SNP leader
at his conference

Talking to Victoria

He wants a New Policy
Referendum,
After a General Election?

[Humza Yousaf will attempt to “draw a line”
under the SNP’s independence policy at
this weekend’s party conference after a
failure to address concerns over the
cost of living crisis was blamed for its defeat
in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West byelection.

The conference opens on Sunday with a crucial debate
on Yousaf’s proposals to seek a mandate
at the next general election to open
independence negotiations with Westminster,
which has already attracted widespread
criticism from senior party figures.

Speakers scheduled to appear at a pro-Palestinian event at the SNP conference
blamed Israel for Hamas terrorism and described last weekend’s attacks as a
“dream coming true”.

The party’s leadership was urged to block the appearance of the two guests on
an “expert panel” for a fringe event, organised by the SNP Friends of Palestine
group, over the “deeply inflammatory” remarks.

SNP rejects using next election as 'de facto' referendum on independence

The SNP will not use the next general election as a de facto independence referendum, in a shift away from the strategy employed by Nicola Sturgeon.

Humza Yousaf, the SNP's current leader and the first minister of Scotland, backed the switch away from his predecessor's position.

He said using the next general election as a de facto referendum for independence is the "wrong approach" to take.

So when they had the semblance of credibility, the elections were a de-facto referendum. Not they haven't, they aren't.

Coincidence, I'm sure.

I struggle to name anything tangible that the SNP have delivered in recent years, I think it's time they go. I don't know who I'd vote to replace them but they've just settled into this fairly meaningless centre ground where Nicola Sturgeon's main accomplishment and purpose was to deliver zippy zingers about Westminster politicians, which was entertaining but she could do that on a late night comedy panel show. Humza Yousaf... has inherited the leadership and there's no platform to speak of. I'd be stunned if they are re-elected.

I think you can assume that anyone who votes SNP is vaguely pro-independence... however, the inverse isn't true - you can't assume that everyone who is pro-independence will vote SNP. And for various reasons (not in any way related to the independence debate) the number of pro-indy Scots who can stomach voting SNP is reducing.

This stance from them... just proves that they know it.

I'm still more or less pro-indy (although I think it now matters less than it did - we missed the boat timings wise) however I find it very difficult to mark the SNP box these days.

bots 31-10-2023 11:26 AM

What they really need to do is move independence away from politics to gain traction, but of course, that's just not possible

At least away from party-politics, but as you say it's impossible. It's too tied up with espatblished politics, class, royalty, sectarianism... all sorts of complex things outside of all it should be about (economic viability/prosperity).
