View Full Version : Official Press Release: House Spilt (They're doing it this Saturday!!!)
OMG - they are actually going to do it.
------------------------------------
The Big Brother House Divide
On Saturday night (June 8th) the remaining ten housemates will once again be given a task to perform live on Channel 4 (Channel 4, 10pm). But this week, Big Brother has upped the stakes – the 5 task winners will live in luxury whilst the 5 losers will live in poverty as Big Brother splits their home into ‘Rich House / Poor House’.
This week’s live task will be a basketball hoop challenge. The first five housemates to score a basket will be the winners – the others the losers, and it’s up to the housemates to decide the order of shooting. As soon as the task has been completed, the winners will be asked to go to one bedroom with their belongings and the losers the other and remain there until further notice.
When they open the bedroom doors the shocked housemates will be faced with a house divided by glass bars – 5 on one side and 5 on the other. The rich side will have the comfy sofas, the luxurious bedroom, the swimming pool and the swanky kitchen and wet room. They will also have £400 housekeeping allowance and hot water in the morning and evenings. The poor side will have basic furniture, an outside wood burning stove on which to cook and an outside toilet and shower. The poor house will have the chickens for eggs and the vegetable garden with which to supplement the basic provisions (rice, pasta) provided by Big Brother. They will have no housekeeping money and no hot water. The housemates will be divided in this way for at least one week.
Viewers can see the housemates reactions to their new surroundings during Big Brother Live on Channel 4 at 11.30pm.
An updated set of house rules will also be issued to the housemates referring to housemates conduct in the split house.
“When we said Big Brother was getting tougher this is what we meant. Each week how the housemates perform in their task will fundamentally effect the way the live their lives in the house.” Phil Edgar-Jones, Executive Producer.

Almost unbearably cruel for the poor 5 housemates who end up in the Poor House, but it will make for riveting viewing! :hello: :elephant: :hello:
I must admit when I first heard about this ages ago I hated the idea and really hoped that they were not going to do it. However, this years show is sooo boring that anything to make it more interesting will be welcome.

Thanks Lee. That's made my day. ANYTHING to make it more interesting!!!
:hello::hello::hello::hello::hello:
According to Guardian Online the "rich house/poor house" tactic has been tried out in the Dutch version of Big Brother. it says:
-------
'In Holland, mini tasks were set to allow housemates to move between the rich and poor areas. The "poor" side of the house spent much of their time lined up in a row staring through the glass barrier watching their "rich" counterparts drink wine and enjoy themselves.'
-------
I just hope that the 2 cliques don't end up in either house.
Hopefully couples like Kate and Spencer will get separated. Perhaps Jade and Spencer going in one house together might drive Kate mad.

Absolutely, make them suffer, that's what I say. After all, I suffer everytime I look at them and try to like them.
BTW, I am not REALLY logged on from work Lee!
:bawling: I have a bad feeling about this - its gonna be a big mistake :bawling:
Also it might look bad on camera....
Oh well - guess we will have to wait and see.....

Wow, I'm really looking forward to this. I just wish all ten were going into the poor side of the house. It would serve them all right and I'd love to see their faces.
As for £400 housekeeping for just 5 people, if the 5 include Jonny, Spence and PJ they will be absolutely sozzled for the whole week. Hic, hic.
:xyxwave:
I've just realised, I'm away this weekend so I don't think I'm actually going to see this. Typical, the first time something interesting is going to happen and i'm going to miss it.

What kind of people like to watch others suffer ?
Will there be two separate Diary rooms ?
The press release made no such mention of that

SUBJECT House Split - Endemol goes back on its word
During the pre-show speculation, the press mooted the split house rumour. At that time your press spokesperson denied that report.
You are now doing what you said you would not do. Why ?
This is guaranteed to cause more suffering. Do you think we all like to see people suffer ?
Is it right to use suffering as entertainment ?
There have been a number of relationships formed, notably the Kate/Spencer relationship. If one of these pairings is split up in this, is this not likely to cause further stress and axiety ?
If so where is the concept known as “Duty of Care“
From my scanning of the various forums, the feelings from a number of people is that BB3 has been thoroughly mishandled this year, from the House construction, contestant selection, through to the way that the weekly task has been totaly reconfigured.
This split house idea is yet another idea that seems good to a focus group but has not been thought through. (We have not been told how you will deal with the Diary room access.)
This split house proposition should be re-considered, and the views of actual viewers taken into account.

I don't know if I like the idea of the heaven/hell split house.
But I suppose any new thing could only make it more interesting, it couldn't be much worse right now!
That's about what I think as well Janette. As I said earlier I've never really liked the idea of the split house but BB3 has no'spark' of interest this year so at least it is going to give us something different to watch.
I think if I was in the 'Rich' half I'd feel really guilty and wouldn't feel much like living it up at all.

I don't like this idea at all - I don't want to seepeople having to have cold showers and burning on a wooden stove, being driven mad by the cruelty of it all. This isn't entertainment to me, it's treating half the house worse than convicts are treated.
Maybe i'm overreacting, but even if I did get to be on the rich side, as LEE says, I'd feel awful.
Hopefully couples like Kate and Spencer will get separated. Perhaps Jade and Spencer going in one house together might drive Kate mad.
I hope not. At the moment it is really boring, and i watch it to see how relationships are developing, particularily with Kate and Spencer , who i think make a lovely couple.
If they are split up, it will cause even more boredom on my part (and break my ickle heart!)
I know that they are going to be on separate sides now, just to spite me!!
But on a more serious note, i don't think this will work, and I don't know how much i'll enjoy watching it, if at all.
Are they going to do this for the rest of the time in the house?? Please say no!

I think its a good idea - please remember its only a gameshow & they can leave at any time , there is no hardship in the real sense of the word.On the low rated "survivor" show the people endured real hardship, lack of food( they ate rats ) and did extremely difficult tasks.
That was for £1 million of course but the people ended in obscurity - this is for a chance at real fame and they can walk at any time - they don't really "endure" having your feelings hurt is not "suffering".
All in All this BB needs something NOW or there won't be a BB4.

Oh, worry not, they'll be separated, and forced to sitting gazing longingly at each other through glass bars (because I would like to see them get together, and these things tend to go against me, it's just Anna luck!)

Anything is better than the rubbish we are watching at the moment and I agree with pauljw. I hope Alex gets to go in the poor house. God, how we'll see him moan. Perhaps he will wish he had been evicted last night.
What I would like to know is. How can they make bread on a wood stove?
Can't wait to see their smug little faces when they come out of the bedrooms.
Pity it's only for a week it would be good to see them put more effort in to future task's.

I so hope the couples are split up. I don't think there is any real romance here. (Sorry to those who are looking for something deep and meaningful) just pratting about, warmth and comfort and a not inconsiderable amount of posing and plotting.
Thank God something is going to happen in there.
Jbellemeg, it is very possible to make bread on a wood stove. I have done it lot's of times in my sister's croft. It will give them something to do, and they will all whinge, and no doubt think life is cruel.
See, if you are an old witch, so am I!

Here's a conspiracy theory for anyone that's interested.
The producers can influence who ends up where, if they know how good the housemates are at the skill involved.
They could have asked them if they have played, or still play, basketball or netball.
Just a thought.

I first thought it was a good idea but now that I have just seen the seperation I have had a change of mind.
It looks like a prison. The interaction between them will be ruined I think.
Worst of all it is going to go on til the end of the series. Each weekly task will give them a chance to swap places.
To see them talking behind glass bars is really quite awful. I don't like to watch people being made physically uncomfortabe. I think the BB team have gone bonkers to allow this divided house until the end of the 9 weeks. I am not a happy bunny.
:shocked::shocked::shocked:

08-06-2002, 11:42 PM
I agree - I think the split house is cruel. I thought the idea of BB was to get a group of very different people together and see how they would interact, live together, chat and have to rely on each other for 9 weeks. This is like being in prison. I think it's a dreadful idea - even worse now knowing it's going to last until the end of the series.
If this is what the Endemol/Ch4 got from their 'focus groups' they can stick it.
We want to be entertained not have to watch a version of Prisoner Cell Block H.

I agree. To inflict this idea for more than a week is divisive and totally against the spirit of Big Brother. It is not even enharncing the televised experience as it is no longer possible to watch your favourites as the barrier is in the way.
I fear it will break the bond we, the "viewers", are building up with the housemates.
I also fear the ethos is being lost. It may even have the effect of showing up the contrived nature of this years BB3........
Sad for the housemates.......... I feel for them........ And sad for us.
I sincerely hope I'm wrong...........:colour:

First up mods get rid of the smileys and animated things, they do nothing. nothing whatsoever, except put your off what you're trying to post.
Back to the start. Right, I wholeheartedly agree with Graeme on this prison venture. Now that I've been made aware it's going to last the entire nine(?) weeks I'm even more against it. Where as before I would have kicked the bars down and shoved my finger up to the producers no matter what side I was on, now my normally deep deep deeply buried angry burning injustice side has totally risen to the head and now I would be ripping the poles out of the floor and shoving THEM up the arse of the producers sideways. I'm sure this is what graeme really REALLY wanted to say but is too polite to go that far. I'm not and yes in that situation I would.
It's just not good watching people suffer for not doing anything wrong, missing a hoop? come on. Nope personally speaking I'd rather watch people getting it on with each other, having a laugh and bonding together. All we will have in this format as Alex and Sandy being snidey and total gits and possibly "getting away with it".
Still we have to endure Sandy doing laps in the pool, when there's clearly a bit more interesting things going on. Hell I'd prefer to watch the chickens for 40 minutes, I would I really would.
This years production values have for us viewers gone rock bottom. All or rather most of the interesting conversations have been muted, or worse cut out altogether. and why? slander? personal protection? Nope, so they can get a nice big double DVD package out when it's all over cashing in further on their four (?) year old product.
A big big shame. IF this years edition had been ADVERTISED as a remake of "The Experiment" then I could have forgiven the producers, but it WAS NOT, it was sprung on the housemates while they were already in the house after two weeks of getting to know each other. Unless the bars are removed at the end of this week then I will not be viewing the sadistic programme, and I wouldn't be surprised if more people walk out, or even if someone goes totally do lally. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if there's a nasty incident involving sharp knifes and irritating gits. In that situation, if i could not remove the bars, then mass culling would follow and I'm not talking about the chickens either.
I am normally non violent. BUT injustice riles me. Abuse of power riles me and seeing human beings seperated by privilege and status irks me too not so much in "real life" where you earn what you get out of life, but in a "prison" environment where getting extra isn't possible.
Sorry about the long post, but I've followed Graemes directions and posted my thoughts and opinions here. First one. Am very interested in the reply Graeme gets. if any.
Sidrat.
The whizzbang smileys must go!!! More annoying than watching Sandy go round the pool. HONEST!!!!

Hello sidrat and welcome!
Sorry mate, but we love our smilies here! We are simple folk, and they make us happy.
However I agree with you on many things.
This BB is a MAJOR disappointment.
I watch it (when I do) in very small short doses with a grimace on my face, HOPING it will improve.
I am given to understand though that the viewing figures are up on last year. I think the producers are aiming at an almost exclusively young audience and think this appeals better to them.
I suspect figures may have been falling recently and that they have been forced to take this action. In the previous years figures have steadily picked up as we became fonder of housemates and more embroiled in their progress.
I know I do have some singular tastes but I am surprised at how little I still like any of them. If I did like them I might worry more about what is happening to them. I don't like them, and my feeling is that they are in there for what they can get and they are free to walk whenever they like.
The 'experiment' was, as you know, based on the Harvard study. Scary and had to be stopped in both cases for different reasons.
This is unethical, but so have all of them been. They are being played with, and we are actually the real tormentors. We are the crowd in the coliseum giving it the old thumbs up or down.
It's also a bit like early Star Trek episodes when old James T had to fight for his life for the benefit of amusing a few jelly headed aliens.
If we really want them to stop it, we should all turn off.
After you!!!

Welcome to this forum Sidrat
(For the benefit of others Sidrat is another regular of the more turbulent Mid Atlantic, C4 Reach Forum where we first met)
What I have been trying to do with little success is get an E-mail address of O2 the sponsor.
The trouble is their website does not have the e-mail address listed, only some form field to put you comments in, and it seems more geared up as a customer help set up. I did not feel I could express myself there so have asked for a contact e-mail address, but that will take 7 days for a reply.
If anyone has a contact E-mail address for O2 could they please post it up here and we can see if we can get the sponsors to lean on Endemol UK
BTW Sidrat if you are still around, can you see if SukySue wants to come back here, and see if you can get Roy P. As this is a regulated forum, we do not get the characters like Stuart Hart here or Early Riser

Well ROB, I didn't see your reference to me as the third witch until today, cheeky mare, you are. Let's just say it takes one to know one.
On a more serious note, having seen the split house I think the picture could represent what the housemates will look like after living in the hell house for the next six weeks.
I think the producers have taken leave of their senses. Why don't they go the whole hog and have the housemates in an arena fighting to the death? The audience could all go down to Elstree each Friday and boo and cheer to their heart's content.
I'm really starting to wonder whether this programme should be classed as entertainment any longer and whether we should all still be watching it. I know I sound like a pious old f**t and I'm really not, but we're a nice bunch of gentle people in the main on this board. That's why we love TiBB so much, watching people being forced to watch other people lounging on sofas, eating and drinking too much while being deprived of food, drink, comfortable beds, chairs, hot water and reasonable cooking facilitiies, in the name of entertainment seems to be carrying things a little too far. Sorry but that's how I feel.

I am as gutted as I was early this morning. Normally I go in to mourning when the show and more to the point the website closes. I already have a feeling of loss. I don't blame Endamol so much as Ch4, who I believe are and have been pulling the strings this year. They have, after all, paid for the rights for several years.
Very much a case of money grabbing.
Big Brother had serious cult status...... Not any more. Greed will receive its own dessert, just or otherwise.
Ps. sidrat, we have loved our smilies as it reflects our rather irreverent humour. You will note however that as our collective anger rises smilies are less of an issue and are not, it seems, as approprate as they were. THIS WILL, ONE HOPES, REVERT!!!:colour:

The housemates are suffering more now, but only a little more so than before.
Let's not delude ourselves to think they were living in luxury before. If they hadn't chosen to go into the house we would say they were being denied basic human rights.
They already had a total lack of privacy -something prisoners do not have to endure, complete isolation from the outside world and the possibility that they will leave the house to a chorus of boos - hated by the British public. All this for little or no reward.
I think these hardships are far tougher than having to eat basic rations and cook on an outdoor stove.
I wouldn't go in the Big Brother house even if it was set in a 5-star hotel.
I enjoyed the old format, in previous years, so it would be a bit self-righteous for me to criticise the producers for this.
As to how entertaining it will be, only time will tell.

Hi Sidrat :cat: and welcome to the board. Sticks has mentioned you before (btw we have another Graeme on the board so it gets a bit confusing if you call Sticks by his real name) and I have also read your posts on other boards. I hope you enjoy posting here.
I agree with you, Sticks and everyone else who has been bewailing the state of BB3 this year and how awful the 'Split House' idea is, though it did surprise me how well the housemates reacted to it last night. I expected ructions, but the general concesus seemed to be that they thought it was a 'wicked idea'. However, that was only after an hour or so and the true reality of it had probably not set in yet, and they also don't realise that C4 appear to be intending to make it last for the remainder of the show.
I actually think it is an interesting idea for maybe ONE week, at a push two, but is completely unacceptable for it to last longer than that. Not only is is totaly unfair on the housemates (though I do appreciate that they have signed up to 'expect the unexpected') but I feel like many other people that rather than enhancing our viewing, it RUINS it.
I don't know whether C4 read these forums and take note of our opinions, but I hope they do. I think I will be emailing this and several other threads from here direct to Helen Hawken. We have corresponded several times before and she has always replied so I will let you know what she says this time.
First up mods get rid of the smileys and animated things, they do nothing. nothing whatsoever, except put your off what you're trying to post.
I'm sorry you feel that way, the smilies are an integral part of our board and the majority of our other members, including the three admin, love them and would sorely miss them if they were to go. We like to use them to brighten up our posts, but that does not mean we cannot discuss things sensibly.
I'm afraid they're here to stay, but I hope you are too, as I enjoyed reading you post above and look forward to many more.

I'll just have to imagine it as writing on childrens fancy note paper. Wonder if you can get scented Smileys?? (work on it!!!)
Sticks, not graeme, got it.
I originally believed it was going to be just a week too, which still unfair but almost bearable if you're strong enough. Enduring nine weeks on top of nominations will break most people, certainly the posers and the umm shall we say, maturity unstable among them.
Anyway, baseball is on and although that can be far far crueler than BB could ever be, the prizes are so much richer. Who'd remember H&P in 100 years? Sammy Sosa remembered in a 100 hundred years EASY. I wonder if there's an easy way to get your own baseball card? Sorry rambling.
Take it easy guys.
Suggestion to people attending or passing the BB household. If someone wouldn't mind shouting out "Tear the bars down" to the inmates that is what they should be called now, I'd be most greatful.

The 'experiment' was, as you know, based on the Harvard study. Scary and had to be stopped in both cases for different reasons.
This was where they split students into prisoners and prison wardens wasn't it? And the prisoners were maltreated by their 'wardens', and showed signs of illness?
I studied it in psychology last year.
To an extent, this is a bit like that, as the rich housemates might start to believe they SHOULD be there, and act a certain way because they are expected to.
I think the split is cruel!
I'm glad you took the comment about Kate and Spencer being split up Mo (not that i'm a Kate & Spencer fan you understand!) but in general, I think it's awful that various groups in the house have been split up. Even felt sorry for Sandy (for a second). And poor Jade is stuck with scheming Adele! What will become of her.
Actually, watching it on E4, this is what I've seen:
Jade in tears, which made me feel awful for her. I think this will toughen her up though, and she'll grow up quite a bit.
Sandy, Alex and Adele (the bad coven - maybe you can put a spell on them ROB?) are still in close contact.
Spencer and Kate are spending as much time as they can close to each other, playfighting, hugging, kissing (or passing beer through mouths) and flirting.
Sophie and Lee are getting increasingly close, with Adele on the sidelines.
Alex is still winding a lot of people up.
The point I am (so eloquently!) trying to make is that nothing much has actually changed in the dynamics of the house (as far as I have seen) except the physical separation.
The split is a good thing in that it tests who's friendships are genuine. At the moment it is showing me that, as horrible as they are, Sandy and Alex genuinely like each other (or at least like each other more than they like the rest of the housemates), as they seem to be in contact asregularily as possible.
Kate and Spencer: Despite Jade being there, touchy feely etc, Spencer seems content to spend time with Kate, and they both spend as much time together as possible, despite the separation (and continue to stare at each other with puppy eyes), so I think they are genuine too.
The less genuine 'friends' would make less of an effort: Sophie doesn't seem to have as much time for Adele anymore, for example. I guess it's early in the week, so I may be wrong, but thats the way I see things.
Anyway, I think that this for the rest of the time in the house is unnecessary, and i don't want to see it. I agree with LEE - two weeks at a push. The whole point in big brother was to see how people interacted in a setting as close to normal as they could get (ish).
I have noticed though, that the barriers aren't defeating some friendships (as mentioned earlier) and there isn't any bad feelings between rich an poor (that werent there already) except Spencer's anger with Jonny and Sandy, which has subsided.
BUT I'm willing to bet that channel four won't show them sitting around the table, talking between the groups, or them laughing and joking together, or Kate kissing Spencer to pass him beer (yes Kate, i'm sure you were only trying to give him beer, it's not like you WANTED to kiss him).
I think they'll show all the footage they have of the housemates 'fighting' and being unhappy with each other.
I always knew channel 4 editted some things to be perceived a certain way, but now the only way to see what really is happening will be to watch E4 (and even then they blank out the interesting bits.)
Hmmmmmmmmmm.

I think Alex is enjoying himself now. He dosn't seem at all fazed about having to do without. He has been smiling most of the afternoon:hugesmile:
I couldn't believe it when they said the bars would be up for the rest of the series. What a stupid idea:mad:
If you havn't got interactive tv ( which I havn't ) you have to put up with what is shown. They hardly ever show what's going on on the poor side.
If they believe this makes for good viewing ie.. the bars, they are badly mistaken.
Who wants to watch a program when there are bars obscuring your view?
I hope they get lots and lots of complaints and think again.

This is one of the threads from 2002 where we discussed tonight's episode of Big Brother: Best Shows Ever.
Makes me cringe a bit reading my old posts. I was really cynical about this series at the time.

I’m shocked people were calling BB3 boring until this, I loved BB3 and was hooked from the start. It was the first series I watched on TV
Marsh.

I wonder if Dermot is wishing he hadn't made that link now. And Davina must be wishing her career wasn't link with BB today.
:joker:
So strange to see the controversy of classic BB.
If only they knew what was to come.

People were missing BB2 still when BB3 was on. That was a reason behind the negativity.
Series 3 was the first series discussed on here, when it was happening.
