Coronation Street actor Rob James-Collier has quit after just under two years with the ITV soap over fears of being "typecast".

The 31-year-old, who has played Weatherfield's Liam Connor since 2006, reportedly revealed his intention to leave only days before filming his on-screen wedding to Maria Sutherland (Samia Smith).

A source at the soap told the News of the World: "Nobody was expecting this and it's bad news because Liam has become hugely popular with fans. He won 'Sexiest Male' at the British Soap Awards and they had big things planned for him.

"They wanted the Carla-Liam-Maria thing to really step up in pace, with him finally cheating on his girl with his sister-in-law. It would have given them a brilliant storyline which could have bubbled away until Christmas."

They added: "He says that he doesn't want to be typecast."

A spokeswoman confirmed to DS this morning: "We've known for some time that Rob would be leaving at the end of his current contract. It's given the writers time to pen a really good exit storyline for his character, Liam.

"Rob will remain filming with us until around October and he will bow out on screen at the end of the year."

At around the same time last year, Sean Gallagher, who played Rob's on-screen brother Paul Connor, announced his decision to quit the soap after only five months in the role.

Rob will become part of the growing list of characters to leave the soap. The last few months have seen the departures of Liz Dawn (Vera Duckworth), Tina O'Brien (Sarah Louise Platt), Wendi Peters (Cilla Battersby-Brown), Bruce Jones (Les Battersby), Samantha Seager (Jodie Morton) and Zaraah Abrahams (Joanne Jackson).

Julie Hesmondhalgh (Hayley Cropper) has taken a 12-month extended break from the soap but will return at the end of this year, while Julia Haworth (Clare Peacock) is due to go on maternity leave, with her baby due in July.

This month also sees the departure of on and off-screen lovers Rupert Hill (Jamie Baldwin) and Jenny Platt (Violet Wilson).

Bradley Walsh - who played former Underworld boss Danny Baldwin - is still due to return to the Cobbles at some point this year, although nothing has been confirmed.

Coronation Street's Sean Tully apparently suffers a broken heart when he receives a letter to tell him he will never see his baby son again.

The goodbye note from Violet Wilson describes how she and her boyfriend Jamie Baldwin are taking baby Dylan away for a new start in London, according to the Daily Star.

A devastated Sean, who donated his sperm to Violet, apparently weeps as he reads: "I'm sorry we've done it this way, but we didn't know what else to do. All we want is to bring up our baby together like every other family. We wish we could stay, but everyone knows you are Dylan's dad and they'll never let us forget it. I'm sorry."

Rushing out to stop them leaving, Sean - played by Antony Cotton -arrives just in time to see his beloved Dylan in the back as the car drives off into the distance.

He calls Violet's phone again and again, but she rejects it each time and eventually jettisons the phone and heads off to London.

Sean pines for his son, telling his gay lover Marcus: "I've nothing left of my little lad - absolutely nothing."

Violet and Jamie are played by real-life lovers Jenny Platt and Rupert Hill - and are also apparently moving to London to pursue their careers.

Scarlett. 03-02-2008 02:54 PM

Aye, I mean Liam was pretty much a cheaper version of the Daniel Baldwin

BigSister 03-02-2008 03:01 PM

aww no poor sean
but at least liam is going to still be around til the end of the year so long enough to keep it going plus a year might be long enough dont want to drag it out any further

Scarlett. 03-02-2008 03:06 PM

I think it will be a big storyline since Liam has been pretty much the face of Corrie since 2006

BigSister 03-02-2008 03:11 PM

hope he doesnt die though *looks worried*

Scarlett. 03-02-2008 03:13 PM

He might do actually  although if he does it has to be in a factory fire :thumbs2:

Scarlett. 03-02-2008 04:57 PM

Lol poor Jack always getting hit over the head (Farewell Vera is on)

BigSister 03-02-2008 05:08 PM

maybe the factory blows up and a few go at the same time

Scarlett. 03-02-2008 05:10 PM

Aye, maybe if a gas canister exploded at the garage the PO could be involved

Matt08 03-02-2008 08:44 PM

I would like Liam to leave the steet alive, which would mean he could return at a later date.

GRIEVING Jack Duckworth will have his broken heart mended – as he turns into an OAP romeo.

The Corrie legend, played by Bill Tarmey, was left grief-stricken by the death of his missus Vera last month.

Our Street source said: “Everyone is feeling desperately sorry for Jack but there are brighter skies ahead for him.

“The script writers are planning to introduce a couple of female characters into his life.”

One of the new faces will be at least TEN YEARS younger than Jack, who is in his sixties.

But, amusingly, some of Corrie’s current blue-rinse brigade will also try to win his affection, and fellow show veterans Rita Sullivan and Audrey Roberts will be in the queue.

The insider added: “The loss of Vera opens up all manner of strong storylines for Jack. There is a lot of scope for things he never would have dared get away with before.

“Bill will drop regularly in and out of the show and Jack’s turbulent life will allow just for that.”

Liz Dawn, 68, quit after 30 years as Vera to spend time with her family as she battles emphysema.

Docs told her she would have been dead by now if she had not quit smoking five years ago.

Straight after Corrie tonight at 8pm, Liz reveals the effects of the disease in an interview with Sir Trevor McDonald on ITV1’s Tonight.

BigSister 04-02-2008 10:08 AM

im not so sure about this storyline with jack so soon after veras death maybe six months or so after it but not like a month it doesnt seem right

Scarlett. 04-02-2008 04:55 PM

Aye, I agree, maybe he just has them as lady freinds but the ladys have designs on him, those storylines would be fun with them all ralling around trying to impress him
