The Hills had an average of only 3 million viewers per epsiode in america

That's in a country of 300 million people. So 1% was watching it. How can Speidi be big names there when 99% didn't watch their show?

They are more known for what they have done after. Heidi was one of the most spoke about celebs and shared the same amount of attention as Britney was getting during her breakdown.

They're not A-list celebrities by any means, I don't think anybody tried to pass them off as that. But they're big in pop culture, and plus the Hills aired on MTV so naturally the ratings are going to be lower since it's on a cable channel.

daniel-lewis-1985 07-01-2013 11:29 PM

Thats big for MTV

Saph 07-01-2013 11:33 PM

They're like the Katie and Peter of America (but more hated)

lets face it did 3 million people watch Katie and Peter the next chapter? No but everyone knows who they are.

wendywillow 07-01-2013 11:37 PM

definately more infamous than famous, kind of like a cut rate kardashian

emmetmcl 08-01-2013 12:13 AM

Yeah, but the likes of LOST got 20 million at its peak, which would be fúcl< all too

iRyan 08-01-2013 05:01 AM

You don't understand how it works.

The US has hundreds of major television networks, so there is much, much, much more competition than in the UK. 3 million is alot for a US tv show, especially one on MTV.

american idol is the highest rated show on tv, avg 19 million viewers, but i guess its not as popular cause its only 6% of the population, so 94% didnt watch it. Theres no way that show has succes.

Enterainment news and Tabloids. The 3 million people who did watch are the same type that would watch BB and Jersey Shore, the 18-25 year old who will spend their money voting. Also they milked the little celebrity status they gained through MTV by being involved in night club promotions and the like, again much like Jersey Shore and "the Sitch" who were on last season. The diffence being is they are old news ( 5 years ago )now while Jersey Shore was still being aired when Mike was on CBB last summer.

who are the 3 million weirdos is what i want to know. to watch a fake scripted reality show

vikram84 08-01-2013 12:50 PM

Geeez do some research!!! Why don't you compare 3 million to what another show gets rather than the population lol like X factor having 8 million viewers!!!

Scripted or not The Hills was entertaining.

Everyone knew it was scripted anyway it was like a soap opera.

I think my first post might have been a bit misleading. I didn't really mean that only 1% had seen the Hills at all. I meant that 1% watch any given episode. Some people watch some episodes of programmes.

It depends on the programme too. Shows like american idol probably have a more fluctuating viewership meaning that even though around 15 million tune in per episode, probably far more have seen some episodes. I'm willing to bet that at least one third of americans have seen at least 10 episodes of american idol since the programmes inception. Could be higher

MTV in Canada and the US posted all episodes of the Hills on line. In Canada, they also had their own aftershow where many of the cast came on or participated in phone interviews. I don't know what it compares to in Britian, but among the young and dumb it was quite popular
Also, Pratt comes from money, and in the States, money is Royalty. Like the kardashian sisters, in the US some people are famous because they can buy fame

People who fame usually buy more hate than fame.

Wasn't a fan of The Hills in the slightest, but I can confirm that for girls, say 12-22, it was a MASSIVE show, here in Canada.

wendywillow 08-01-2013 04:49 PM

yeah and it was an offshoot from laguna hills which they were on as well which kind of started the 'scripted reality' thing so they were defintaely well known at the time

I don't disagree with you, but for some of these socialites, the hate and controversy does not affect their pocket books in a negative way. It keeps them in the limelight and they still get paid to be in the limelight.

I personally don't buy into it, I'm just stating it how it is.
