Atheist, I think I'd be very easily swayed if I saw something really conclusive that proved the existence of God, I wouldn't go into denial or whatever, but as I've not been presented with any decent argument that has convinced me to date, I'm still an atheist. I wouldn't say I'm agnostic because I'm not really open to the concept of believing in God, but I think if I was given conclusive proof I would become a theist, if that makes sense?

You're agnostic then. Atheism is just believing this is it and we/science control everything.

I'm agnostic as well ...... there has to be more but the bible is a load of bullcrap

Hmm than I thought very many people are atheists then. Karma happens, fate is real,it's not all us. I don't say very many people believe in nothing but ourselves.

Neither.

I am not atheist, because I do not accept the concept of "God".
I am not agnostic, for the same reason.

I guess my views don't have a label, because they're customised to my own beliefs?

I'm agnostic and don't have a concept of God. To be agnostic you just have to believe there is more to the world than science can eventually prove, whether its ghosts, karma, life after death whatever.

Most people think they're atheists when they're really not (I thought the same at one point)

Atheism isn't just not believing in God

No, agnosticism refers directly to a deity, which in turn refers directly to a sole "controller". Since I do not give way to that concept, I'm not qualified under the term 'agnostic'.
If anything, I'm "agnostic atheist", but I don't even strictly come under that.

Btw, you're also wrong about "To be agnostic you just have to believe there is more to the world than science can eventually prove" - because there is the agnosticism branch that understands that objectively these things don't exist.

You're kind of wrong Lauren (I've always wanted to say that, well without the kind of )

The basics to agnosticism is, to quote a definition, "the doctrine that certainty about first principles or absolute truth is unattainable and that only perceptual phenomena are objects of exact knowledge". A god obviously plays a big part in it but it isn't necessary because agnosticism is concerned with knowledge rather than beliefs. A lot of other definitions use the subject of knowing whether or not a god exists, whilst many don't. If it was a crucial point it would be in all definitions and in some definitions is only used for effect to demonstrate the type of knowledge we can never gain.

In essence, agnostics don't care either way and think there could be something else, but there also might not be. We'll never find out anyway (well not in this life, assuming there is an afterlife) so its pointless arguing over it.

Lauren
24-06-2009, 09:38 PM
Tom, without meaning to sound patronising, there are different types of agnosticism. All of them surrounding a concept of a deity, or the knowledge thereof of a deity. Both including the term "deity", even if the latter is simply the knowledge of.

You were right when you said that was the "basics" to agnosticism.

Edit: Wait a second, we're both arguing the same point? LMAO. I think that means you misunderstood my initial point of not being labelled agnostic.

I'll try and say it basic cos my mind goes ahead of me at times.

If we take the definition of agnostic as being "An agnostic believes that the nature of God and/or supernatural are unknown and unknowable by human beings, if they exist at all" - which we've both agreed with. Then the reason I do not fall under that, is because in order to have knowledge (and lack thereof), you have to accept the concept of it.

I am atheist, a large atheist. I don't believe in god and never will, I believe that just because we can't prove something doesn't mean there is a magic man in the sky, it took us thousand of years to learn what we know, these things take time.

Exactly what Fom said, Athiest, always will be.

I, in no way, believe that a magic man in the sky created everything, everything evolved over millions of years.

I was brought up this way, dads parents brought him up going to church every Sunday, and he hated it... he rebelled at 16 ish and never went near church again! xD

I don't force it on anyone, I do think people are stupid for being religious but I don't force it on anyone. I just think life is too short to follow rules like the bible and things say, live life the way you want too, have morals obviously but come on, you only live once!

They say that because religious people can sometimes be a bit pushy, if for no other reason than their holy book tells them to recruit members to their church. I haven't seen many atheists do that, frankly.

I "let" everyone have their own beliefs, although there is nothing to let. Individualism for the win! :joker:

"mimicking aristas point of view", me? PMSL LTSOP #3 and 4 again. Far from it as Arista is on the other side of the tennis net from yourself. Both of you are stating opinions you hold as utter fact yet neither of you can provide proof other than "it is because I say it is"

As for the attempt to put me on the back foot, by stating I am seeking status, I cant think of anything I want more than to be a "King of the Hill" on this forum, it would so make my humdrum life seem worth it, (thats dripping in sarcasm by the way). Though obviously a counter accusation of hypocrisy would be more than accurate, a point which obviously went right over your head.

I dont think looking at who is right is helpful, its the wrong way to view them. The core aspect of all religions is love and respect for your fellow man and woman. that is good as man has evil in his core if the love is not nurtured.
