ab·bre·vi·a·tion (-brv-shn)
n.
1. The act or product of shortening.
2. A shortened form of a word or phrase used chiefly in writing to represent the complete form

WHICH IS COMMONLY USED ON THE INTERNET. We only communicate through text anyway, so it's not as if members are literally screaming these abbreviations in your face. Which would, obviously, be 'eye gauging' material.

If you have a problem with ILY, IKR....then maybe we should ban every other one like LOL, LMAO, PMSL etc they're ALL the same.

No one on here, apart from a few people, has perfect English on here anyway so accusing others of writing something which is annoying is the most hypocritical thing I've witnessed on here. I'm not mentioning names.

ILY x

I actually completely agree with you. Some of the people who object to the abbreviations can't spell for ****.

If we are going to crack down on abbreviations, then I'm going to unleash the inner spelling nazi, and go postal on all of their asses.

Plus we use abbreviations in everyday English anyway, "OK" for example, which is widely accepted as an actual word now.

Like someone said, the only one I can understand a problem with is "ohai", which is a random abbreviation, but I personally don't see problem with people using it.

Then again I guess I can see why people get annoyed, because I personally don't like completely text-speech sentences such as "hi how r u? im gud 2 thx" - but that can be supported by the same argument.

I love ohai, because it originated in the lolcats site, which I love.

"ohai" is ****ing HORRIBLE!

I associate that word with the scene kids trying to be cool. Hate it.

Nobody says it in reference to lolcats any more though. It's used in every day chitchat. It just irritates me.

Yeh I totally agree, abbreviations are fine for me, but too much can be annoying. And when over used can be annoying, such as when people are using them for the sake of using them and fitting a trend.

If you are genuinely shorting down a sentence then I see no problem, as long every other few words aren't abbreviated

Everyone on here is hypocritical...

laugh out loud < just to join in.

Nicky.

Haha!

I think if the person wants to use it, then fine. Just don't read it!

But if we all started going around saying 'laugh out loud', 'laughing my *****g arse off' and saying Hello and Goodbye at every possible occasion, it would drive us all insane!

XD

I wouldn't mind them if they weren't overused.

They have lost their meaning because of the amount of times it's posted.

And Ohai, although it used to be classic on Lolcats, has been butchered.
