You can buy them from some shops near religious shrines in Iran, because they are worn by mollahs (if you want a very basic description of what is a mollah, I would say equivalent of a mollah in christianity is a priest). so it is considered as religous clothes in many muslim countries. I imagine he probably bought it cause they are comfortable.
