Big Brother - Interview With Sharon Powers And Angela Jain
May 23, 2005, 11:12:35
Executive Producer, SHARON POWERS and Commissioning Editor, ANGELA JAIN talk about what viewers can expect this year.
This interview can be reproduced free of charge within any Big Brother 6 features.
The open auditions…..
S.P - The auditions went amazingly well. We were thrilled with the huge turn out, which hopefully signals that the interest in Big Brother is as strong as ever.
A.J - You never know what you are looking for because it’s as much about the individuals as it is the mix of housemates. There is no science to finding the right housemates, but instinctively when someone good comes along it’s easy to see why they should be in the house.
S.P - Generally the best people at auditions stand out, not because they’ve turned up in outrageous outfits, but because they had something to say for themselves. However, we saw some outrageous sights along the way including a Scotsman wearing nothing but a ginger wig and a kilt and lots of girls leaving very little to the imagination. Big Brother series six…..
S.P - It is the sixth series so more than ever Big Brother has to stay one step ahead of the housemates and the viewers. There will be lots of new surprises in store and the house has been totally redesigned so that this series will feel distinctive from the off.
A.J - As always casting is key to Big Brother because each new housemate brings their own unique element of fun and entertainment to the show and that’s why every series is different from the one before. The new house…..
S.P - The house has been totally redesigned, but it’s still as small as BB5 even though the feel of it will be completely different. We want it to look aspirational and sumptuous to the viewers, but for the housemates it will soon prove to be uncomfortable and claustrophobic.
A.J - To viewers the house will look like the kind of place you’d love to live in, but to the housemates the things they initially liked about it will become the things they find the most oppressive. The house will feel very different to any previous house and more than ever this year there really is nowhere to hide.
The new housemates…..
S.P - There is no ‘identikit’ housemate that we set out to find. When someone has that something extra, whatever that might be, they genuinely stand out from the thousands of applicants. The audition process comprises of many stages over a few months, which allows us to get to know potential housemates as much as we possibly can. Ultimately we try to choose people who have what it takes to entertain the public all summer.
A.J - It’s a very rigorous process getting through the Big Brother auditions and they are just a small indication of the pressure the housemates will be under when they walk into the Big Brother house. Romance……
S.P - It’s always wonderful to watch a Big Brother romance unfold, but as Cilla Black knows it’s not something that you can necessarily engineer or guarantee. Romance is organic and comes from the housemates rather than Big Brother.
A.J - In such a pressured environment it amazes me that any romance can blossom. So it’s always a surprise when, as in previous series, romances do blossom. We can never predict it. The weekly tasks…..
S.P - The weekly tasks are a key feature of Big Brother and this series will be no different. The housemates will be set tasks to determine their weekly food budget, but Big Brother will also throw lots of other challenges at them along the way that will impact on life in the house.
A.J - Ultimately tasks are designed to put the housemates in situations where they reveal a little bit more about their true characters, so that viewers can get to know them better and better. Planning ahead…..
S.P - Even though there’s been months of advanced preparation with regards to ideas, tasks and twists, one of the wonderful things about Big Brother is its unpredictability. With all the preparation in the world it is key that we allow ourselves room to respond to storylines and events as they unfold.
A.J - Until the housemates go in we never really know what will happen. Of course we have thought long and hard about what we would like to happen in the house, but as situations and stories unfold the challenge for us is the ability to change things at a moment’s notice. Favourite on-screen moments…..
S.P - It was a wonderful moment when Nadia won BB5 because it showed how the nation had supported her and embraced her emotional journey. Personally one of my favourite moments from last year was when Ahmed staged a military coup and told Big Brother he was “not a sandwich”. Others that spring to mind are Alex and Jonny having a row over people weeing in the shower in BB3 and of course Jade asking “am I a minger?”
A.J - From BB3 – Alex behind the bathroom door with “That’s the way I like it” playing out. Also Alison and Kate jumping up and down on the garden table and Alison then breaking it and collapsing to the floor. From last year, Nadia showering with her heels on, and in the very first week with Kitten challenging Big Brother and Big Brother showing no mercy by displaying the prize money going down which prompted the housemates to tell her to “get out”. And behind the scenes….
S.P - There was a great moment on the launch night last year. We [the production team] were watching in the gallery and had seen Marco’s excitement at being first in the house and squealing because there was a toaster, followed by Kitten’s infamous entrance. What we all knew was that Jason was waiting in a limo, yet to arrive dressed in nothing but a leopard-skin thong. The beauty of Big Brother….
S.P - The thing I’m looking forward to the most now is seeing how the individuals we’ve spent months choosing interact together as a group. Despite the intense audition process no one can really predict how they will get on living together.
A.J - Like anybody I have my favourite housemates, but as the series unfolds your opinions naturally change. The excitement is finding a reason to love the housemate you thought you were going to loathe and vice versa. But it’s what the viewers think of them that counts and we never know who the nation will take to.
