I didn't hate my parents at that time, but I found them incredibly embarrassing.

I think if anyone claims to hate their parents, 99.9999 times out 100 they don't! Perhaps they don't like them, or don't connect with them, or don't feel they understand, or feel bullied by them - but not hate! The more often we use the word 'hate' - the more we ignore serious issues that validate it's use.
But no, I have never hated my parents, ever. Perhaps it's my upbringing, but I've always appreciated them massively, been polite, abided by their rules, and tried to make them proud. I still don't even swear around them (even "mild" words like bitch) - It's all about respect, and I get it back.

I disagree. In the real world, people may thoroughly dislike their parents, resent their parents, never want to see their parents again. I still don't think they hate their parents.
There are very very few exceptions.

I agree, although I think that the few exceptions that we know of (presumably) ones we learn of through the media; I mean I would completely understand if Elisabeth Fritzl hated her father for what he did to her, whereas I would never truly accept that a friend 'hates' their parents, but my friend's reasons for 'hating' their parents wouldn't be splashed across the media for all to see. I'd say there are probably many people out there who can justifiably hate their parents, but I agree with Lauren's point that most people will only ever resent their parents at most - to truly hate your parents, you would, for example, never get on, never have fun with them or laugh with them and they would probably restrict you severely in many ways - I just don't think that would happen to most people who 'hate' their parents.

If you think thats the real world, you need to look outside of your bubble.
But maybe it is your reality, not the reality of most.
The only people I know who hate their parents are the ones who were abandoned, or abused. If you fall in that cathegory, fair enough, and I do feel for you.

Even those people sometimes still love their parents - even if they resent them. Which is my point exactly - people who hate their parents because they restrict their internet access, or won't let them go to the cinema with friends, or even don't accept their sexuality - can't truly hate their parents in the grand scheme of things.
People often live in a bubble, like you say AMA - where their reality is exaggerated because they experience it themselves, and look beyond nothing else.
