View Full Version : In future BB should do away with Smoking Corner.....

It really is time BB did away with Smoking Corner completely, certainly for BB11.................although I would abolish it next week.............
Smoking Corner allows housemates like Lisa to create a bolt hole apart from the main group...........
also I bet anything American BB doesnt have a smoking corner by now......the UK hangs on to something that is outmoded......
Smoking corner must go.....................housemates must not have priveliged bolt holes..............

The only problem is that, thanks to the UK smoking ban, they're required to have a designated outdoor smoking area (though I don't see why they can't just allow them to smoke anywhere as long as it is outdoors).

Whether there was a smoking corner or not wouldn't make much of a difference. Smokers will tend to congregate together in a group, designated area or not.

smoking causes cancer, no ifs or but(t)s - idiots who smoke are a drain on the NHS. We dont show smoking in advertising and we should not allow it on BB.

People who smoke are addicted to a drug called nicotine and do not act rationally and need to be forced and discriminated against

See if you're going to adopt a patronising approach it helps if there's some intelligent thought behind what you're saying.

Yes as a former smoker i'm well aware of the facts and that nicotine is as addictive as heroin, then there is breaking the actual habbit of 'oh i've just had a meal...time for a smoke'.

Alcohol is a massive drain on the nhs, so do we discriminate against drinkers, obesity is a drain on the nhs....do we ban all fast food and discriminate against people who are overweight to make them lose it.....

Whilst nicotine is a drug...and can lead an individually to get a bit narky when they haven't had a smoke and the nicotine levels decrease it you're still completely conscious and aware of your behaviour.

I can't stand the smell of smoke now, I'd encourage any mates who were thinking of quiting to quit. But i also respect the rights of those who choose to smoke and am strongly opposed to discrimination and the social exclusion of individuals

without bans and discrimination we would still have to endure travel, clubs, pubs, waiting rooms etc stinking from the toxic fumes of those people who have the "freedom" to smoke

get real folks

in 20 year smoking will be banned outright and we will look on it with the same disgust as we do on the charming Victorian habit of emptying your bedpan out the window and onto the street

"The only problem is that, thanks to the UK smoking ban, they're required to have a designated outdoor smoking area "
Not true, the law refers only to places where you can't smoke, no mention of where you can.
Smokers die younger, therefore require fewer health services and pension payments. The taxes they pay are a bonus for all the non-smokers.

Smoking itself has not been banned. But smoking in the airspace of others who do not wish to inhale smoke has.

To those that say they have a right to smoke anywhere..i say this:

You smoke..the product of this is smoke which you say you have a right to breathe out onto me.
I drink..the product of which is urine. Is it ok if i piss on your head.:joker:

BB is a microcosm of society. Until they ban smoking in the UK outright, I don't see a problem allowing it. Just my opinions.

As for BBUSA, smoking is still allowed (though they seem to avoid showing it when possible). Though I can tell you, in the US there are very few states here that still allow indoor smoking (bars, clubs, etc..) and in some states smoking (outside) on public property is forbidden.

If the point is purely about smoking creating an 'artificial island', people will naturally put themselves in to groups over things where they find common ground. The smoking area just creates another scenario where people may bond over common ground i.e. smoking.

It's also interesting how you talk about the deconstruction of the house....in previous years BB has actively divided the house in to rich and poor (i.e. last year with the bedrooms) they did it this year with those who had housemate status and those who didn't which imediately created groups......just human nature mate.

I like the way that smokers refer to their "right" to smoke. There is no such thing as a "right" to take a drug.
As for discrimination, when it comes to overweight people it is almost encouraged to insult and berate them as the right thing to do to "encourage" them to lose weight. I have no problem with anyone smoking around me anywhere, my missus is a smoker and, although I would encourage her to quit, that has to be her decision.
I don't agree with the nanny state, and legislation stating how people live their lives. But people have to understand that they don't have a god given right to do anything that they like, if what they do has a detrimental effect on other people's lives.

haha i love these people who think their going to die of second hand smoke coz their walking past a smoker on the street

i have been beaten up and bottled many times walking home from town because of drunk wankers. why dont we ban alcohol den?

im betting the social costs of alcohol FAR outweigh that of smoking. think about it. unprovoked attacks, A&E fill ups, drunk drivers, divorce, beating the **** out of your wife, your kids, your dog, kicking in windows

last time I checked, a malboro does not make you do these things. but drink can.

I feel alcohol is by far 100 times worse than Smoking. If drink was consumed as regularly as smokers smoke it would be just as bad if not worse for u than smoking.

Plus how many crimes are commited due to excessive cigarette abuse. But i don't see people fighting against alcohol as much as smoking no do i ****. Reason being its not advertisted in the same light as smokin is.

Well the whole idea of a democratic society is that people have a 'right' to choose, in my previous post when i refered to the smokers 'rights'....it was in reference to their right of 'choosing' to smoke.
Whilst the tabloid media may take to insulting people who are overweight, It's not something i personally agree, but at the end of the day I can only justify my own thoughts and behaviour.
I think it's great that smoking has been banned in bars, on public transport etc etc with regards to those who don't smoke not having to suffer the effects of passive smoking. Before none smokers didn't have a choice about whether they inhaled the smoke, with the public bans and smokers tending to congregate in one area we have the choice as to whether we stand next to people who are smoking.
People constantly act in ways which could be detrimental to others lives e.g. wreckless driving, binge drinking and the aftermath, so where do we draw the line......other than to bring in a nanny state which to an extent we seem to be already moving towards

BJ

I'm surprised it's taken 6 weeks for someone to come up with this topic. It happens every year.

Probably, OP, you'd like BB to stop supplying them with junk food for treats and make sure they live on a healthy diet. They could totally ban drink too then they could all have a good sleep EVERY night before we start watching.

they put a lot more in to the nhs than you do and if smoking was banned tomorrow i would love to see your face when you see how much more tax you will be paying

1. To the OP, I haven't watched any episodes from the new season yet (though I have been recording them), but I'm pretty sure that last season they had a "smokers corner". Not sure if it was specifically designated as that or if it was just where the smokers went when they needed their fix. (edited to add: I'm talking about BBUSA)

2. To the person who mentioned the Victorian custom of emptying bedpans out the window... Dude... check your facts. :) That is really not true of the Victorians. Of earlier periods, yes. Victorians, no.

3. I highly doubt BB gives a rat's @ss about health and safety. They just want people to watch the show. Having a place where people can easily form a clique to the exclusion of others suits their plans just fine. I don't see it disappearing any time soon.

If they really cared about health and safety, they would ban alcohol. The UK is one of the countries with the fastest growing rate of alcoholism in the world. And the group which is growing the fastest is women in their 20s.
