I think it's cos people complained tbh. When they gave their friends a link to the profile it was often long with loads of numbers, well behind on the scale of FB.

It was definitely something that was needed.

For example, when I got to uni, when I met new people they'd say "add me on facebook", only to find they had a very common name and I never found them again.

Yeah this was far well over due, great move by facebook, but they took their time! Facebook will only gain in popularity by doing this, it will be so much easier to keep in contact with people i meet from nights out now.
