How do you add a texture?

How do you add a texture? I have put the texture on top of the picture and made it quite transparent, but it looks a little silly. Is there any other way of doing it?

new layer, put in the texture then anything you want... lighten... screen... bla... change the opacity if it's too stark, make it a different colour etc.
