As much as End of The Line was good, I think they should have used the budget on a massive week of episodes where both Carmel and Mercedes left together but neither were killed off.

Good thinking! It doesn't say anything else apart from Freddie murdering someone because they threaten to reveal all about his and Lindsey's affair, and Mercedes knows about it so perhaps we're led to believe she's been murdered until the ending scene of an episode when she walks through an airport or is on a plane, ala Clare and Myra.
