View Full Version : FAO: James. Italicising Swear Words Part 2

Cos the topic was locked before I could say anything.
Swear filter needs seriously updating, cos it's confusing as to whether swearing is allowed.
We can't say ****, but we can say "**** ? One tiny piece of punctuation means the swear word is visible, so it sounds like swearing isn't that much of a big deal - hence why people are finding ways around it.
Lock this now if you want, but I couldn't reply to the other thread and I feel it's a fair point.
the swear filter is very simple to break, is an upgrade possible, the language just isnt called for sometimes

The swear filter needs to be improved!
I remember on my forum I spent ages writing
"****"
"********"
"****"
"****tard"
"****ing"
"mother****er"
"mother****ing"
it got dull :P

Or lose the swearfilter altogether. No filter, no novelty.
I can say ass but not arse. This I find amusing.
I think the mods should be more concerned about solving the mysteries of the vanishing posts. Not deleting curses on a forum where most of the members are aged 15 and over. This is the only forum I am on where swearing is censored. It's like Disneyland.
Can I ask why you should even care that a minority of your members curse? Their are far more members who struggle to even speak basic English.

How about people don't swear and then we don't need a swear word filter!
It's a hard upgrade that's for sure. There's a lot of ways to add certain characters around a particular swear word, and then we'd have to implement it for each word, not just as a standard rule.
People will always find ways to abuse a swear filter, and I don't like issuing warnings so much during BB. The odd swear word isnt going to get you a warning, and sometimes skims under the radar, but if we notice the same person doing it then it becomes an issue, and might have to issue warnings if it gets too much, or is aimed at another member.
I can think of 3 members who I see italicising the swear filter a lot lately, and they are pushing it

Preferably, this. I just know admin won't scrap it though, so they might as well not punish us for beating a beatable thing.

can we at least have it so the first and last letters are kept? so people can tell what youre trying to say without being that offended?
I remember when I first came on here I thought people were doing it themselves haha

But people do, telling them not to is like thought-police.
And when the swear filter gets beaten by accident (sometimes I quote something so put "'s around it, then it becomes visible) - it comes across as it not being too important.
Also Mark, I understand that blocking each individual character around swear words is hard to implement, but when it's so easy to beat people see it as a pointless addition anyway.

Feel I should post in this thread but can't really think of anything to add that hasn't already been said. :)
There's a million ways round swear word filters but removing them might give the impression that we allowed a free for all on swearing. And I think it would lower the tone of the forum a bit, and wouldn't be the image we wished to project, if everyone was cursing left, right and centre.
The thing is though, I genuinly think theirs not a lot of people that do curse on a regular basis. From what I understand based on members opinions, not allowing swear words sends out an even worse, more restrictive tone.

I just think that cos they're so easy to get around (sometimes accidentally) - it projects that image anyway. I know it's illogical to block every single swear word + punctuation combination - which is why I think it should be scrapped anyway, cos people are getting into trouble for beating the filter when sometimes it happens accidentally anyway.
Btw sorry about putting you in the title, haha. It's just cos I got in too late in the other thread you locked.

Exactly. At least swearing consists or real, honest to god words. We should have a forum poll on it or something, but that will never happen.

Why do people feel the need to swear on the forum? It's entirely possible to convey your point without swearing; why are people trying to get rid of the swearing filter? It'd be annoying if you were trying to say something like "assassinate" and 'ass' was blocked, therefore you've got ******inate and it makes no sense to anyone else, but the filter's there to just block outright swearing. What advantage is there to swearing? The forum's meant for 13 year olds and up, not all people of the minimum age are going to know what swear words are or which words count as swear words, and to gain that kind of knowledge over an Internet forum isn't the best way to learn.

Why do people feel the need to swear on a forum? Because they swear in real life quiet a bit, and it pours out into keyboard speak naturaly as a result. By the same token, why do people feel the need to complain about it?
If people thirteen years and up cant handle a bit of swearing, they dont belong on the internet full stop. Why dont we ever cater for the majority on this forum and not censor everyone in the emergency event that a five year old gains access to the forum and asks his mommy what various curse words mean?

Yeah but that's my point; why do people feel the need to cheat the system? I swear in real life too, but I rarely use swear words on TiBB, and when I do I tend to forget that the filter is there; it doesn't bother me that the word is filtered out, people still get the point that I've sworn.

Yeah but I've trained myself to just not use swear words when I post on here, it's like (oh dear) when people use the word "like" as filler when they're speaking; they don't use it as much/at all when they're posting on the Internet because it adds nothing to conversation. Some thirteen year olds aren't going to be up to speed on swearing when they join an Internet forum, when you hear words in real life and you don't know what they mean, you'll ask the person who used it to explain what it means. A thirteen year old who doesn't know what swearing is (without sounding patronising; this is just a hypothetical thirteen year old) is going to face ridicule if they ask what certain words are over the Internet.

No it's not cheating the system, it happens automatically unless the word is by itself. Sometimes i'll be typing a sentence and it'll just so happen that the swear word has punctuation by it, like if I say ****-wit or something. I've seen it happen loads of times by accident, and if I've seen it, then 13 year olds have seen it.
Tbh, they're on an internet forum, they've seen worse things, and they've seen swearing before.
If there is to be a swear word filter, then surely its to avoid people seeing swear words - and it doesn't? So what's the point in it.
I think you are really pushing your argument into the realm of hillarity with this hypothetical thirteen year old, to be honest. And even if they dont know swearing, their is always google...
...besides which, why do some of us have to suffer because one hypothetical thirteen year old who is probably never going to realisticaly exist on this forum question a swear word?
The last thing this forum needs is more would be mods playing mother goose. And like Lauren said, words show up anyway. And like I said, the made up speech on this forum is far more annoying than any curse word my brain could muster.
Argue all you want, but I am not quiet sure what you are trying to protect people from. Theirs no point even debating it, because nobody is getting offended. Only incredibly bored people who are going to pretend to be outraged and fight for justice. And if a thirteen year old DOES decide to sue the forum, I will eat my hat.

"****"...heheh love it!
And I don't really understand what you're trying to achieve by wanting rid of the swearing filter. It's there to filter swear words; clearly it is, in the eyes of the admins, a negative thing to have swear words showing up on the forum. It's not necessary to use swear words when you're posting, you can find alternative words in place of swear words, and in any case, people have found ways around the system, which by the looks of things will just end up in an unnecessary ban if persisted with. Lauren, people who are using the italics tags to use swear words are cheating the system, the thing you described isn't, because it's unintentional, but the use of italics is cheating the filter, and in my view it's unnecessary.

I know, but my point is - the accidental filter cheat happens all the time, I sometimes do it by accident and have to edit my posts and things, but I still see it around. If I have, then 13 year olds have too.
The whole point of the swear word filter is to filter swear words, and it doesn't?

Yeah, but I'm more concerned that people are trying to get rid of the filter, not improve the success of it.

Admins have said they can't improve the success of it (It would require them entering in every possible combination manually I think) - so I think it's pointless as it stands, cos it doesn't do it's job.

It's not pointless, it does filter out swear words on their own, but people are going around the system specifically so they can swear, and until somebody can give me an example of why they would validly need to swear, I can't really accept the view that we should just get rid of the swearing filter. It's maybe not possible to block out all swear words, but we, as users, should respect this one rule and just keep the swearing to a minimum. It's not hard to avoid swearing, I find it offensive when people are going out of their way to go round the filter to swear - maybe that makes me boring or whatever, but I don't see the point in it.
The F word would be easiest to block combinations of; anything that goes -f... or f...- (e.g. mindf... or f...wit) would be a universal thing; I don't think there are any words that contain those four letters in that combination bar the swear word?

What are my trying to achieve? I would like to see a system that can be cheated removed. To be honest, I dont really care either way. My main argument is why people should care anyway. And so far the only argument you have given me is this riddiculous hypothetical thirteen year old. Seems like you are trying to care for the sake of caring.

I agree with the point you made that people swear in real life conversations and it would be a case of "holier than thou" if someone tried to lecture you on that; but people also use the word "like" in real life conversations. Neither of them serve any purpose in conveying your point in a conversation, e.g. "And I said that you're like such a f'ing moron"; remove 'like' and 'f'ing' and it still has the same meaning. I care because it irritates me when people are swearing for the sake of swearing, maybe that's just because of the way I've been brought up, but it just looks really cheeky when you're (not you specifically) using italics or speech marks just to use a swear word.

Their is a big difference. 'Like' fits in with tone of voice, rate of speech, and dialect. All of which are pronounced in every day life. But not on the internet. Curse words on the other hand are full, bona-fide words. Sure, your right, it is not a nessecity to use them, but by the same token, is it a nessecity for you to care? Just let people use them if they want to. You cant really bring up the whole 'it's pointless' argument when you yourself are spending precious minuets of your day trying to vent against people using words.

Is it necessary for anyone to care about anything? No; but I do care, and if I was the only one who did, the filter wouldn't exist in the first place. I'm on exam leave with no exams left, I can afford to spend all day arguing this point . As I said, I'm just unable to accept that being able to freely swear on the forum has any benefit until somebody can present to me an example of where using a swear word is necessary.
