Story culled from the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8154419.stm)

It was said that in 1918 the first bout of flu was mild and then ignored.

Then it came back and wiped out 40% of the human population later in that year.

We have had one healthy six year old killed by it and now a health six year old boy (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/Swine-Flu-Kills-A-Healthy-Six-Year-Old-Boy-From-Kent-Sky-Sources-Say-After-A-Government-Warning/Article/200907315339776?lpos=UK_News_Carousel_Region_2&lid=ARTICLE_15339776_Swine_Flu_Kills_A_Healthy_Six-Year-Old_Boy_From_Kent%2C_Sky_Sources_Say%2C_After_A_Go vernment_Warning).

Has the lethal strain started early?

How many of us on TiBB will be victims of this killer flu pandemic :shocked:

0. It's just a scare for publicity and ratings. We Americans already suffered the mass news and it's nothing. The only people effected are young with moderately well to poor immune systems and people who are recovering a serious ailment or not in tip top shape of health. Not many will die. It's a joke. After all, influenza does kill 50,000 people a year or so and no one fears that. It's a very small concern.

That's bullshit. A statement was released by a high-ranking WHO member, saying that governments were seriously over-playing the impact of swine flu and that it was no worse than regular winter flu.

you do realise that is the worst case scenario it could be as few as 3000 yet again the media do all in their power to cause mass panic and hysteria

...And very few elderly people seem to be affected by swine flu which will bring the number of deaths down (according to a Dr on Breakfast telly)

350 people a day will be dying (http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/114437)

They scoffed in 1918, yet 40% of the human race were wiped out.

This is 1918 all over again.

Lets not forget how many people have survived, and the so called healthy people to have died could have had undetected health problems...Im interested to hear results of post mortem. Theres no evidence to go into panic at this stage. Its no worse than seasonal flu at this stage

and for those who think like me does anyone wonder if they are bigging it up to be huge as just think the amount spent on tamiflu could help a government come out the other side of a recession

You forget the great flu pandemic of 1918 and the later one in the 1960's

No time for complacency

Shool halls and community centres will be turned into emergency morgues as the dead pile up.

There will be so many that crematoria will be overloaded resulting in mass pyres in the countryside.

Curfews will be imposed

Anyone with a temperature will be arrested and indefinitelty detained in quarantine conditions.

Schools will be closed

Cinemas and theartres will be shut, as will gymns leisure centers and other places of public gatherings.

Places of religious worship will be shut down.

Only select shops will be allowed to open.

The army will patrol the streets.

This film clips shows exactly how it will be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grbSQ6O6kbs)

Oh Sticks I see no evidence of this going to happen. Most people have had very mild symptoms. A vaccine is due. Drug treatment is much more effective along with improved procedures to prevent it spreading.

40% wiped out!! where the hell are you getting that figure from? I think you might mean 40% affected, the ACTUAL percentage of deaths was 2.5%

Sticks, stop being so melodramatic. Mich was bang on when she said we are way more advanced and prepared than those in 1918! People around the world die of the flu all the time, but that's never thrown onto the front of newspapers because writing about a dangerous pandemic is far more exciting for journalists. You're just eating up everything they're feeding you.

I'm probably going to get shot down for this.

But I don't think it's as bad as people are making out.
As long as you get it sorted as soon as & there is a treatment it's not like in uncurable then it should be fine!
