Well, the moon is in the water
And I'm dancing with the current and my clothes
Are on the beach
You stay with the earth
'Cause you don't understand why I would wanna freeze
The irony

I think it's intentional - she's said the album is split I to three parts and three "colours". First four songs are blue relating to her depression, middle section is yellow relating to physical and mental sickness and the final art is grey relating to loss, which is pretty cathartic I guess?

That being said I kinda think synesthesia in music is soooo overdone so I wasn't really too excited bout this album going in and even though her lyrics definitely reflect the colours and emotions associated I don't feel the music necessarily does.

That's pretty much my only personal criticism of the album lol I actually really like it!

Some killer songs on there though. Circle the drain is an obvious banger but bloodstream, up the walls, yellow is the colour of her eyes and stains are all noteworthy too. Love the subtle production such as the bubbly sounds in circle the drain.

I give it an 8.1 just to be awkward.

I will get around to this tomorrow.

Shaun 15-07-2020 12:51 PM

If anyone has any suggestions for this week's, feel free to submit any. I'll take any from someone that isn't Samm, Scott or I since we've suggested the last 3 albums.

Albums being released this Friday:
- Ellie Goulding - "Brightest Blue"
- Surfer Blood - "Carefree Theatre"
- The Pretenders - "Hate for Sale"

are the only 3 I've heard of so I'd imagine this (and next week) will be a revisiting early 2020 week :spin2: I don't mind if it's a big name, I'd just rather not burn through all of them at once and be stuck in October with The Flaming Lips.

Ammi 15-07-2020 12:56 PM

..did Tame Impala have a new album..?...would that be a good one..?...

Shaun 15-07-2020 01:03 PM

yeah off the top of my head there've been major 2020 releases from:

- Dua Lipa
- Grimes
- Chloe x Halle
- Tame Impala
- Charli XCX
- Kesha
- La Roux
- The Strokes
- Allie X
- Christine and the Queens' EP
- Megan thee Stallion
- Purity Ring
- Georgia
- Halsey
- Carly Rae Jepsen
- Selena Gomez
- Justin Bieber
- Eminem
- BTS
- Childish Gambino
- Hayley Williams
- Rina Sawayama
- Kehlani
- Kygo
- Perfume Genius
- Moses Sumney
- Future
- Run the Jewels
- Bob Dylan
- Blossoms

(by major here I mean "someone on TiBB might care"... I am under no illusions that the world stops turning with a new La Roux album)

And in the near future we'll have new releases from Disclosure, The Killers, Alanis Morissette, Fontaines DC, Washed Out, Katy Perry, Lana Del Rey, HURTS, Doves and Sufjan Stevens. And I'm sure that's just the tip of the iceberg, so there's definitely a variety to select from and keep the game running. If you want to endorse Tame Impala, I am more than happy to go ahead with them (especially since I've already listened and have an opinion/score ready :p)

Ammi 15-07-2020 03:09 PM

....eeeeeek, I’d rather someone else chooses or endorses because I’ve just started to follow the thread and am enjoying listening to complete albums for the first time in ages.../..no pressure when others choose....it sounds as though there are lots of great artists to choose from though, I didn’t realise 2020 had been such a filled year...

Why could you not contribute regardless?

tbh! :hmph:

I'll do Tame Impala since it was the first (tentative) suggestion someone came up with. Grimes can be next week, and then La Roux the week after.

Half a day left to submit scores for Soccer Mommy

Ammi 16-07-2020 12:33 PM

......I’ll start listening to the tracks later...

I haven’t listened to The Slow Rush in full yet but from what I heard months ago, I.. wasn’t exactly impressed. Maybe it’ll change after a few listens (which I hope, because Currents was fantastic).

Tom4784 16-07-2020 03:01 PM

I thought Colour Theory was a good album although it kind of passed me by listening to it, I wasn't bored or wanting to skip anything but it also didn't leave much of an impression on me either. I kinda felt like the album lacked peaks and valleys, it felt a bit repetitive throughout and I think the artist herself is quite indistinct, I've heard so many albums that sound like this one. It's a competent album but one that didn't really have much impact on me.

6/10

Same :ninja2:

I liked about 3 or 4 tracks and i did listen multiple times

Currents was AMAZING but the slow rush was lowkey garbage

We’re not counting this towards the final score

Colour Theory Review

For the most part, I enjoyed Colour Theory and when it shines, it really shines. I do feel that it kinda merges together at parts and the album definitely feels longer than 10 tracks (I don’t think that the length of “yellow is the colour of her eyes” helps, but it’s a glorious song so who’s complaining). I didn’t dislike any of it, but I probably wouldn’t miss “night swimming”, “up the walls” or “stain”, for example. But yes, overall very pleasant!

Highlights: lucy, yellow is the colour of her eyes, crawling in my skin, bloodstream, circle the drain

Album Rating: 7.5/10

Samm 16-07-2020 05:06 PM

I only knew bloodstream prior and it was gorgeous. and I wasn’t disappointed with the rest of it, the album has a certain lovely vibe throughout. It’s very tranquil and there’s some highlights like lucy, yellow and circle the drain. it’s downside is that there’s no growth throughout the album it kinda is just one long melody almost :/ i rate albums that are cohesive but I feel like this was samey.

7/10

Yes

Soccer Mommy ends up with a respectable score of 79! We now move on to Tame Impala.

Ammi 17-07-2020 04:27 AM

...I think I’ve only listened to around 5/6 tracks so far...I was quite undecided at the beginning if it was going to be a bit repetitive...Then I listened to Posthumous Forgiveness and I was gloriously lost in a time loop......I didn’t ever want to leave..!!!...this album is actually quite stunning, I love how it time warps across decades in its styles...it’s like it’s burrowing a hole and each track becoming deeper and deeper.......

Ammi 18-07-2020 04:57 AM

Tame Impala - The Slow Rush...

...so anyways, as I’m onto my second listen atm and probably going to play it on a loop for a few more days, I’ll give it a score now as I’m really no good at music reviews...I like it, I like it a lot...it makes me want to do a dream road trip in a convertible/Thelma and Louise style but without all the awful and sad bits and not driving off a cliff..and this album would be my dream road trip soundtrack...it’s dreamy/it’s heavenly and it’s very, very accomplished and wonderful in its time travelling psychedelic style...in saying which tracks are highlights, I could probably list them all because it all feels so seamless...and then Scott would say ...is that really necessary...well, I think so but just to show a bit of restraint I’ll say...highlights are Posthumous Forgiveness, Breathe Deeper, Borderline and Lost in Yesterday...8.5/10...
