View Full Version : What video game(s) are you playing at the moment?
Me, Fallout 3, and loving it. Possibly one of the best games I have played this year. Admittedly, I bought the game months ago and at first I wasn't really feeling it. Recently I started over (possibly for the fifth time) and knuckled down to try and get further than the first town (lol) and I'm actually enjoying it now. I love the character customisation, the dialogue options, the open-ended gameplay, how the world around you changes with every decision you make, the freedom to play however you like. It's amazing. Easily the second best RPG I've played, closely behind FFVII, although this may all change the more I play.
So, enough of my rambling. What game(s) are you all playing at the moment?
I could really never get into Fallout 3 for some reason. Now Oblivion I still have sex with at least once a month.
Final Fantasy VII is my favourite game ever. It still holds such a strong position of nostalgia in me that I break it out at least once a year. The music, the characters, just the general emotion you get from the game if you got into it at the time, all just ****ing incredible. IX comes close behind too. Massively overated, despite the fact that the central villian quotes opera and wears a thong.

Same reason why it is also my favourite game ever. I remember playing it for the first time a decade ago and I absolutely ****ing sucked at it. I was new to RPGs and had no idea what materia was and how to use it, lol. But regardless of my immense suckiness, I loved it. Gaming was at it's best back then.

Also, on a completely random note, Pop Will Eat Itself are awesome. Awesome for later spawning The Wonder Stuff.

During Microsoft's E3 2009 conference, it was announced that Final Fantasy XIII was to be released "Spring 2010"[56] worldwide and for both consoles[57] (except Japan) and that a concrete date has not been determined yet.

I love FFVII, I must play it again sometime. I've given up on SSX Blur, the controls for it are quite stupid, it's like patting your head and rubbing your belly at the same time. I'm still chugging away at Okami and Hotel Dusk (Which I LOVE).

I'm playing Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor. It's a brilliant game, if you have any DS apart from the DSi and like RPG's then I'd reccomend it. Only problem is that you have to import it or by it at an import shop, I'd say it's worth it though.
Just make sure you haven't got a DSi if you import games.

Underworld's very good, it has a few annoying glitches but the levels and story in particular are very good. If you liked Legend and Anniversary you'll like Underworld.

I haven't been playing many games recently either, I played my Xbox for the first time in abour a week or two yesterday but I expect I'll be playing more when 9th March rolls around.
If I play any games it tends to be either the odd game of Tatsunoko on the Wii or a bit of Phoenix Wright on the DS. Unless it's Tekken or Left 4 Dead I don't play on the xbox much really.
Don't be silly. It's just a dry spell!
I have been like this since this entire generation started really.
Theirs a few artsy single player classics you can actually get into, then it's all either ~family fun time or games made for competetive nutjobs who take themselves far too seriously online.
I loved the days when gamers played games. Now everyone plays games. I hate it :(.

Ghostbusters on Xbox 360
It's decent, but it's only 8 hours long and sooooooo linear. Normally I don't mind getting my hand held by a game if it keeps up the pace, but it feels a little suffocating in this game.
The voice acting, courtesy of the original cast, is top-notch, which I expected, but the script is not up to scratch with the movies. I was a little perturbed by Peter Venkman's lecherousness around his 21 year old love interest. I realise this is in keeping with his flirtaciousness towards Dana in the movies, but at least Dana was his own age and you could understand their connection. It just felt out of character.
I quite like how the combat (which basically plays like a third-person shooter) never gets too repetitive and there is always some new technique to learn and the enemies and levels are scary and imaginative. The weapons are simply awesome.
It gets a 7/10 from me.

Don't judge the wii on it's casual games, when you get to the REAL games it's as much a contender as the other two.
I have been like this since this entire generation started really.
Theirs a few artsy single player classics you can actually get into, then it's all either ~family fun time or games made for competetive nutjobs who take themselves far too seriously online.
I loved the days when gamers played games. Now everyone plays games. I hate it :(.
When Online works it's magical but most of the time you'll always be put in a game with annoying children or people with some serious issues.

Because it has relatively few gaming classics and is technologically invalid compared to the PlayStation and Xbox. Plus when the novelty wears off most people realise they would much rather play games sitting down. In bed.
If doing exercises is your thing then fair enough, just don't call it gaming.

What cracks me up even more is the fact that more than any publisher, Nintendo always set themselves apart for quality approval B.S. and last generation bigged themselves up as being a 'true' developer and not a corporate mega giant like Microsoft.
Oh how times have changed. Nintendo will now happily digitise anything they possibly can and call it a 'game'.

Quality approval my ass! They often approve poor PlayStation(2) ports that just DON'T function well on the Wii. Ninjabread Man for example. One of the worst games for the Wii. Ever. That was a PS2 port, and it just doesn't work.
Data Design Interactive are the worst gaming company. Everybody that has heard of this company knows that, but Nintendo are allowing their garbage through.

How many classics have Nintendo churned out for the gamers this time around? ... that don't involve the same old characters?
How many classic games have Microsoft churned out that doesn't involve Halo or one of their major franchises? That argument doesn't work. Nintendo are one of the best Game publishers If we were to make a list of the best games ever Legend of Zelda would take up a few spots in the top 10, Mario would be up there as well as Metroid among others. Apart from a few miss-steps this generation you cannot fault the first party games for the Nintendo.
All the really awful 'games' have been third party games trying to get a cut of the casual market, and every console has bad games and if you judge a console by those games then no company is gonna come up smelling of roses. If you were to gather all the best games so far from the wii and compared them to the best games from other consoles it would hold up well. It's the third party developers looking for a quick flash in the pond that's the problem with the Wii.

Yeah but Nintendo allows this. All with the quality seal B.S.
As for top quality Xbox & PS3 games that don't involve major franchise characters?
Mass Effect, Bioshock, Infamous, Crackdown, Dead Rising, Just Cause, LittleBigPlanet, Assasins Creed, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead, Dragon Age, Saints Row and Gears Of War are all brand new gaming franchises that have started this generation.
Can the Wii even come close to that? What reputable new gaming franchises has it established for the gamer this generation? Very few. It's simply a dumping ground for the same old characters and third parties who are making a quick buck off generic casual games.
Developers are not that interested in developing serious games for the Wii. And why would they be? If I had a game idea I would take it to the Xbox or PS3 where I had the hardware to express it and the owners to buy it. All this because while Nintendo were trying to get my nan to play games, they forgot about the gamers.
The Wii sells because of it's casual appeal. But Nintendo really need to rely on more than the same old characters to sell the games. If they didn't, the GameCube wouldn't have bombed.

Fair points but my main point is that the Wii isn't a crap console, It's first party franchises are pretty much second to none and the hardcore games that are released on the wii are just as good as something you'd find on the others. It's got the crappy casual games yes but to dismiss the good games on the console because of them is ignorance.
Also all those games on that list are third party games, name me first party games since that was my point in the last post. Since we're making lists here's a list of Wii games that are Critically acclaimed/Non casual/Hardcore games.
Mario Galaxy
New Super Mario Bros
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Metroid Prime: Echoes
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
No More Heroes 1+2 (New IP)
Silent Hill (The ps2 and PSP versions are downgraded ports of the wii version)
Dead Space: Extraction
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom (New IP)
Punch Out
Mad World (New IP)
The Conduit (New IP)
That's just from memory, If I were to research it I could add many more. The strength of the Wii and Nintendo consoles does lie in the first party games but the thing is 9 times out of 10 Nintendo brand games are brilliant and I can't say for sure but that mark of quality only extends to the first party games if I remember correctly.
The Wii's not perfect but it isn't crap either, it's the one console that has the most potential for improvement and I think it's sequel could blow the PS4 and Xbox 720 (or whatever it will be called) out the water if they address some of the big problems with the Wii.
The thing is as well is that Microsoft and Sony rely on their first party franchises too, They wouldn't dare release a console nowadays without Halo (Halo 3, ODST, Halo Wars and Halo Reach so far this generation)/Gran Turismo/God of War/Uncharted. Yes, these are new franchises but when Sony and Microsoft begin to match Nintendo's years in the game industry they'll come to rely on these franchises as much as Nintendo relies on their's. It's all about brand familiarity. At the end of the day there's never been a bad Gran Turismo/Halo/GOW/Mario/Zelda so as long as the quality keeps up who cares?
It's my opinion anyway, no such thing as a bad console only bad games for it. (with the exception of the N-Gage......)

The GameGear with Sonic and its colour screen.. But many still bought the GameBoy with its grey screen with dots for graphics..
I'm not talking soley about first party games though, which is why I named the games I named. Who cares who made the game? I certainly don't. I could go on litteraly forever naming new third party IP's for both the Xbox and the PlayStation. I'm not totally dismissing the Wii but they have left gamers like me out in the dust. I don't like casual games and to be quiet honest I couldn't give a flying **** about Mario, Zelda and Metroid either.
So where does that leave people like me? It leaves us not wanting to buy a Wii. And the fact that Nintendo made the console for dirt cheap to maximise profits at the expense of next generation graphics does not help either. Third party developers simply have no interest in bringing most of their big budget ideas to the Wii now. Quiet rightly. I would say in this respect, for people like me, the Wii is definately a bad console.
And to be honest I don't think Microsoft and Sony will be relying on old hat too much next time around considering the depth of classics established this generation. Halo is finishing it's story arc and Metal Gear Solid has already done likewise. In those games place for killer app priority will come the franchises christened this generation.
Really, when comparing depth of catalogue, the Wii absoloutely cannot compete. If you like Nintendo's classics fair enough, but as great as those games are, surely you must agree that Nintendo should put more effort - real effort - into developing new franchises for the gamers?

Nintendo DO make new First Party IP's though they just never got as much media coverage as the classics. The one I can think of from the top of my head is 'A Boy and his Blob' which was a critically acclaimed puzzle/platformer. There's definately been others this generation but I can't think of them which is probably partly Nintendo's fault for not pushing them as much. I do agree that Nintendo's own brand relies around the classics but as long as they keep up the quality it's all fair really. Every console needs it's killer apps it's just that Nintendo's main franchises are already well established in comparision to the Playstation and Xbox that have always relied more on other developers in the past although they've got a handful of their own franchises now.
The Wii is gonna end up balancing out I think eventually, the casual market won't last forever and I can see their focus shifting towards proper games, Look at the DS, it still has a lot of Casual games but there's just as many proper games to even it out now.

The Wii won't catch up. It's hardware is simply too dated. It was dated in 2005 when it was conceived. It's just riddiculous now. Whilst I agree that graphics don't make the games, these games need capable systems to be even considered for production in the first place. If I approach a publisher with a development team who has an amazing action game idea right now, chances are it's heading to the Xbox or Playstation. Not only is it where the hardware is, but it's where the players are.
Aleination. Nintendo have excelled in this area this generation.
Obviously the DS is a whole different kettle of fish as handheld games are approached in a much different way, which is pretty ironic really. When you look back through history Nintendo have always had the weakest and most simplistic handhelds but they have always excelled.

I dunno, if graphics mattered then the Xbox or Gamecube would have came out on top last time since the Ps2 was REALLY dated in comparision. With the right games they can pull it back. Look at the Ps3, it did abysmal for it's first two or so years but now they've got the developer support back and they're making a hell of a comeback. The Wii could make a recovery in the Gamer's eyes it just needs the right games and the right focus.

Come on. The gulf wasn't that big though. The Wii's graphics gulf is huge. It's format medium is DVD! No hard drive either, which is essential these days. Plus the PlayStation 2 also had the advantage of having a stupidly big demographic to make games for. It's not just that the Wii's hardware is bad for making, say, great action games, it's that the majority of the action gamers are probably going to be found on the other two systems.

Fair point, Well I think it can at least make a step in the right direction for the Wii2, it's got the strength of a large install base behind it to make a start.

They paid so much attention to the casual market that they forgot the hardcore gamers. Hardcore being a misleading title consider those 'hardcore gamers' have bought tens of millions of Xbox and PlayStation's between them.
If Nintendo can appeal to the Xbox and PlayStation crowd next time around, they could rule the world. That said I highly doubt it will happen. Nintendo have their market now and they are making a riddiculous amount of money off it. I can't see them ever being associated with being the 'mans' console, so to speak [Horrible generalisations here, I know. Nature of arguing this beast].

I think they could do what they do with the DS though and even it out eventually.
and back to the original topic I bought some games today, I had Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and CSI for the DS. I was gonna get an Xbox Game but I decided to wait for FFXIII as it'd get sidelined by the time that comes out anyway.

The Nintendo Wii is great for those that hate games.. :) That is my great view on the matter.
Today I will be going into town, in the middle, to buy Test Drive Unlimited for the Xbox 360, only £10.. Happy times.

That's true if you choose to ignore a good chunk of it's library.
Napoleon: Total War looks brilliant. I'm not really a fan of the genre but I'll give it a go. My boyfriend has had two of the previous games and wants this one.

I've been playing Sega All-Stars Racing since yesterday and I'm not ashamed to admit it's brilliant. Okay, it's far from perfect. Nobody cares about Big the Cat and Billy Hatcher. Couldn't we have had Ristar and the car from OutRun instead? Also the mission mode is a bit naff.
Otherwise though, an excellent kart racer that gives Mario Kart a run for its money.

The demo was quite fun, I'll probably buy it when it becomes cheaper.
I'm playing through Apollo Justice at the moment, then I'm gonna start the Miles Edgeworth game and then I should be done with both in time for FFXIII.

I only just caught the Call Of Duty bug. Never bothered playing it up until a mate brought up Modern Warfare 2 the other day. I love it. I was expecting something really slow paced but it moves quiet fast. You can have pretty fun deathmatch shootouts in it. It's a bit like Counter Strike. It has all the tactical stuff but it's fast enough to be a run and gunner too - if you want to play that way.
Been playing ODST and Borderlands too. The start of ODST was atrocious and I hate the format and all the changes but whatever, it's still pretty decent at the least. Getting into it a bit more now.

Ah I brought SH2 for the PC a while back, the Maria level is creepy as hell (I only had the original SH2 for the Xbox).
I've heard that Homecoming's not brilliant but I've seen it for quite cheap so I might give it a go when i got some money to spare.

To me, it is the only SH game which I wouldnt class as "classic Silent Hill"
Maria level? Director's cut? Yeah creepy. It was all creepy!
SH2 is definitely my fav, out of all the SH games I have played.

I finished completing RE5 in about a day yesterday, lol. I 'm obviously late to the party, but my own thoughts would be that the game is not bad. On the technical/presentation side, it's marvellous in fact. Formless, amorphous monsters simply pop out of the screen, a stunning chase sequence plays out with no slowdown or pop-up. Environments and characters alike are high in detail (at least up until the later levels). You can always trust Capcom to pull out all the stops where visuals are concerned. I was also pleased at the wealth of replay value provided by weapon upgrades and enjoyable gunplay, that encourages skill and fast reflexes.
Now for the flaws. Levels are overly samey, linear and lack suspense, this is compensated by a cumbersome inventory system that can often mean the difference between life and death if you don't equip the correct weapon in time, which results in a sort of false sense of dread and tension (you're often left screaming 'oh no I'm gonna die, If don't sort out my gun and ammo). There is an oppressive sense of mind-numbing repetition throughout the game in fact, which just shouldn't be how a Resident Evil game feels. The storyline, for all intents and purposes is rubbish. Gone is the sense of mystery and unpredictable twists that the series pretty much mastered in Code: Veronica and RE4. What we are left with is a story which begins with interesting themes such as third world countries, biological weapons and the arms trade. It all seems very complex at first, until it is revealed that Wesker is yet again behind all of this, he hates humanity and wants to take over the world *yawn*.
Overall a worthwhile game that I hope Capcom will nonetheless make strides to improve upon in the next instalment.
