You're right there are many Muriels out there, which is also why i love the film, it makes me feel like i'm not alone.

You could say i were Muriel, i know i was selfish, (and i hate to admit this) i stole, and i lied, but i came from a house where there were no love, no money, all my friends had a better life than me, my dad was an arsehole, and my mum the down trodden wife who went on to commit suicide. The fact that i weren't close to any of my siblings, in fact we pretty much hated each other, but that's all we knew.
I escaped my family by running off with my boyfriend, trying to find out who i were, where i belonged, and through his and his familys love and plus my moral compass grew stronger once i'd left home, so i can totally relate to Muriel and all her flaws:)

And i'm glad we are fellow over thinkers:laugh:

Aww... Ruby

I get it... I really do

...awww Ruby....yeah I really do see it as quite a dark movie and not a 'chick flick' type thing..although there are aspects of that as well obviously but it's intrinsically a very sad movie..(with a satisfying ending..)...

..what your friends had ..(in your eyes because it may not have been so in reality..)...was love and acceptance and what you feel that you stole, was that and noting to do with money at all..and your 'lies' were not lies but more, dreams and wishes...I believe that your 'moral compass' was always strong rather than grew strong and I doubt that you have a selfish part in your body..we are what our environment makes us and all of us victims of that...and our 'flaws'..your flaws..?...they are what makes us and you beautiful because it's not that we have them, it's that we learn the strengths they give us..'perfection' would b a completely disabling thing to be......

Muriel's Wedding thoughts:

Spoiler:

I think sleeping on this film (and reading the other reviews in this thread) has allowed me to appreciate it a lot more for what it is. I still enjoyed it beforehand but I feel that because I was expecting something completely different (a romance/chick-flick type of film) it was a bit strange to watch. I never would have guessed it to be so hard-hitting, but I do love deep and meaningful films the best so I loved it in that regard.

The cast was great. I agree with whoever said that Toni Collette is the only viable actress to portray Muriel. She was perfect for the part and emobied the character so well that you forget she's a fairly well-known actress outside of her role. I also loved the actress who played Rhonda. They made such a good double act. Everyone did so well in making the story so convincing and moving.

The story itself was emotional. I agreed with Ruby to begin with in the respect that I found Muriel to be quite selfish when it came to taking the money her Mother gave her, and I didn't like the scene where she finally got married but didn't even notice her Mother whilst walking out the church. That was especially sad considering her Mother's fate at the end of the film. Hearing everybody's explanation has made me realise that her reaction to it all was actually quite natural, since Muriel was never really respected (especially by her Father) by most people so why would she respect them. She finally had the opportunity to prove herself, and it was the correct decision because she would never have met Rhonda and probably would've came back and took the grief of her father if she hadn't (imo).

Muriel's transformation was one I relate with to; coming from a small town and having bigger hopes and dreams that are maybe out of my league but wanting to pursue them regardless, and I think everyone has had an identity crissi similar to Muriel once in their life (It's Mariel not Muriel, so simple yet effective). On an unrelated note, I found the sex scene absolutely hilarious and it was one of my favourite parts of the film. Her Sister was also an excellent part of the story. I loved her saying "you're terrible, Muriel." and have kept saying it again and again this morning :p

I did feel that the pace of the film was a little haphazard and it felt like random things were happening at random times (meeting with her Dad although she never wanted to, getting married to the South African swimmer who didn't like her but then suddenly did?). It was quite confusing at times, and why did her relationship with that other guy randomly stop and come to no real conclusion? However, I do feel that this film would be even better on a re-watch, and I think that's why so many people in this thread adore this film because it's one that you can watch over and over again and come to value it more and more.

The best part of the film for me was the general ABBA theme. I adored listening to the songs (I'm a big fan!) and how they applied to Muriel's life. The scene with Muriel and Rhonda was excellent, and I love that it ended with them two driving away from Porpoise Spit with Dancing Queen playing in the background. It was very poetic.

I'm stucking between giving this film a very high 6 or a low 7, but I think I'm going to give it a 7/10 because it is a very well-respected film and there were fantastic moments throughout with lovely message.

..I think that's the thing with this, it's often that movie clubs don't last too long so the best way is for us all to feel as though we don't have to watch every movie but can just dip in and out any time...

..Forrest Gump.....

Spoiler:

..I'll straight off give this a perfect 10/10 and thank you Braden.....it's funny how you can forget so many of the details with movies that all add to their perfection...him being the inspiration for Elvis' pelvic moves....for John Lennon's, Imagine...for the smiley, have a nice day slogan...and how charmed his life was, investing a bit in some fruit company'....one of the best lines in the movie for me was 'so I was invited to the White House again and I went again'...there were so many moments in this when I felt emotional../cried and equally as many that made me smile...obviously there are dark sides to his story with Jenny's abuse as a child, how that led to her never feeling any self worth and the Vietnam War...but through the eyes of Forrest Gump, there were always uplifting elements...as well as Tom Hanks, a great cast with Robin Wright and Gary Sinise especially ..and also Sally Fields is amazing as always...well everything about it is perfect, the soundtrack..the trip through history and the perfect Forrest Gump and his perfect heart....so yes, a perfect 10/10...

rubymoo 03-06-2016 08:07 AM

Niamh. 03-06-2016 09:19 AM

Forrest Gump

Spoiler:

Love this film, love Tom Hanks, it's such a great story, i love the way they tie in so many major events in there and stick Forrest right in the middle of everything.

This film is pretty flawless for me, I don't have anything at all negative to say about it, it's the perfect mix of funny, sad and very very sweet

9.5/10
