From inside the Murdoch hearing

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-14200683

Nick Robinson :

Quote:

Update, 14:44: Rupert Murdoch looks frail. His wife Wendi helped him to sit, poured water for him and whispered words of advice or comfort before the hearing began.

Denied the opportunity to make an opening statement Rupert nevertheless interrupted his son's first answer to say "this is the most humble day of my life".

It is hard to equate the man sitting a few feet away from me with the global media mogul feared by political leaders throughout my adult lifetime.

Update, 15:20: As the once great media mogul paused, halted and blinked his way through the persistent, calm and courteous questioning by the MP Tom Watson he said little but revealed a huge amount. He was, apparently, ignorant of almost everything that had happened in his company.

His son looked on with concern etched on his face and tried again and again to come to his aid. Watson stopped him by pointing out that Murdoch Senior was responsible for the corporate governance of News Corp and, therefore, his inability to answer without assistance mattered.

At one point his wife, Wendi - who is sitting just behind him - reached out to tell her husband to stop banging the table with the palm of his hand. The advisers next to her started to mutter anxiously to each other.

It would all have reminded me of the moment the curtain was pulled back on the Wizard of Oz if it had not been for the revelation of the key Murdoch Senior defence.

Asked whether he accepted that he was responsible for what had gone wrong, he answered simply "No". Asked to explain who was then, he replied "the people I trusted to run the company and the people they trusted". The irony was that he was sitting next to one of them.

1654:

The sitting is suspended for 10 minutes - after some kind of disturbance.

1655:

Rupert Murdoch appears to have been attacked by somebody in the public gallery.

1656:

Rupert Murdoch's wife Wendi stood up and appeared to strike somebody in defence of her husband.

1657:

A man with white substance - possibly paint - on his face has been taken away by police following the incident.

1659:

BBC political editor Nick Robinson says Rupert Murdoch was apparently hit in the face with a plate of shaving foam by a man shouting: "Greedy."

arista 19-07-2011 04:02 PM

The session is restarted after 15 minutes. Tory MP Louise Mensch continues her questioning.

joeysteele 19-07-2011 04:12 PM

We were never going to learn a lot really, I feel they are being evasive but within the rights of being so in light of there being a Police investigation.

Quite frankly it seems to me on this showing that it's time Rupert set off for the golf course and left business to others,he seems way out of touch totally.

What a foolish guy to rush forward like that to attack him at the proceedings though,at least he wasn't a student so they cannot get blamed for that one.

(As a footnote,I am watching with a Female student friend who has little interest in the proceedings at all but who has it seems fallen for James Murdoch, how sad.)

1754:

Tom Watson asks how extensively she worked with private investigators as editor of the Sun and NoW. Mrs Brooks says "not at all" on the Sun - she says in the late 90s private eyes were used by Fleet Street - but that was later reviewed. She adds: "The NoW employed PIs like most newspapers in Fleet Street"

Rupert Murdoch was attacked by a Punk Protester
who broke into the parliamentary
select committee this afternoon
as the Murdochs were giving evidence
into the phone-hacking scandal.
Murdoch was hit with what appeared
to be shaving
foam by the assailant, comedian Jonnie Marbles.

"He is one of the founding members
of UK Uncut.
Within minutes seven Jonnie Marbles groups had
already appeared on Facebook.
His girlfriend @pageantmalarkey wrote on Twitter:
'Not funny. Not clever. Not your girlfriend.' "

Mrs Brooks
has Concluded.

But since she is Sacked
who cares?

joeysteele 19-07-2011 06:35 PM

Hers was a poor interview session, I felt she used the legal restraints to the full ,her near constant sorry's as to not hearing questions giving her time to think her answers.

Nice to see she said they could have her back after all legal restraints were over, somehow I doubt she will be back for some reason.

Murdoch and Murdoch Jr looked like Montgomery Burns and Smithers, I thought.

Rupert Murdoch will get away with this because he's an old man. People forget so easily.

US President Harry Truman had a sign on his desk that said "the buck stops here". Every CEO in the world should have one too.
