American film director Jules Dassin has died in an Athens hospital after a short illness, at the age of 96.

Blacklisted in Hollywood after WWII, he went to Europe where he married the late Greek actress and later culture minister Melina Mercouri.

She starred in Mr Dassin's most famous film, Never on Sunday.

After her death in 1994, Mr Dassin fought to realise her main goal: the return of the Parthenon, or Elgin, marbles from Britain to Greece.

A spokesman for Hygeia hospital in Athens said Mr Dassin had been admitted for treatment two weeks ago.

"Greece grieves the loss of a rare human being, an important creator and a true friend," Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said in a statement.

Well if you ask the older members and look at the older posts, you will find I was a prophet of doom, we later became Lifestyle change presentation consultants.

Prophets of doom work next to Grimmy's office, (Sorry that's Grim Reaper, he is only Grimmy to his friends) so we occasionally get a heads up.

either that or I go to the BBC News site (http://news.bbc.co.uk)

Al-Qaeda Chief Dead, Officials Say

Al-Qaeda’s chief operational planner, Abu Obaidah al Masri, died due to an infectious disease in Pakistan, anti –terrorism officials said Wednesday. Al-Masri, suspected of orchestrating al-Qaeda plots including the London transportation bombings of 2005, is believed to have died of hepatitis C, the Los Angeles Times reports.

It appears that Abu Obaidah al Masri was a powerful chief of the terrorist network’s external operations, who trained recruits in hideouts in western Pakistan and sent them to carry out assaults against the West, according to the investigators. The strategist al-Masri was also responsible for attacks on U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

A U.S. official explained that the anti-terrorism investigators currently traced conversations among al-Qaeda activist, unveiling that al-Masri died of hepatitis C. He is believed to have died in Pakistan’s lawless tribal area bordering Afghanistan.

The Egyptian al-Qaeda boss was suspected in a plot to blow up commercial airplanes over the Atlantic Ocean in 2006, the Associated Press reports. British authorities arrested 24 suspects in August 2006, after almost a year of investigation. The terrorists masterminded to smuggle bombs and detonators disguised as electronic devices and drinks onto the airlines. The plot caused Britain and the U.S. to adopt tougher security measures for passengers. While the British banned for a time nearly all carry-ons, the U.S. limited the amount of liquids that could be brought on board.

The London transportation bombings on July 2005 occurred during the morning rush hour. Three bombs exploded simultaneously on the London Underground and the fourth one exploded an hour later on a bus. 52 people were killed and 700 wounded due to the attack. Four suicide bombers also died.

Believed to be in his mid-40s, Al-Masri lived in Germany in the 1980s before going to Afghanistan to fight the Soviet Army. He was also a veteran of wars in Bosnia and Chechnya, and emerged as one of the senior al-Qaeda operatives after the death of Abu Hamza Rabia, killed by a missile strike in Pakistan in 2005, according to Pakistani authorities. Al-Masri was also suspected of involvement in the November 1995 suicide bombing of the Egyptian Embassy in Islamabad. 17 people were killed in the attack.

Al-Masri appears as being one of the most mysterious members of the terrorist network’s inner circle, as U.S., European and Pakistani officials claim they do not know his real name. “Abu Obaidah al-Masri” is a nom de guerre, translated “father of Obaidah, the Egyptian,” the Washington Post reports.

The body of a man, believed to be missing TV presenter Mark Speight, has been found in a remote area of London's Paddington station, police have said.

Officers are treating the death as "unexplained" but have confirmed that the man had not been hit by a train.

Mr Speight, 42, disappeared last Monday, three months after the death of his fiancee, Natasha Collins, in the bath of the flat they shared in London.

Miss Collins' mother was devastated at the latest news, her spokeswoman said.

She asked for Carmen Collins to be given time to grieve in peace.

The BBC released a statement saying: "This is very sad news and our thoughts and sympathies are with Mark's family and friends.

"Mark was a hugely talented and very popular presenter for many years."

The body of the man was found at about 1000 BST at the station.

Mr Speight's relatives have been informed of the discovery, police said, but a formal identification has yet to take place.

Video footage from CCTV cameras at the station is to be studied by officers as part of their investigation.

The presenter, who was the host of BBC children's show SMart until February, was reported missing last Monday when he failed to meet Miss Collins' mother as arranged.

He was recorded on a security camera entering Queen's Park underground station in north-west London.

Then, 22 minutes later, he boarded a train on the Bakerloo Line, which serves Paddington.

Relatives had made a number of appeals over the past few days, with his father, Oliver, urging him to get in touch and not to "give up" during his time of grief.

The families of both Mr Speight and Miss Collins had issued a joint statement, expressing their "deep concern" and saying he had been in "a fragile state of mind" when he vanished.

A friend had also described how Mr Speight, originally from Wolverhampton, had been planning a concert as a tribute to his late fiancee, which would have raised money for one of her chosen charities.

Mr Speight, originally from Wolverhampton, had been arrested on suspicion of murder and supplying Class A drugs following the discovery of Miss Collins' body at their St John's Wood flat on 3 January.

No charges were brought, however.

She suffered burns on 60% of her body from boiling water and had suffered a drugs overdose after taking cocaine, sleeping pills and alcohol.

A coroner recorded a verdict of death by misadventure at an inquest earlier this month.

Speaking on behalf of Mr Speight's agent, Billy Marsh Associates, Jan Kennedy said the discovery of the body at Paddington had left the company "absolutely devastated".

"Caring and compassionate in everything he did, Mark was truly gifted in life and we are proud to have represented him as a friend and client for almost 20 years," she added.

"He was blessed with a remarkable personality, great artistic talents and the wonderful warm ability to communicate those skills with people, especially children of all ages.

"With his sensitivity of spirit, coupled with his dynamic presence and natural enthusiasm, he was loved and respected by his adoring family, friends and colleagues everywhere in the media," Ms Kennedy said.

He did an interview with the Daily Mail before he disappeared. It was published yesterday on their website. It quite sad to read in places now we know what has happened to him.

'I loved her. Will I ever get through this?'...my last troubling talk with Mark Speight – just before he vanishedI was just leaving the hotel in Blackfriars when I heard someone calling my name.

I turned round and spotted Mark Speight, standing in the shadows and smoking a cigarette. As I walked back to meet him, he said: "Sorry, can I ask you something?"

"Yes anything", I replied.

"Will I ever get through this?" he asked, his bright-blue eyes dull and full of despair.

It was an unusual question to ask a journalist he barely knew but then for Mark nothing is 'normal' any more.

Ever since he found his fiancee Natasha Collins dead in the bath of their London penthouse after she'd taken "significant" amounts of cocaine, the world had become a confusing, essentially meaningless, place.

Which is why his disappearance last week is of such concern to his family and friends.

Four days after our conversation, Mark failed to arrive for a planned meeting with Natasha's mother Carmen in a Covent Garden coffee shop.

CCTV footage shows him boarding a Bakerloo line underground train at Queen's Park station, North-West London. He hasn't been seen since.

A week ago last Thursday was the first time I had met Mark Speight. I had seen him on television presenting the BBC children's show SMart and, like everyone else, I was impressed.

He seemed much younger than his 42 years with a natural, bouncy enthusiasm for life.

And when we spoke, there were still traces of that person he had once been. He was friendly and polite and would occasionally light up at some memory of Natasha – yet each smile was tinged with an unbearable sadness.

There was no question that Mark had been utterly devastated by Natasha's death back in January.

He had the dishevelled demeanour of an old man but the helplessness of a little boy who didn't know where to turn next.

We met because I was doing an interview for The Mail on Sunday with Carmen. Mark accompanied her to the hotel because, as we revealed last week, he had barely left her side since his fiancee's death.

His agents had advised him not to speak to the Press, yet there was obviously much he wanted to say. Before Carmen and I went to speak in private, the three us had coffee.

It was the day after the inquest at Westminster where a coroner had ruled that Natasha, a 31-year-old actress, had died from cocaine toxicity and immersion in hot water.

As one of only a few journalists to speak to Mark about Natasha's death, I know that there were a number of points he wanted to get across.

On a scrunched-up piece of paper, he had written down some notes for Carmen's interview that he hoped she might say on his behalf.

He wrote that Natasha was his "cheeky monkey – his soulmate and best friend rolled into one".

He said their "motto for life was that you can't argue with a smile" and that "she loved people and loved life".

"I loved her for those reasons," he wrote. "We were happy and very much in love."

Most poignantly of all he said: "My life without Tash will never be the same. A part of me has died with her and her loss will be with me for life."

Mark and Natasha met in 1999 when they both appeared in the BBC children's programme, See It, Saw It.

While it was Natasha's first acting job, Mark was already established on the circuit.

The son of art teacher Jacqueline and property developer Oliver Speight, Mark grew up in the well-to-do suburb of Tettenhall near Wolverhampton.

He had his first break when he appeared as a contestant on ITV's Blind Date, hosted by Cilla Black.

By 1992, his talent for comic expressions landed him a role in an advert for crisps. That year he also made his West End debut in the musical Moby Dick and appeared in a video with Kylie Minogue.

He has since starred in programmes for the BBC, CITV and the Discovery Channel.

It probably is him, but you need to remember it hasn't been formally identified so there is still a slim possibility he is OK.

It will be interesting to see how CBBC deal with it. Will they bring SMart back? Will they ever show repeats again?

But the thing is even after this week its still come as a shock.

TV presenter Mark Speight has been found dead at Paddington station, six days after he was reported missing. The 42 year old's body was found in a remote area of the London station this morning. "At 10am we were advised that the body of a male person was discovered at Paddington rail station," says a British Transport Police spokesman. "Officers are investigating the identity and circumstances surrounding the death which is being treated as unexplained." Mark was last seen catching a tube train from Queen's Park station in north west London on Monday afternoon. Later that day, he was supposed to be meeting up with the mother of his late fiancee Natasha Collins, but never arrived. Natasha died in January at the couple's flat after taking cocaine and sleeping pills. Mark was cleared of all involvement in Natasha's death but friends of the Smart presenter say he still blamed himself.

Mark Speight's body is yet to be indenitified so technically, he's still legally considered alive. The media are just assuming that the belief of the officers which is based on grainy CCTV footage, is correct.

According to The Sun website, he was found hanging from the roof and had been there for 6 days, but was too high up for anyone to notice.

A post mortem examination is due to take place later today, after Mark Speight’s parents have formally identified his body. The tragic kids TV presenter was found hanged within the roof of London’s Paddington Station yesterday, but police are currently treating his death as “unexplained” and subject to an ongoing investigation. The post mortem should confirm how he died before an inquest opens. Mark was missing for six days before his body was found by a rail maintenance man, but police believe he died on Monday, as his mobile phone and Oyster travelcard had not been used since then.

This was John Archibald Wheeler, one of the legends of modern physics. He did foundational work on quantum mechanics, collaborating with Niels Bohr on some of the earliest work in nuclear fission. He invented the S-matrix. He played important roles in both the Manhattan project (atomic bomb) and the Matterhorn project (Hydrogen bomb). He made major contributions to general relativity, co-authoring with Charlie Misner and Kip Thorne the bible of the field. He was legendary for his way with words, coining such terms as wormholes, quantum foam, black holes, and the wave function of the Universe (the Wheeler-DeWitt equation). He trained generations of students; one of his first was Richard Feynman.

John Wheeler, the US physicist who coined the term "black hole", has died at the age of 96.

He died at his New Jersey home on 13 April of pneumonia, his daughter said.

Involved in the Manhattan project that developed the world's first atomic bomb, Wheeler was one of Albert Einstein's last collaborators.

Wheeler, who was for many years a professor at Princeton University, also worked with Niels Bohr, the Nobel Prize-winning Danish scientist.

President George W Bush said he was saddened by the death of "one of America's greatest physicists" who had "worked on projects that changed the course of history".

The expression "black hole" became a household term after he used it to describe the phenomenon of a star collapsing into such a dense core that light cannot escape from it.

More On Mark Speight

The inquest into the death of tragic Mark Speight has confirmed that the TV presenter did hang himself – and it’s also emerged that he left two suicide notes. One of the notes was found with the 42-year-old’s body, while the other was left at a residential address. The inquest will be reopened on 20 May as the investigation into his death continues. Police are currently still trying to establish how and why he chose to commit suicide at an office block adjoining Paddington Station.

Prominent Disney animator Ollie Johnston has passed away, aged 95.

Johnston, who was the last of Disney's "nine old men" animation group, died in Sequim, Wash earlier this week. His death was from natural causes.

His film credits included work on Snow White, Fantasia, Alice In Wonderland and Pinocchio.

The Californian's proudest work came on the production of Bambi. Speaking about the film in 1999, he said: "The mother’s death showed how convincing we could be at presenting really strong emotion."

After he retired from animation, Johnston lectured at schools and film festivals around the world. He is survived by his two sons, Ken and Rick.

Roy E. Disney, director emeritus for The Walt Disney Company, paid tribute to Johnston, describing him as a "pioneer".

Disney commented: "Ollie was part of an amazing generation of artists, one of the real pioneers of our art, one of the major participants in the blossoming of animation into the art form we know today."

Edward N. Lorenz, the MIT meteorologist whose efforts to use computers to increase the precision of weather forecasts inadvertently led to the discovery of chaos theory and demonstrated that precise long-range forecasts are impossible, died of cancer Wednesday at his home in Cambridge, Mass. He was 90.

Lorenz was perhaps best known for the title of a 1972 paper, "Predictability: Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wings in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?" The memorable title pithily summarized the essence of chaos theory -- that very small changes in a system can have very large and unexpected consequences.

Although the chaos theory was initially applied to weather forecasting, it subsequently found its way into a wide variety of scientific and nonscientific applications, including the geometry of snowflakes and the predictability of which movies will become blockbusters.

His work "profoundly influenced a wide range of basic sciences and brought about one of the most dramatic changes in mankind's view of nature since Sir Isaac Newton," wrote the committee that awarded him the 1991 Kyoto Prize for basic sciences in the field of earth and planetary sciences.

A spokeswoman for the 35-year-old said it was unclear whether she would go ahead with a UK trip next week to promote film What Happens in Las Vegas.

The British premiere of the movie will take place in London's Leicester Square on Tuesday.

"My dad was loved by so many people and his humour and spirit will always live on in our hearts," the actress said.

In What Happens in Las Vegas, Diaz and Ashton Kutcher play a couple who marry following a night of debauchery.

They also discover one of them has won a huge jackpot having used the other's money.

The movie is to be released in the UK on 9 May.

Diaz is best known for her comic role in There's Something About Mary. She also voiced the character of Princess Fiona in the Shrek films.

Celtic-Legend Tommy Burns (51) Dies After Fight With Cancer
http://goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=696900

Former Scotland and Celtic midfielder Tommy Burns was treated for skin cancer in 2006, but the illness returned earlier this year.

He had been undergoing treatment in both Glasgow and France in recent weeks after having been diagnosed in March.

Tommy Burns played for Celtic from 1974 until 1989, and also had a spell as the Hoops' manager in the mid-1990s. He was working as the club's first-team coach before being granted leave.

A statement from Celtic said: "Tommy, a true Celtic legend and wonderful man will be sadly missed by us all. Clearly, our thoughts are very much with Tommy's wife Rosemary and his family at this extremely difficult time."

Burns was a key member of the Celtic side that won the Scottish Premier Division championship and Scottish Cup in the club's centenary year under the management of Billy McNeill. He earned eight caps for Scotland.

As a player, Burns bade an emotional farewell to Celtic Park on agreeing a £50,000 move to Kilmarnock, becoming manager at Rugby Park four years later.

Having guided Kilmarnock back into the Scottish top flight, he was appointed as manager of Celtic in July 1994, and eventually helped the Bhoys end a six-year trophy drought when they won the Scottish Cup final against Airdrie at Hampden Park.

He left Celtic in 1997 and worked as manager of Reading and assistant manager of Newcastle United before eventually returning to Glasgow with Celtic, where he worked in a variety of roles.

These included youth development as well as first team coaching. Burns also served as a member of the Scotland coaching staff, before his death.

Celtic chairman, John Reid said: "Tommy is someone who was loved by so many of us. He was a man of true integrity and dignity. As a Celtic player, manager and coach, Tommy served Celtic with distinction and true professionalism.

"He was a true gentleman and someone who had the ability to connect and engage with anyone he met.

"As Celtic supporters, we recognised Tommy as one of our own and Tommy in turn was always delighted to spend time in the company of fellow fans.

"It was a privilege to know Tommy Burns. He was a man who gave so much to the club he loved over so many years.

"Tommy's passing will be mourned by the entire Celtic family. He will be hugely missed by us all, but he is someone we will never, ever forget."

Peter Rafferty, Secretary of the Association of Celtic Supporters' Clubs, commented: "Celtic was a big part of his life but the biggest part of his life was his family. He became a grandfather a few weeks ago and that is the biggest tragedy," Rafferty said.

"Legend is a word that is used quite a lot these days but he was. He was a great player with Celtic first and foremost.

"He was a manager who played football the way Celtic supporters like to see it."

Alan McInally, who played alongside Burns as a striker at Celtic, and under him at Kilmarnock, added: ""I have memories of Tommy Burns being just the most happy, family-loving individual I think I've ever met in my life.

"He was always good to me and certainly a character in the dressing room. It would be difficult for any Rangers fan, never mind a Celtic fan, to have anything wrong to say about Tommy Burns."

McInally also hailed the talent Burns displayed as a player, saying: "He was a fantastic football player. He was effective, so effective. I think that's why as a coach and a manager he did so well."

... RIP Tommy.

Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who exposed Stalin's prison system in his novels and spent 20 years in exile, has died near Moscow at the age of 89.

The author of The Gulag Archipelago and One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, who returned to Russia in 1994, died of either a stroke or heart failure.

The Nobel laureate had suffered from high blood pressure in recent years.

After returning to Russia, Solzhenitsyn wrote several polemics on Russian history and identity.

His son Stepan was quoted by one Russian news agency as saying his father died of heart failure, while another agency quoted literary sources as saying he had suffered a stroke.

He died in his home in the Moscow area, where he had lived with his wife Natalya, at 2345 local time (1945 GMT) on Sunday, Stepan told Itar-Tass.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sent his condolences to the writer's family, a Kremlin spokesperson said.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy described him as "one of the greatest consciences of 20th Century Russia".

"His intransigence, his ideals and his long, eventful life make of Solzhenitsyn a storybook figure, heir to Dostoyevsky," he said in a statement.

Prisoner, patient, writer

Solzhenitsyn served as a Soviet artillery officer in World War II and was decorated for his courage but in 1945 was denounced for criticising Stalin in a letter.

He spent the next eight years in the Soviet prison system, or Gulag, before being internally exiled to Kazakhstan, where he was successfully treated for stomach cancer.

Publication in 1962 of the novella Denisovich, an account of a day in a Gulag prisoner's life, made him a celebrity during the post-Stalin political thaw.

However, within a decade, the writer awarded the 1970 Nobel Prize for Literature was out of favour again for his work, and was being harassed by the KGB secret police.

In 1973, the first of the three volumes of Archipelago, a detailed account of the systematic Soviet abuses from 1918 to 1956 in the vast network of its prison and labour camps, was published in the West.

Its publication sparked a furious backlash in the Soviet press, which denounced him as a traitor.

Early in 1974, the Soviet authorities stripped him of his citizenship and expelled him from the country.

Moral voice

He settled in Vermont, in the US, where he completed the other two volumes of Archipelago.

While living there as a recluse, he railed against what he saw as the moral corruption of the West.

Scathing of Boris Yeltsin's brand of democracy, he did not return to Russia immediately upon the collapse of the USSR in 1992, unlike other exiles.

His homecoming in 1994 was a dramatic affair as he travelled in slowly by land from the Russian Far East.

Solzhenitsyn's latter works, which included essays on Russia's future, courted controversy.

In 2000, his last major work Two Hundred Years Together examined the position of Jews in Russian society and their role in the Revolution.

Best-selling author Michael Crichton has died in Los Angeles aged 66 after a "courageous and private battle against cancer", his family has said.

He penned Jurassic Park, as well as books like Congo and Disclosure, all of which were adapted into films.

His books have sold more than 150m copies. He also created the long-running US hospital TV drama ER.

"He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched," his family said in a statement.

A private funeral service is expected.

Crichton is survived by his wife, Sherri, and daughter, Taylor.

The family's statement paid tribute to a "devoted husband, loving father and generous friend".

It added: "Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand."

'Gentle soul'

"Michael's talent out-scaled even his own dinosaurs of Jurassic Park," said filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who directed the blockbuster film version of that novel.

"He was the greatest at blending science with big theatrical concepts, which is what gave credibility to dinosaurs again walking the Earth.

"Michael was a gentle soul who reserved his flamboyant side for his novels. There is no-one in the wings that will ever take his place," he added.

A new Crichton novel had been scheduled to come out in the US next month.

Publisher HarperCollins said the book would now be postponed indefinitely.

A Harvard Medical School graduate, Chicago-born Crichton became the toast of Hollywood when his 1971 novel The Andromeda Strain was turned into a film.

Many of his novels and screenplays were adapted for cinema.

The most successful were Jurassic Park, which burst onto the screen in 1993, and its sequel The Lost World.

ER has won a host of Emmys since it began in 1994, and helped launch the career of George Clooney.

Crichton's 2004 bestseller State of Fear caused controversy when it cast doubt on the dangers of global warming.

Environmentalists said his novel was marring efforts to pass legislation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Magician Ali Bongo, who made numerous appearances on television, has died aged 79 after suffering a stroke.

Bongo - whose real name was William Wallace - also acted as a consultant on programmes including The Paul Daniels Magic Show and Jonathan Creek.

The BBC drama's creator David Renwick once said that Bongo's work had inspired its lead character.

He became president of The Magic Circle in September and had been giving a lecture in Paris when he fell ill.

Bongo's other screen appearances included 1970s children's shows Pauline's Quirkes and The Tomorrow People.

'Great entertainment'

He also fronted Ali Bongo's Cartoon Carnival, which ran for nine episodes on the BBC in 1971.

His ability to devise and demonstrate tricks led to to work with TV magicians including as assistant to David Nixon, and later with Paul Daniels as his chief consultant.

Bongo also worked with actors, teaching them how to replicate illusions on film, including the BBC's 1999 production of Oliver.

Bongo, who was born in India, also produced a number of books in which he illustrated how to perform magic tricks.

The magician said he was against exposing tricks on television, saying it ruined the fun for budding young illusionists.

"It's rather silly. That spoils it for a great many kids. If their tricks are exposed on TV, they can't show them to their friends.

"Magic is a great entertainment if done professionally and with style," he added.
