They probably did more damage to the environment than their mealy-mouthed "promises" would heal.

And as for them patting themselves on the back for phasing out coal burning ... It's absolutely pointless when they're burning trees instead. No-one should buy the the claim that it's renewable energy "because trees grow", as it takes decades for the little twigs they plant to match the carbon capture of the mature trees they destroy.

They need to admit that the best way forward is nuclear. It may not be perfect, but it's greener than the other options.
