Right, so i don't want to come across as too harsh, but i want to hear y'alls opinion too.

Two teams so far have come up with an answer for a question which is wrong. If they had seen either film (the correct one or the incorrect one) obviously they would know this; and when you reverse search the image the "answer" which comes up is the incorrect answer, which leads me to believe that the team members who provided the answers have been reverse searching images (potentially for the whole game)

I made it pretty clear that reverse image searching the images isn't in the spirit of the game and in previous pub quizzes (which im pretty sure everyone who is playing has previously played) Shaun put it pretty well with,,,

I do ask that everyone refrains from cheating. Google has come a hell of a long way since the very first Pub Quiz on here back in 2011. For example, Image Search wasn't a thing. But Greg and Ben can attest (or at least they could if they were still with us) that running this thing is a total nightmare. Finding images in videos that have never been screenshot before, and are therefore un-google-able, is near impossible, and a long process. In a way, this is my least favourite game to run as a result. I don't do begging but I will go as close to it as I can in asking you all not to use things like Google Image Search, Shazam, posting my questions on other forums for help... because:

1) It is a waste of my time
2) It is a hollow victory
3) If I catch you doing it I'll out you and make your future time on this forum a living hell
and 4) I'll hate you and probably campaign for you to be banned. I am a really ****ing nasty person if you cross me and I cannot stress how angry this game makes me when it's being sabotaged.

It takes probably a solid fortnight of preparation for this and I ask that you respect that and just play the game with fairness. I'm not saying "DO NOT USE GOOGLE" because of course you're going to see some pictures and think, "hmm, that actress looks familiar, is it [Sarah Michelle Gellar]?" and then have a look at Wikipedia for a list of films/TV shows she's been in to see if they look like my screenshots. And that is perfectly fine, it's what the quiz is all about: educated research (or indeed guesses

Im not going to currently reveal names or which question it is, but i'd like to hear people's opinion on it before I make a harsh decision such as halving points for the round or previous rounds.

Smithy 21-09-2020 10:22 PM

Also as ammi has done, if you havent already, please post the three numbers you wish to have clues for and ill post them in your subforum

Also i will just say as well, on a personal note, that after spending ages trying to find ungoogelable images (and making a point of that numerous times in the thread) AND trying to run this whilst moving AND starting a new job, its just really disappointing and frankly quite disrespectful cause you're just wasting my time

The Slim Reaper 21-09-2020 10:34 PM

Ban them. Unless it's us.

I just assumed that they wouldn't be reverse engine searchable so didn't bother, but I also see why that's the first thing people would do. Seems a bit of a grey area.

Babayaro. 21-09-2020 11:16 PM

I bet it's that stinking french slut Marsh

Shaun 22-09-2020 12:21 AM

Hmm... I'd see if you can get James to remove these players frkm their teams and let the other players continue, rather than ban the team outright

this seems fair if its 100% that certain people have been cheating. Smithy will know which individuals it is by who answered the particular question.

Ammi 22-09-2020 04:42 AM

...thank you for the clues, Smithy.....

Ammi 22-09-2020 04:50 AM

...I don’t know really what to suggest, Smithy...so the same incorrect answer that has been given by two teams...?...it isn’t in any way a film that, that conclusion could have been reached by each individually..?..Like a really similar scene or some such thing/same actor(s) or characters wearing similar things...you’ve re-tried searching the image and it does actually come up, so you’re pretty sure..?...

Yeah I’ve reversed searched all the images before I uploaded them and I know which ones give incorrect results.

The image in question if people actually bothered to look at what it is rather than reverse searching they’d probably clock that their answer is wrong but they haven’t and they’ve just gone with google.

AnnieK 22-09-2020 06:53 AM

I think you need to speak to those people you think are involved Smithy. It may be harsh to penalise whole teams but I can see how frustrating it is for you. There could be some explanation though and I think people have a right to be able to give a defence if you believe they have cheated.

Strictly Jake 22-09-2020 07:00 AM

I dont know if someone has cheated on my team or not. I know for a fact I havent cheated though as you will be able to see in the chat threads smithy. I havent known that many answers so I either have guessed or have known the film. For example I only knew like 5 ot 6 from this round

Strictly Jake 22-09-2020 07:00 AM

I think it would be harsh to punish a whole team when some of us have played fairly and wouldnt know if anyone had cheated or not

At this point I’ve given around 3 answers the whole game :joker: so quite truthfully if I was cheating, I’m doing it bloody wrong :joker:

I hope you can get to the bottom of it Smithy :)

Ammi 22-09-2020 07:07 AM

...it’s just hard to imagine anyone actually, deliberately ‘cheating’, so it’s thinking if there could be an explanation for two teams having it incorrect, which would make sense...but I agree with Annie, completely...speak to those people who gave those answers, so that they can explain..?...rather than assume something more negative...

Barry. 22-09-2020 08:20 AM

I don’t think my phone can reverse google images lol. I say ban them (not the whole team just the cheater).

Rob! 22-09-2020 08:25 AM

I didn’t even know you could do that :skull:

I think my team will attest I haven’t been anywhere near helpful enough to be cheating.

Rob! 22-09-2020 08:26 AM

“I can be a really nasty person”

Ooh not Shaun’s BB audition exposed?

Barry. 22-09-2020 11:16 AM

Could we please have 20, 10 and 31 please for clues?

Cherie 22-09-2020 11:32 AM

The people doing it (if they are doing it) it might just be coincidence, it is not in the OP and no one trawls through pages of guff for the rules.

Maybe give the benefit of the doubt but now everyone knows.

The Slim Reaper 22-09-2020 11:33 AM

Nice of Cherie to own up.

Calderyon 22-09-2020 11:35 AM

So:

I have been on my tablet and I used the "Search Google for this image" -option on the pictures. I have come to realize that it is apparently the Google reverse image search as a standard/default image search in tablet/mobile devices (or just Android devices?) which I somehow did not realize/know and just went with it cause it gave me such good results and was so easy to do. I don't think it's a standard on non-mobile devices such as PC, right?

I have come to realize it is illegal and wrong and I will accept the consequences and I apologise to everyone for the convenience. It was an honest mistake(s).

Sorry.

Calderyon 22-09-2020 11:53 AM

Reason I have been in my tablet is that I have been remote for the last 17 days.

Calderyon 22-09-2020 11:54 AM

Also if it is anyway possible, I would still like to continue, but i understand if it is not possible.

If it helps Cald out, most of his guesses/results have been wrong.

The Slim Reaper 22-09-2020 12:19 PM

Honestly, I think the fairest thing to do would be to just issue a final general warning to all teams, as it seems the issue is one of confusion rather than malice or intent.

Shaun 22-09-2020 12:49 PM

I'd have thought it was common knowledge that the reason it takes so long to put this game together is to try and minimalise the utility of google-reverse-searching. It's not like this is a new or unexplained rule...

I can see why some teams do it - hell it might even have been a rule I put in place against myself, because back in the first pub quiz Matt (the BBSpy Matt) was on our team and opened my eyes to the world of quiz hacks :joker: - because it can be something to try and get Google to lead you down the right path like giving you the actress' name, or pointing out a costume, but it also puts you at risk of just getting the answer immediately and that isn't fair. The whole point of the quiz is to use your own initiative and look at an image that's stumping you and try to scour it for clues. "Is that [actor's name]? Let's look at their filmography". "That looks like a volcano erupting, let's google films about volcanoes". "There can't be many music videos with men on tricycles... let's google" etc. Just putting in the exact image and asking Google to do all the work is silly and counter-productive to what a quiz should be.

I get this, and I also understand why you would perhaps take it more personally, having done the work involved in creating and running these things, but ultimately we're playing a quiz with 5 teams and we're 3 rounds in.

If we finished last place because everyone google-imaged every clue in every round I'd be ok with that, because it's actually been a break from the mundane run of the mill forum, and I've enjoyed the distraction of playing the game with my teammates, more than I'm bothered by where we place.

Again. really not trying to downplay or undercut smithy and the work involved in these things, but everyone knows where they are now, and I think it would be a shame to either kick teams out or remove members at this stage.
