Just watching on the news about an Iranian plane crash where over 168 people have died. (It happened earlier today)

This surprises me because they have not given this story a lot of coverage. With all the recent plane crashes and the immense coverage, especially with the french airways plane crash, it strikes me as a bit weird that there's not a lot more coverage.

Is it because of the proximity to the Uk or is it something else??

What do you guys think??

A lot of it depends on its relevance to the uk public....were there any british on the plane, it also depends on other events which are going on, the whole swine flu pandemic seems to be taking priority.

I don't think any Brits were on board but who's to say that people living in the Uk didn't have family or friends that could have been on board.

I wonder who decides how much coverage a story gets.

Yeah, I get what your saying!
There's heaps of attrocities going on all over the world, and yet Michael Jackson dominated the news for a good week, the mainstream news tends to go for things they think are most relevant and will gain the viewers interest.
The iranian plane crash is the top story on bbc website.

The A330 crash has been more covered as it's been between 2 big countries (France and Brazil) and it had a lot of foreigners in that plane. Also, the circumstances around the crash were very special and still are very complicated to understand. The whole 'lost plane in the ocean' line was loved by the medias.

The Iranian crash is sad thing too because it's never funny to loose people in such conditions but it got less coverage for 3 reasons:
1. Iran is probably the most hated country at the moment with North Korea.
2. There isn't the 'special' factor about it that the Air France crash had.
3. There haven't been much foreigners in the plane.
