Germany narrowly escapes recession

Germany narrowly escaped slipping into recession at the end of 2018 but growth stagnated in the fourth quarter as its economy struggles to cope with a global industrial slump.

Germany's growth flatlined after contracting 0.2pc in the third quarter of 2018 with higher government spending and rising investment helping its economy avoid a technical recession. Despite the downgrade to German growth, Eurostat left its fourth quarter growth estimate for the eurozone unchanged at 0.2pc.

Early indicators in 2019 have suggested that Europe's engine room has struggled to bounce back from last year's soft second half. Survey data indicates that Germany's embattled manufacturing sector saw growth slow further in January.

Germany is highly exposed to export demand and has suffered as the world economy starts to slow and the trade war drags down Chinese growth.

No! It's actually better that not a single penny of our £350m goes to the NHS, it's better that it all goes to your unelected masters in Brussels.

Now that's sarcasm
