Minister Amin Abaza told reporters that farmers would be allowed to sell the pork meat so there would be no need for compensation.
In 2008, following fears over diseases spread by animals, Mubarak ordered all pig and chicken farms moved out of population areas. But the order was never implemented.
Pigs can be found in many places around Muslim world, often raised by religious minorities who can eat pork. But they are banned entirely in some Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Libya.
In Jordan, the government decided Wednesday to shut down the country's five pig farms, involving 800 animals, for violating public health safety regulations.

The UN's World Health Organization has raised the alert over the spread of swine flu to level five - one short of a full-blown pandemic.
A phase five alert means human-to-human transmission in at least two countries.
The move comes after a 23-month-old Mexican child died in Texas - the first death from swine flu outside Mexico, where the outbreak originated.
In Spain, officials confirmed the first case of swine flu in a person who has not travelled to Mexico.
Announcing the increased alert level, WHO Director General Margaret Chan urged all countries to activate their pandemic plans - including heightened surveillance and infection control measures.
She said action should be undertaken with "increased urgency".

Yeah, 'cos I want to die.
And the US gained independence from Great Britain, so stop fulfilling the dumb, ignorant American stereotype.
Oh my! Did you just correct me? That was sarcasm, and a joke! The whole thing flew right over your little head didnt it? Go get yourself some sense of humour pills, it might help! Just the fact that you feel the need to correct me, shows your inability to see the obvious.
Oh gosh, I'm so sorry.

That's not strictly true? Some people have self-attacking immune systems that are more at risk of contracting influenza AND it being more potent. I'd have thought they'd be first in line to receive any anti-viral treatment, including Tamiflu.

this will get worse there is no doubt about it and it wil only spread the only reason those scottish people got better is because they were in isolation it's going to get to a stage were We can't control it we can't put everyone is isolation. 6 people will soon turn into 60 then 600 then 6000 then 6 Million

I have been reading through this thread for the first time today.
Some people are so inconsiderate. I know that the media can make something look 100 times worse than it is, But if people are genuinely scared, no one can turn around and bitch... it's not fair.
The cynics just need to remember that it have been upped to a level 5, one more upped level and it will be a pandemic. it is very vey likely to be a pandemic and millions of people are scared. Grow some common decency....

Think how many people are unconfirmed?
If I felt ill, was coughing, feverish - I WOULD NOT go to the Drs or anything about having goddamn swine flu, I'd just keep it to myself. I assume a lot of people would also do this.
I'm never a fan of media panic, but we know the media get something out of causing panic. But the WHO? What do they get out of causing panic? Nothing. It's against them if they cause panic, yet they think there's something to be concerned about.
8 cases in the UK, we come into contact with about 100+ people per day, assuming we leave the house - walk down the street, work etc. That's per day, and that's only from the confirmed cases.
There's a lot more people than confirmed with it. The numbers aren't minimising, they're only just emerging.

Mexico have had it since January! Our cases are only emerging. What about people with weak immune systems? Do they not matter to you?
The two people that got better got treated almost instantly after coming back from Mexico and are healthy young individuals. Right now there's people with it that don't know about it - not getting treated - and maybe not as healthy as the two Scots.

Just been someone from the W.H.O saying that going up to phase 5 is just a natural and inevitable step up to phase 6. Basically, it's not if we'll go to phase 6, it's when.
Like I said, some people don't seem to understand the cases in the rest of the World are just emerging! No point quoting the Mexican deaths, they've had it months.

I understand people that are thinking like this, but then you really have to think why the W.H.O would put it as phase 5 going onto 6 if there wasn't anything to worry about. It's in the LEAST of their interests to do this without any good reasons, then again, I think us Brits are infamous for the line "it won't happen to me".
Wow, its really growing now. I wouldn't say I'm too worried about it as most people are just suffering mild symptoms and recovering outside of Mexico, but I saw on the news last night that it should die down during Summer and hit again, worse during the winter and start killing people, which, I don't really understand as Mexico isn't a winter climate. Meh, it just confuses me haha. Oohh and btw my mum has basically sold Tesco out of anti bacterial hand wash and the mini pocket size hand sanitiser things LOL,

Definitely; although I like to think I'm not being one of those in denial morons who refuse to accept the facts in front of them, I guess I am! I can understand the threat level issue; because of the far reaches that this virus has had, so the potential for a global infection is a much greater risk than it was when it was just in Mexico - but it's only been spread through tourists coming into contact with it and coming home again; and the few cases that have been recorded over here in the U.K. are being contained (although I'm sure there are many others out there that haven't been recorded yet.) My problem with the "pandemic" label is that it comes along with mass panic; which is the worst thing that can happen in this situation. Avian Flu and SARS ended up being nothing to worry about (at least, over in the U.K.) same with Mad Cow Disease and so on. I find it interesting that this has become a "global" issue in the middle of the recession - nobody's talking about the recession anymore; I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but I do think it's worthwhile noting that this happened during the Credit Crunch.
However, I'm not so pig-headed (lolol) that I won't pay attention to the W.H.O's warnings, there is a good reason for them and there's no point in just ignoring what they have to say; they're the experts, not me.

You cannot stop coming into contact with people but trying to avoid situations, like being packed in a busy tube carriage with hundreds of others. and your face in someone elses, as much as possible cannot do any harm.
Normal influenza kills tens of thousands of people in USA alone, and hundreds of thousands of people around the world every year.
When swine flu gets to even a fraction of that, I'll begin to think twice about it. As for now I'm going to get on with my life and not get paranoid or take precautions about something which probably isn't going to be any bigger than the SARS problem.
Media: Serious business.
