View Full Version : Are Channel 4 stupid! It's the 9th anniversary!

What a load of idiots at Channel 4.

It's the 9th anniversary. The tenth series, but the 9th anniversary.

If you were born in 2000, it would be your tenth birthday in 2010 not 2009.

Buffoons can't count properly!

If you were born in 2000, you would be 10 in 2010, not 2009.

The tenth anniversary is next year.

It's the 10th year, but that does not make it the 10th "anniversary".

For example, if you were born in the year 2000, you would be living your life in the tenth year right now, but the actual 10th anniversary would be next year.

The word "anniversary" is application to absolutely anything and means the same thing.

Therefore, the actual anniversary is next year.

Not this year.

This might be the 10th series, but it does [/b]not[/b] make it the 10th anniversary.

You don't seem to understand that the tenth year isn't actually defined as the tenth anniversary.

The tenth anniversary is after the full 10 years.

Therefore next year is the 10th anniversary.

To me, it means an annual event marking a date at which 'something' happened.

Tenth anniversary of marriage = married 10 years.

BB 10th Anniversary = tenth series OR ten years since the show began.

What's so hard?

No, you've got it wrong again.

Suppose you were married in 2000. The tenth year of marriage would be 2009, but the actual tenth wedding anniversary would be 2010.

Hence, a similar rule applies regarding Big Brother. This is the tenth series and tenth year of being on air, but the tenth anniversary is next year.

Gavin is right, next year will be the 10th anniversary, but this year is the 10th year the show has been on air.

It does annoy me that they've been calling it the '10th Anniversary', but seriously, just get over it. I have, so I'm sure you can too.

I'm celebrating this year because it's the 10th series of the show, which makes more sense than celebrating 10 years since it first began anyway.

No it doesn't. They're making it relateable to the public, if they'd have said "BB is 10 years old this week" midway through BB11 (SERIES 11), it would just seem odd.

If it started in 2000 it's been on 10 years (INCLUDING THE YEAR 2000).

No one is disputing the fact that this is the 10th series or 10th season or 10th year that Big Brother has been on the air including the OP.

However, I am amazed at how many people argued that this is, in fact, the 10th anniversary. I am equally amazed how many people think that the definition of anniversary changes if it is not referring to a person. I hope, for the sake of the UK's future, that you guys were taking the piss and didn't really believe your arguments were true.

it takes like a year to prepare the house etc, so it is likely to have been planned in 1999 ready for launch in 2000 so it would be 10 years, the actual show is the produce of a years work.

Lets pretend, for a moment, that instead of Big Brother we are talking about you getting married. You start planning your wedding in 1999 and actually get married in 2000. In 2001, just one year later, would you celebrate your 1st anniversary or your second anniversary? Your 1st, right? What about the next year? Would you celebrate your 2nd or your 3rd anniversary? Of course, your 2nd, right?

So pull that out a few more years. In 2009, you would celebrate your 9th anniversary not your 10th.

And for the record here is how several sources defines the word anniversary:

Merriam-Webster Dictionary: the annual recurrence of a date marking a notable event

The Free Dictionary: The annually recurring date of a past event, especially one of historical, national, or personal importance

MSN Encarta: annual observation of past event: a date that is observed on an annual basis because it is the same date as an important event in a past year

Hopefully now you will understand what we mean.

Hopefully now you will understand what we mean.

i always understood what you meant, i just think it is more fitting to celebrate it this year

I guess I misunderstood your post. I thought you were defending that it was the 10th anniversary. I didn't see where anyone was disputing whether it was right or wrong to celebrete it this year. The discussion was whether or not it was the 10th anniversary as reported by BB.

Its been going for 10 years. so 10th anniversary

it takes like a year to prepare the house etc, so it is likely to have been planned in 1999 ready for launch in 2000 so it would be 10 years, the actual show is the produce of a years work.

I know this is a Big Brother forum, but it's still surprising how stupid some people are.

Anyway, I agree that it's pretty stupid to label this series as "the 10-year anniversary of Big Brother".

Really, they had 2 options.

First, they could have celebrated this year's show as being the "10th Big Brother", or the "10th Annual Big Brother".

OR, they could celebrate the show next year. I know it might sound strange using "the 10-year anniversary of Big Brother" in conjunction with BB11, however, they could refer to BB11 as Big Brother 2010 more instead. I think they do that now somewhat anyway. For example, when Davina announces the winners she says "the winner of Big Brother 2004 is NADIA" doesn't she? Also, wiki lists UK BB's by year and not by #, for what that's worth.

They should've said they were celebrating the 10th series, not the 10th year. They sound silly when they say that!

I cannot believe how many stupid ****ers there are on this forum. Jesus ****ing Christ.

That guy you take the piss out of.. he who complains to ofcom, the OP... he has more brains than most people on here put together.

He actually had to explain it like ten times.

I will never post on here again... it's an insult to my mind.

sorry, but anyone on here who thinks big brother is ten years old is completely thick. it started in 2000. 2000+10 equals 2010. its 2009 in case you didnt know.:puzzled:
