Pandemic 'could kill 750,000 in UK'

Up to 1.2 million people could end up in hospital and 750,000 killed if a flu pandemic sweeps the nation, according to draft Government guidance about an outbreak.
As hospitals are "rapidly" overwhelmed by patients, doctors may have to begin operating a lottery system for intensive care, the blueprint from last year adds.
It also warns that a worst-case pandemic scenario of "catastrophic severity" could result in the "complete or partial collapse of some or all hospital infrastructures".
Top medics have downplayed the predictions, saying factors like Britain's high state of readiness and high immunity levels will lessen the impact.
The bleak forecasts come in "Pandemic influenza: Surge capacity and prioritisation in health services", which was prepared by the Department of Health (DH) last September.
It says up to half the UK population - or 30 million people - could get influenza if the bug outbreak turns into a pandemic.
In the worst case, there would be 2,000 hospital admissions per 100,000 people - or 1.2 million people. There would also be 1,250 fatalities per 100,000 - or 750,000 people.
The report says: "Over the entire period of a pandemic, up to 50% of the population may show clinical symptoms of influenza.
"This could result in the total healthcare contacts for influenza-like illness increasing from around one million during a 'normal' season up to 30 million."
There are also grim implications for the demand of the nation's estimated 3,450 adult intensive care beds and 320 children's.

750,000 is a terrifying amount of people!! I know there is 60m in the world, but it will decrease our population by around 1m.... isnt it about 2-5% of the UK population, sounds little but it really isnt.

1250 deaths per 100,000 isn't too much considering the death rate each year of normal flu. Hopefully won't get this bad.

why don't they think positive instead of sayingOMG WE'RE GOING TO DIE all the time??
it's just a flu and there are cures... so whats the problem??
Scarlett.

Live on SkyNews the Scottish Medical crew
just said they will look at America for better data
as more have it.
But as only a baby died, (mexican baby visting texas)
this is Still not a Killer Flu.
Of course in poor areas of Mexico
they can not get meds easy , so deaths were normal
for that reason.
Unless it infects someone with another illness
and it Mutates again.
But that is a big 'If'

Yep, That's SO True!
I think it will be about 45 Confirmed cases in the UK by Monday and then on Friday I think they will be about 230 Confirmed cases.
It can only get worse.
I ordered a Pack of 50 Masks on eBay today and I bought 4 Big Hand Sanitizers and 2 Small ones

MSN news is rubbish. That's in the EXTREMELY worst case scenario. Normal Flu kills more people each year then Swine flu has so far. We're one of the best prepared countries in the world, all the medical expects have slammed these figures. Don't let the media scare you, they're just aiming to create a narrative so that you keep reading them to find out what happens next.
Swine flu is only really dangerous to really young and old people, the reason why Mexico's been so badly affected is because they generally have a poorer level of healthcare. We've got a lot more drugs which are more readily available to combat it. As lnog as you take care and be hygenic there's nothing to worry about for the moment.
