The UK's ambassador to Ukraine has backed a potential visit to capital Kyiv by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, if security issues can be managed.

Melinda Simmons told Radio 4's Woman's Hour, the PM had done a "brilliant job" in showing solidarity with Ukraine, particularly in his conversations with President Zelensky.

"Any engagement is important to help bolster that extraordinary morale that the president has been showing by rallying the country and staying, himself, in the capital," said Simmons.

bots 21-03-2022 07:34 PM

The staunchly pro-Kremlin newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda (KP) published an article quoting the ministry as saying 9,861 Russian servicemen had died, a figure which exceeds even US intelligence estimates of Russian fatalities.

It gave the number of wounded as 16,153.

Minutes later, this part of the article disappeared from the page, but we were able to take screen grabs of the relevant paragraphs.

KP editor Vladimir Sungorkin subsequently told the BBC the information had been the result of a hack, and said the paper will post an explanation later.

The UK and US have an extensive history of playing "world police" and it's never ended well. Least of all for the countries we've supposedly been "helping"... who have we helped? Nothing left but rubble and dust.

It's a risk I think must be taken for the sake of our Ukrainian brethren

We build those places back up..look at mainland Europe after world war 2...we got involved, we took our medicine during it, and we also helped build those countries back up....we do nothing now, we could be looking at the exact same scenario.

how exactly could we help though. How are we going to get troops in there safely for example. If we want to stop russian missile strikes, we would have to take out their launchers in russia, cause thats where the big ones are launched from. Don't you see how quickly it all escalates.

Also, ukranians have home advantage, they know the terrain. Western troops wouldnt have that knowledge, and they are certainly not going to get into street fighting which is where this is all heading

WW2 was not a "world police" scenario, neither the UK nor the US got involved until there was a political mandate to do so. We can rewrite history and pretend that it was all good-heartedness and out of a desire to save innocents but it wasn't; the UK had a military pact with Poland, the Nazis invaded Poland, that pact was activated and Britain declared war. The US didn't get involved until they were attacked directly.

The UK and US won't go to war with Russia unless/until a NATO country or other country we have an alliance with is attacked. Nor should they. Ukraine is not one of those countries. Politically, it's that simple.

Is this the uk and us being world police though? Or would it be them acting on russias attempts at policing the world.
