View Full Version : Will [Insert Artist here] be around in 5 year's time?

I haven't seen a thread like this so I thought I'd start one. Basically you've got to discuss if the artist who's the current topic will have any longevity and or will disapear.
The first artist is LADY GAGA.
Lady Gaga's has had huge success all over the globe but I don't think she'll be around in five years time. I think her music lacks variety. She'll definately get a second album but I think people are becoming bored with her, nevermind the fact that she's quite egotistical (She considers herself a work of art??!?). If she can lose the attitude and try to be more malleable when it comes to music then maybe she will. The problem is that her target audience tends to latch on to the 'next big thing' if she's not careful she'll be forgotten.
What are you're thoughts?
WILL GAGA BE AROUND IN 5 YEARS TIME?
Yes: 50% No: 50%
WILL THE SATURDAYS BE AROUND IN 5 YEARS TIME?
Yes: 6 No: 7
WILL THE TING TING BE AROUND IN 5 YEARS TIME?

Gaga is a one (album) hit wonder

Hopefully not.
And I can imagine people getting bored of her as her music is quite repetitive and similar sounding, so I don't thinks she'll be around a decade at the most.

In 5 years time she will be hardly heard of.
Her music style just cannot go on for 5 years. She would need to change, and then everyone would dislike her.

No, She will never quite get the fame she wanted and she will never be like Kylie/Madonna

Music's a lot more sensational and selective these days - with the rise of the internet, the elitism of popular (teenage) culture and the decline of physical sales and television performances.
If you look at musicians that were big 5 years ago - there are indeed a few that are still around. Keane, Scissor Sisters, Britney, McFly, Eminem, U2, Girls Aloud, Robbie Williams.
But there also plenty who've disappeared now - Busted, Michelle McManus, Natasha Beddingfield, Shapeshifters, Anastacia, D12, Ronan Keating...
I think that music is a lot more 'viral' nowadays and whilst you can be lucky sometimes in securing a one-hit wonder (see Orson, Sandi Thom, Daniel Powter for example), although you might have had more success in the 80s/90s, you're much more unlikely to today. Music is a business now, and a very saturated one.

I think she will be around. I think she is creative enough to sustain a career. She might be an overnight recording sensation, but she is the prodcut of the underground, and has been doing her thing for a long time. I think those types of artists can usually maintain, and always stay current. She will never get old!
Some answers: Bored with her? says who? If anything she has more and more fans!
Her music lacks variety? Dance music has been around since the 90's now, and its pretty much the same since. People still lie it, so the variety thing is a non isuue.

I think Lady GaGa is very versatile.
And I do think she will be around in 5 years time. Fame like that just doesn't disapear.

I think she loves her work and music too much to give up/become unpopular x

It's not JUST gonna be about her, I'll change it every once in a while.

Natasha Beddingfield is very popular in America though..
Lady Gaga's a one trick pony; so until she releases a song that's different to everything else she's done, there's no way she's making it past five years; I give her three tops if she stays the same.

I can see her being around for a very long time while keeping her uniqueness.
I think she will be able to change enough to not become repetitive and boring unlike most artists who are currently in the charts

No I don't think she will. She's pretty much this years Katy Perry - known for releasing very catchy, up-tempo hit singles and then release something slow that doesn't quite match the success.
Lacks variety? what bullshit.
Listen to Just Dance
Listen to Brown Eyes
Listen to Poker Face
Listen to Again Again
Listen to Starstruck
Listen to Paper Gangsta
her music is very variable from pop, electro, dance, techo, ballad-pop, rock n roll, r&b, hip-hop and blues.

Cant be sure, I mean she is great, and will be one of them who are still remembered in 20 years time, but not sure if she can carry on

I doubt that very much.
Scarlett.

Why not? She took the music scene by storm, so she'd be remembered for that at least
Shaun
02-05-2009, 05:19 PM
By her fans, maybe, but she's hardly had the same revolutionary impact on the music scene that artists did 20 years ago. See Madonna, Depeche Mode, The Stone Roses... even some people on here won't recognise the two last names there, which is awful really, but there are musicians who've come and gone since then with the same popular impact she has had.

Sure, but who does revolutionary change the music scene these days? :puzzled:
Course Gaga will still be around, she's unique, she can sing to different types of music and she's worked towards this for years with the Haus of Gaga.

I've grown bored of Gaga so let's talk about someone else! Feel free to discuss her more but now the new artist to discuss is THE SATURDAYS.
I think it could go either way at the moment, They've been quite successful got a tour and are monopolizing on their success with a new album this year. I think it depends on the success of the second album and if their fans are still behind them. If their next album is successful then I think there's every chance they'll be together in 5 years time.
Lewis.

Well, i will always love the saturdays! In my opinion, they are a great band and i hope they are as succesful as Girls aloud! They can all sing live, (Whcich i will be witnessing at theri tour (L)) and i just hope they do not split as they get older
Harry!
02-05-2009, 06:53 PM
The Saturdays will always be the underdog girl band imo. You can never compare them exacly to Girls Alod or even the Spice Girls
Scarlett.
02-05-2009, 06:54 PM
I like the Saturdays, more so than Girls Aloud and Sugababes, I dont see no reason why they cant still be around in 5 years

THe saturdays? :laugh::laugh::laugh:
Cmon!!!
ACtually, come to think of it, since Girls Aloud are still singing, then who knows. They are awful, but Anything is possible in the UK!

Hmm. I'm not sure. I have a sneaking suspicion they'll fail to get a second album deal...and if they do, it'll flop.

The UK I believe has the best music scenes in the world I believe, We've produced some of the best bands of the past (Beatles, Rolling Stones ETC) We have a thriving indie industry, We do pop music like no other country and our rock heritage is legendary.
The likes of Machester, London<<<<<<<<<<<<<<LA, New York any day.

Yeah, I was taling about the Saturdays, and Girls Aloud. Of course the UK have great artist, who said they didnt? I am talking about the lame ones that have been around forever, like Girls aloud. Or the current subject, the flippin saturdAYS:laugh:
AS for having the best music scene in the world? Ermm dont think so whatsoever! You have some good moments, like last year was pretty good, but overall, its not!

Oh I misread what you said for that I apologise. I'll respectfully disagree with your last statement though but I will enquire your opinion on what country you think has the best music industry and scene.

Perhaps they put a toe into other genre's but in actuality she's only doen two genres there - pop and electro pop. Pokerface, Just Dance, Starstruck, Paper Gangsta, no variety there.
Lady GaGa can only do two types of song, a stripped back, quirky ballad or a robotic dance pop song. No variety there.
I'm not too sure if she will or not. She certainly has the potential to, but whether or not she'll be able to adapt is a whole new question.

Now for The Sats. Personally I see nothing special enough about them to help them last. However if or when GA split, then that could give them a boost. But if their second album under sells, they'll be dropped.
The Saturdays have another year or two in them; but they've not been overwhelmingly popular like Girls Aloud were (and are) when they first started, although to be fair Girls Aloud did have weeks of coverage through Popstars. The Sugababes are gone(?) it seems, so I don't see any reason why the Saturdays can't stick around, although their second album's going to have to be incredible.

No i dont think so. I think they have few more albums coming , but i think there doing stuff atm idk what though.
but Catfights and Spotlights didnt sell very well.
With The Saturdays , Umm well i love them to bits atm idk how long they will last. There 2nd album would have to be proper good. Some GA fans dont really like TS. But good luck to them. I hope they will last longer. And like someone said up there If GA split then they could get a boost. - but i think GA is doing another few more albums.
I have no doubt that The Saturdays will be around in 5 years time, but whether they deserve to be is another thing.
supernoodles!

I don`t think the saturdays will be around in five years time,I just don`t think they have the fan base behind them, maybe two years at most

I really doubt the Saturdays will stay around, they had a success with a battered version of Depeche Mode and they're just not that rememberable, i'm surprised they've lasted as long as they have

NEXT ARTISTS!
The Ting Tings made a huge splash last year with both mainstream audience and indie audiences. They were a hotly anticipated band. Now that the first album is done and that they are working on a new album do you think they'll be around in 5 years time?
Like with The Saturdays I think it hinges on the second album, If they can show growth and pull out a good second album then definately. Ting Tings are interesting since when they were gearing up their first album they were the critical darlings of both the mainstream and indie scenes. I think it'll be interesting if they choose to focus on one scene or both.
I think they've got a great chance of being around in 5 year's time if their second album delivers, since generally if you can get two good albums out you'll generally be guaranteed a career for at least 5 years. It does depend on which audience they focus on though.
What are your thoughts?
MrGaryy
03-05-2009, 05:00 PM
I think they will definitely be around but not to the same degree of success as in 2008. The novelty has worn off for people now, only the hardcore fans will remain interested. Unless of course they decided to go a new direction such as electropop then that could secure a year or two more at the top.

I think 5 years from now Rihanna will still be one of the biggest pop stars on the planet along with Katy Perry and Beyonce.

tbh I hope she goes away for about 3 years or so and then comes back with another Rated R
