View Full Version : Is it Legal?
Basically im an IT Technician at a secondary school as most you know and it was the year 11's last day on Friday, so they did the annual prank of setting off the fire alarm, i then discovered after this the fire alarm system was switched off for the whole school, so i went to investigate and the power on light was off and there was no sign of life on the fire panel, is this illegal??

I'm not sure I get what you mean? Was the whole alarm system off? Someone is in charge of making sure it works, with regular testing. Find out who.

Do you mean is it illegal for their to be no fire alarm set up for the school?
Read the last thing of this: http://www.fire.gov.uk/Legal+responsibilities/
Under the heading Schools.
"This requires that every part of a school building, and of the land provided for a school, shall be such that the safe escape of the occupants in case of fire is reasonably assured."
Or have I misunderstood? LOL

the system was intentionally turned off so that it couldnt be set off, i.e if smoke was detected the no alarm would sound or if a call point was broken it would not go off.

Then yes, that is illegal. Who turned it off?

So if someone was on fire right next to it, it wouldnt go off? Is that what your saying??? x

You need to report it to your supervisor in my view.

yup, theres no way of it going off unless someone with a key and code for the control panel sets it off.

i did mention it a few months back and they said if theres a fire phone reception and the site manager will enable the alarms.

lol they would be in for it then, one of these days we will have a real fire then they will be in alot of trouble.
Apparently the reasoning for the disablement is the lower the amount of "nuisance" alarms.

Ring up the fire service (NOT ON 999, haha. On their actual administrative number) and ask to remain anonymous, because it's partly their responsibility too - so if you go to the papers with it, they'll face the brunt.

Jeez... putting people at risk to lower the nuisance factor is unacceptable.

exactly, i'd rather spend 20 mins outside because of false alarm than sit in a buring building

Yup. I agree.
Ok, general question here Rob. How old are you? Cuz I used to think you were 30-something, then you said you weren't.
What is your actual age?

I guess his hearing aid must have been faulty :blush2:
UPDATE: the alarm is now back on, as we all found out when they set it off at 8am this morning for 25 minutes "as a test" and told us to ignore it. Now they have cable tied the lids on the fire callpoints so they cant be opened to raise an alarm lol!
