Arsenal Football Club (often simply known as Arsenal or The Arsenal, or by their nickname The Gunners) are an English professional football club based in Holloway, North London. They play in the Premier League and are one of the most successful clubs in English football, having won thirteen First Division and Premier League titles and ten FA Cups. They hold the record for the longest uninterrupted period in the English top flight and are the only Premier League side to have completed a season unbeaten.

Arsenal were founded in 1886 and were the first Southern club to join the Football League, in 1893. They won their first major trophies in the 1930s, with five League Championship titles and two FA Cups. After a lean period in the post-war years they became the second club of the 20th century to win the League and FA Cup Double in 1970–71, and during the past twenty years have recorded a series of successes – in this time Arsenal have won a Cup Double, two further League and FA Cup Doubles, and became the first London club to reach the UEFA Champions League Final.

The club's colours have traditionally been red and white, which have evolved through history. Similarly, the club have changed location over time; the team were initially founded in Woolwich, south-east London, and in 1913 they moved north across the city to Arsenal Stadium, Highbury. In 2006 they made a less drastic move to their current home, the Emirates Stadium in nearby Holloway.

Arsenal have a large fanbase, who hold a string of long-standing rivalries with several other clubs; the most notable of these is with neighbours Tottenham Hotspur, with whom they regularly contest the North London derby. Arsenal are one of the richest clubs in English football (valued at over £600m as of 2008), and thanks to their stature, have regularly featured in portrayals of football in British culture. Arsenal Ladies are the most successful English club in women's football and are also affiliated with the club.

Some Statistics.

- David O'Leary holds the record for Arsenal appearances, having played 722 first-team matches between 1975 and 1993. Fellow centre half and former captain Tony Adams comes second, having played 669 times. The record for a goalkeeper is held by David Seaman, with 563 appearances.

- Thierry Henry is the club's top goalscorer with 226 goals in all competitions between 1999 and 2007 having surpassed Ian Wright's total of 185 in October 2005. Wright's record had stood since September 1997, a feat which overtook the longstanding total of 178 goals set by winger Cliff Bastin in 1939. Henry also holds the club record for goals scored in the League – 174 – a record that had been held by Bastin until February 2006.

- Arsenal's record home attendance is 73,707, for a UEFA Champions League match against RC Lens on 25 November 1998 at Wembley Stadium, where Arsenal formerly played home European matches because of the limits on Highbury's capacity. The record attendance for an Arsenal match at Highbury is 73,295, for a 0–0 draw against Sunderland on 9 March 1935, while that at Emirates Stadium is 60,161, for a 2–2 draw with Manchester United on 3 November 2007.

- Arsenal have also set records in English football, most notably the most consecutive seasons spent in the top flight (82 as of 2008–09) and the longest run of unbeaten League matches (49 between May 2003 and October 2004). This included all 38 matches of their title-winning 2003–04 season, making Arsenal only the second club ever to finish a top-flight campaign unbeaten, after Preston North End (who played only 22 matches) in 1888–89.

- Arsenal also set a UEFA Champions League record during the 2005–06 season by going ten matches without conceding a goal, beating the previous best of seven set by A.C. Milan. They went a record total stretch of 995 minutes without letting an opponent score; the streak finally ended in the final against FC Barcelona, when Samuel Eto'o scored Barcelona's equaliser in the 76th minute.

My favourite game of the season. Arsenal vs Liverpool

We had no

No Almunia.
No Gallas.
No Clichy.
No Van Persie.
No Adebayor.

And Arshavin ripped the game apart.

Watching Liverpools defence completely turn to mush, goal keeper never made a save from Arshavin.

Favourite game on just spectacular football was our 2 - 1 win of man utd where nasri won it for us.
Both teams played amazing football that day, but on the day we were better.

Arsenal Set To Make £40m Franck Ribery Bid - Reports
The Gunners are said to be preparing a club record bid for the Frenchman...
28 Jun 2009 14:26:57
Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery in action for his side

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is ready to change his transfer policy and make an astonishing £40 million bid for Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery, according to Daily Star Sunday.

The Gunners boss has become known in the Premier League as a manager who does not spend big on players, preferring to buy young prospects for the future and develop them at the club.

However, he has already signed Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax for a fee reported to be worth up to £10 million, and it is now thought he will turn his attentions to other areas of the pitch.

The British tabloid has reported that the Frenchman believes he could pull off the transfer deal of the summer by signing the France international.

The former Marseille man has been impressing in his two years at the Allianz Arena, and has been repeatedly linked with moves away from Bavaria in recent months.

Several major European clubs have stated that they are interested in signing him, and the Frenchman may be tempted with a move to the Premier League or Spain's Primera Division.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea have all at some point registered their interest in the winger, and it is thought a bidding war will take place over the summer.

Madrid are aiming to add Ribery to their new Galactico collection, and are prepared to pay over the odds to convince the 26-year-old to move to Santiago Bernabeu.

Wenger has been criticised recently for his transfer policy by present and former players, and it is now thought that he is set to spend big this summer.

Goal.com is one of the best for rumours like reliable.

Thats crazy, guess we have a bit of money at the minute.

Arsenal enter race to sign £30m striker Benzema

Arsenal are reported to be in the race to sign Lyon striker Karim Benzema, as they look to replace Emmanuel Adebayor should he leave for AC Milan this summer.

Karim Benzema: Lyon could do business

The highly-rated Benzema has been linked with Manchester United for the past six months, but the News of the World claim that the striker is now subject of interest from Arsene Wenger.

Should the future of £25m Togo striker Adebayor be decided in the next few weeks, Arsenal will be keen to bolster their strikeforce and a £30m bid for Benzema could be accepted.

The player has said that he would prefer another season at Lyon to make sure he cements a place in the France side for the World Cup. But the club's owners have hinted that a bid of more than £30m would turn their heads and Benzema is also believed to favour a move to the Emirates over Old Trafford.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas' said last week that despite Benzema's apparent desire to stay at Stade Gerland, a sizeable offer could lead to him leaving.

"Karim has said that he wants to stay another year at Lyon," Aulas told L'Equipe. "But I think that Kaka or Ronaldo maybe imagined remaining with their respective clubs.

"There is a tsunami called Real Madrid which provokes reactions at Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United.

"So it is very complicated to say that he is non-transferable. It's obvious we want to keep him. There is more chance he'll be at Lyon next season than that he won't be.

"I won't hide from you the fact that he has been approached. For the moment, I managed to convince them not to go further."

Benzema has come through the ranks at Lyon and burst onto the scene in the 2007-08 season with 31 goals in 51 games, a streak that saw him named Ligue 1 player of the year as well as top the league's scoring charts.

Barcelona's Hleb linked with shock Arsenal return
29.06.09 | tribalfootball.com

Barcelona's unhappy midfielder Alex Hleb is being linked with a sensational return to Arsenal.

Hleb wants out of the Nou Camp.

"I am right in the best years of my career and I do not want to spend those years on bench," he said.

The news Hleb is looking for a move will be also be welcomed by a number of Premier League clubs after his three impressive seasons with Arsenal.

In a bizarre twist, even Gunners boss Arsene Wenger might be interested in taking Hleb back for a lot less than the £11.8m he sold him for, says the Daily Star Sunday.

Everton and Man City are also interested in the Belarusian.

Im overjoyed about the sudden rush with Arsenal, but I never particualarly liked Hleb.

30stone
28-06-2009, 03:36 PM
Hleb was quite a good player well built would be pretty good.

Im happy because last 4 years

we have been struggling with money, but we are completely financially stable club.

So we have a bit to spend, we had 30m apparently for transfers

we spent 11m on thomas, then gallas will probs leave get some alright money for him.

Adebayor goes for 25m benzema comes in for 30 thats only 5m diff

and wil be the biggest signing in arsenal history.

30stone
28-06-2009, 03:39 PM
we will have a very good team and it will have depth.

Gk:
Almunia
Fabianski

Walcott

Strikers
Van persie
Arshavin

Turkey’s teen sensation wants Arsenal move

Fenerbahçe’s 16-year-old wonderkid Mehmet Topçu is attracting interest from a whole host of European clubs, with Premier League giants Arsenal said to be leading the race for his signature.

Capped 22 times for Turkey Under 16’s, the central midfielder’s performance in the national team has reportedly alerted Arsenal along with fellow top flight sides Chelsea, Manchester City and Fulham.

Topçu’s father Mujdat Gurel Selami has already received an invite from one of the above clubs and it’s expected that the Gunners’ will take advantage from being his favoured destination.

Who does everyone think will leave Arsenal this summer.

Im expecting

Adebayor - Possibly Replaced by Benzema.
Eboue - I think a youth player like hoyte will fill his position, under sagna.
Gallas - Replaced by Vermaleen
Bendtnar - Could be loaned out i think.

Vermaleen
Melo and

If Ribery was to come Rosicky and Walcott would have to go, and I would rather keep them both than get Ribery.

Walcott wont go because hes young

Rosicky wont at the moment, i think the bid for ribery is a little pointless id just put in 32 for benzema.

Chelsea will outdo them anyway.

Jayson

Gilberto Silva tells Felipe Melo to sign for 'fantastic' Arsenal

Gilberto Silva has advised his Brazil midfield team-mate Felipe Melo to sign for Arsenal.

Gilberto, who spent six years with the Gunners until leaving for Panathinaikos last summer, believes Melo would be perfect for his former club.

Arsenal have lined up a £15million bid for the fiery Fiorentina star and Gilberto revealed that Melo had asked him questions about what it is like to work with boss Arsene Wenger.

'We heard rumours and he asked me. I said it's a fantastic club and if he's interested he should go without thinking,' Gilberto told the BBC. 'I have told him Arsenal is a great club and I am sure next season they will improve.

'He is exactly what they need: a powerful player with quality. He is a young player, strong, powerful and has a good quality in his pass.'

Gilberto and Melo proved a solid partnership for Brazil in their march to Confederations Cup glory in South Africa. The South Americans beat the USA 3-2 in Sunday's final in Johannesburg.

Melo, 26, has become a regular in Dunga's Brazil side since making his international debut against Italy in February, coincidentally at the Emirates Stadium.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/arsenal/4686673/Martin-Taylor-relieved-at-return-of-Arsenals-Eduardo.html

Martin Taylor relieved at return of Arsenal's Eduardo
Birmingham City’s Martin Taylor has spoken of his relief at Eduardo’s return to fitness, and hopes his own ordeal over the incident is now at an end.

http://i39.tinypic.com/2w5iywg.jpg
Distraught: Martin Taylor walks off the St Andrews pitch after being dismissed for his tackle on Eduardo

Taylor received death threats after his tackle Eduardo in last February’s Premier League game left Eduardo with horrific injuries. He has always maintained that the tackle was not malicious, and says he has received plenty of support over the last year.

“It’s a relief to see him back playing,” said Taylor in the Mail .

“But there is nothing like that first proper game because you are never quite sure whether you have recovered or not. I had a feeling he would be okay because he’d played for Croatia last week. I think it lifted Arsenal on Monday night and I can understand why.

“To recover both mentally and physically — to get through that training and to get back to that standard — he has done really, really well. You have to be exceptional to reach that level in the first place. It is one thing to come back and play at all. It is another to play for Arsenal.”

Speaking about the tackle, for which Taylor was dismissed, the former Blackburn player said: “‘I know in my heart of hearts that it was an accident. A horrible accident. So I wanted to see him playing again. You can never be sure. I was hopeful because of the updates I received from Arsenal. I kept my fingers crossed when he was playing in the reserves.

In the immediate aftermath of that tumultuous 2-2 draw at St Andrews, Arsene Wenger called for Taylor to be banned from football for life, comments he later retracted.

But the immediate aftermath of the incident proved incredibly difficult for Taylor and his family.

“I had death threats,” he said. “No one would sit here and say that was enjoyable. When I received them, I wasn’t too sure with some of them. A couple were written in crayon, some were more sinister. But generally, I didn’t take them too seriously.

“Ninety per cent of the correspondence I had, though, was encouraging. The other 10 per cent wasn’t.”

Asked whether Eduardo would shake Taylor’s hand should the pair meet again, he said: “I wouldn’t expect him to. Maybe, I don’t know. It’s up to him.”

This is my first post on this Gooners page, and only just 2 weeks old on the BB forum. I have been living abroad for the last 5 years and only returned in March, so I've missed BB5,6,7,8 and 9.
I used to go to Highbury all the time before I left England, and since I've been back I managed to get to the Emirates a few times. I found it to be a terrific stadium, but I do miss Highbury.
I hope this coming season we can make that extra push for honours. Maybe I can bring the good luck back now that I've returned to England. My last season before I left was the Invincible season, so some more of that wouldn't come amiss.

Anyway thanks for inviting me on.

Manchester United and Arsenal face fight to sign Costa

Manchester United and Arsenal face a tough battle to secure the signature of teenage sensation Douglas Costa after Bayern Munich were reported to have made a move to sign him. Costa, just 18, is regarded as one of the best young talents in the world and has already been described as the new 'Ronaldinho'.Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to replace Cristiano Ronaldo and Costa's agent Cesar Bottega recently said he was on United's shortlist.

Arsene Wenger is also keeping tabs on the Gremio youngster, but both managers will have to make their move quickly if they want to secure his signature.

Costa has also been targeted by a big German club, believed to be Bayern Munich and could make a lucrative move in the next few days.

Bottega said: "There was an approach from a big German club. They saw him at the South American Youth Championship and liked the player.

"There have been talks and we will see what happens in the next week."

Manchester United are believed to have wanted Costa on a trial period, but that move was turned down by Gremio president Duda Kroeff.

Bottega added: "I received a phone call from someone working for Manchester United, he asked for Douglas to be released [for a trial period] and said that he would not play, but that they wanted to see him in action. I said to them that this will not happen.

"Douglas is not at a stage where he would go through such a situation. He is an established player, he is not a stranger. He has no need to face tests at European clubs."

The Brazil Under-20 international has a minimum release clause of £21m and it remains doubtful whether Ferguson or Wenger would pay so much money for such a young player.

21m? We wont buy him, could buy melo for that!

Arsenal, Villa, Bolton & Man City all set to hold talks with £12 million Portuguese midfielder
Posted by Cathal Breathnach on Monday, June 29, 2009 at 9:02 PM

It has been claimed today that Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bolton and Manchester City will all hold talks with Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso.

The Portuguese international has been linked with a move to the Premier League for quite some time now, however for whatever reasons he remains a Sporting player, but that may be about to change.

Veloso, 23, is desperate to join an English club during the summer transfer window and with four clubs now vying for his signature, a move looks a strong possibility. Whoever does eventually sign Veloso will have to cough up at least £12 million and in my opinion, at that price, he would prove great value for money.

He is still quite young, he can play in a variety of different positions and he has Champions League experience. Personally, I think Martin O'Neill should do all he can to convince Veloso to go to Villa Park cause at the moment, he could really use a quality midfield player. Stay tuned to Football Corner for all the latest developments on this and more over the coming days and weeks.

Veloso is great he would be great if we dont sign melo! Possibly better.

Sky Sports News understands Marouane Chamakh is in London putting the finishing touches to his proposed move to Arsenal.

The Gunners have been tracking the Morocco international frontman for some time, with the player admitting recently that he was heading to Emirates Stadium.

It appears as though Arsene Wenger may finally be about to get his man, with the French coach recently confirming that an agreement was close.

Should he agree terms with Arsenal, Chamakh will move to England as a free agent as his contract at Bordeaux is set to expire.

The 26-year-old has been a regular source of goals in the French top flight over recent years and has often expressed a desire to test himself at a higher level.

He may be about to get that opportunity in the Premier League, with it seemingly only a matter of time before he secures a dream move to Arsenal.

Proposal
While the Gunners are delighted to be closing on a top target, Bordeaux have been left disappointed at the prospect of seeing their most potent attacking weapon head for pastures new.

Club president Jean-Louis Triaud has revealed that the Ligue 1 outfit did everything in their power to keep the African ace at Stade Chaban Delmas, but accepts there is nothing more he can do.

"We have proposed extensions to Marouane. Our first proposal was on January 1, 2009," he said.

"He said he never spoke to Arsene Wenger. But I find it strange that he could be recruited by Arsenal without talking to the coach.

"I have had two difficult transfers since I arrived: Wiltord and Chamakh. These two departures relate to Arsenal.

Affection
"Had he accepted our proposal, he could have improved his contract.

"I think he was surrounded and badly misguided. I did not appreciate at all how it went. As president, I resent it."

Triaud, though, has no personal animosity towards Chamakh.

He added: "Personally, I owe him all my affection. He is a lovely boy. He is a warrior and a fighter. He has not cheated.

"I wish him success at Arsenal. I will see him again with pleasure.

"I have great affection and gratitude for him. He brought a lot of things at the club. But I still don't appreciate the way he left."

Cesc Fabregas is understood to have told Arsene Wenger he wants to leave Arsenal in order to rejoin Barcelona as president Joan Laporta hints at making a bid.

Writing in Spanish newspaper AS, Guillem Balague has revealed that Fabregas has flown in to London from Barcelona to discuss his future at Emirates Stadium with Wenger.

Fabregas recently revealed that he does want to play for former club Barca one day and is keen for his future to be resolved before representing Spain at the World Cup finals.

It now appears that the midfielder is ready to ask for permission to join the newly-crowned Primera Liga champions next season and a fee is likely to be in the region of £30-35million.

Meanwhile, Barcelona president Laporta has suggested it may be the right time to bid for the 23-year-old following Fabregas' comments at a promotional event last week.

The Arsenal captain, who was plucked from Barca's youth ranks in 2003, had said, 'I think I would like to go to Barcelona, whether or not they want me is another thing'.

Laporta was surprised by Fabregas' frankness and reckons it is worth considering a move for the influential midfielder.

"It is remarkable that the player has said that," he told the club's official website.

"If the technical secretary [Txiki Begiristain] believes we must make an effort, we will do and will talk to Arsenal."

Villa talks
Laporta also confirmed transfer talks were well underway with Valencia over a deal to bring striker David Villa to Camp Nou.

"We are in the negotiating process and everything is going in the right direction," Laporta added.

"We hope it is resolved soon. Everything is on track and hopefully we can reach an agreement."

Barcelona have confirmed that they have made a formal offer to Arsenal for midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

The Gunners captain, who signed from Barcelona as a 16-year-old in 2003, has made no secret of the fact that he wishes to return to Catalonia this summer.

The Spanish international is keen to get his future resolved before Spain open their World Cup campaign against Switzerland on 16th June.

Barcelona, who have already shelved out £34million for Valencia striker David Villa this summer, have warned that a deal is unlikely to be thrashed out quickly and it remains to be seen whether Arsenal deem their offer to be acceptable.

"Everyone knows that Cesc wants to play for this club and everyone knows that we also want this," Barca director general Joan Oliver told the club's official website.

"But there is a third major player, which is Arsenal.

"Any deal must go through them and June 1 was the beginning of the period of official negotiations.

"Until earlier there were informal conversations, but since yesterday these are formal - and the usual mechanism is to present a formal and concrete offer.

"So yesterday afternoon, we submitted a written bid to Arsenal."

Our new home kit is wonderful

The blue is a nice touch. We've been wearing the same old red and white for so long that we needed something to spice it up a bit this season.

Arsenal have signed Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla from Malaga on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee believed to be below £15m.

The 27-year-old has joined the club at a pre-season training camp in Germany.

Cazorla said: "I'm so excited to be joining one of the greatest teams in Europe and also in the Premier League."

Boss Arsene Wenger, who is also working to sign Real Madrid's Nuri Sahin on loan, added: "He's a great signing who will add significant quality to us."

The Frenchman continued: "He is a player with good experience at both club and international level.

"He is a versatile, attacking midfield player who can play comfortably on either side of the pitch or centrally. He has good pace, is technically gifted and will be a huge asset to Arsenal Football Club. We are delighted that he is joining us."

Cazorla spoke of his intention to help the Gunners end their trophy drought, which dates back to 2005.

"I'm so happy to be joining Arsenal," he stated. "This is a club with great players, a fantastic stadium and huge support.

"The club has one of the best managers in football and their style of play is recognised and admired all over the world.

"I will do my best to help Arsenal challenge for trophies and make all the supporters happy."

Meanwhile the Gunners hope to add Turkey international Sahin to a squad already boosted by the arrivals of Germany forward Lukas Podolski and France striker Olivier Giroud from Montpellier.

Real Madrid signed Sahin from Borussia Dortmund on a six-year contract in May 2011, but the 23-year-old has struggled to establish himself at the Bernabeu and Real boss Jose Mourinho would let him leave on loan.

Doubts remain over the future of captain Robin van Persie, who has said he will not extend his contract when it expires in 2013.

But the Dutch striker is with the squad in Germany ahead of Sunday's friendly against Cologne, which was agreed as part of the Podolski transfer.

The Cazorla and Sahin deals are unrelated to Van Persie, but were accelerated by news that Jack Wilshere will not play before October as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

Cazorla, who joined Malaga from Villarreal last summer, stands at 5ft 6ins and featured for Spain at the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
