EastEnders was the big winner at the eleventh annual British Soap Awards, taking home seven prizes on the night.

The Walford-based show scooped the best soap accolade for a second consecutive year, while its veteran actress Barbara Windsor (Peggy Mitchell) was presented with the lifetime achievement award.

Other victories for the BBC One programme saw former star Robert Kazinsky (Sean Slater) named best actor, Scott Maslen (Jack Branning) voted sexiest male, and Maisie Smith (Tiffany Dean) winning the prize for best dramatic performance for a young actor or actress.

Finally, Nina Wadia (Zainab Masood) went home with two awards. As well as triumphing in the best comedy performance category, her scenes with Nitin Ganatra (Masood Ahmed) helped to secure the best on-screen partnership prize.

Meanwhile, Coronation Street received six prizes on the night, including best actress for Katherine Kelly (Becky Granger), sexiest female for Michelle Keegan (Tina McIntyre) and best exit for Rob James-Collier (Liam Connor).

Completing the ITV1 soap's haul, Gray O'Brien (Tony Gordon) was voted as villain of the year, Craig Gazey (Graeme Proctor) was named best newcomer and writer Peter Whalley went home with the special achievement award.

The BBC's daytime soap Doctors won three prizes at the ceremony - Anita Carey (Vivien March) triumphed in the best dramatic performance category, 'A Kind Of Hush' was declared best single episode, and Vivien's rape plot was named best single storyline.

Emmerdale picked up one award, proving victorious in the spectacular scene category for Victoria Sugden's (Isabel Hodgkins) ice accident.

Despite picking up the highest number of nominations on the shortlist, Channel 4's Hollyoaks went home empty-handed.

Thank god that Hollyoaks won nothing! Maybe they'll get the message and axe the show for good.

Eastenders is the rightful winners and will always be the greatest soap.

Sorry to all you Hollyoaks fans though

It's a shambles that Hollyoaks won nothing when it's probably been one of the best soaps on TV for the past two years. Corrie and Eastenders has become really dull as of late.

I think it's probably because hollyoaks attracts more of the younger generation, where as EE, Corrie and Emmerdale are a mixture really...:conf:

Yeah it just doesn't get the recognition, ussually however it gets the critic's awards like Last year it won a fair few. The thing with Hollyoaks is that it's always got an interesting story going on and the pace of storylines is just right (Not too long not over too quickly) and we aren't often left with wasteland periods where nothing much happens (like what's happening with Eastenders). If it got more recognition I reckon it'd be considered one of the best soaps.

Surprised Hollyoaks won nothing but its been a weak year compared to recent years for the soap
Also surprised Corrie got so many, from what I have read and seen its been one of the weakest soaps.

Emmerdale was the weakest soap in 2008, thanks to the crap producer who was in charge, thankfully she *ahem* 'quit' and the whole production team was given an overhaul

Yeah but most of the awards are chosen by a pannelist, and they got the most last year.

It's a travesty that they won nothing, last year was a great year for them.
