Not saying it isn't prompted by Covid - but it smacks of "Hmph well you don't want to be in the EU anyway so HA" and I think if Brexit had never happened, it's very, VERY unlikely that the same action would have been taken. I'm anti-Brexit ... but that is just ridiculously petty.

they wouldn't legally have been able to do it had we still been in the eu, we aren't any more remember. Other eu countries have closed their borders in europe during the pandemic and if it were legally challenged they would be told to open up, but the legal challenge would probably have taken 5 years to be heard, so there is that

but anyway, the border closures are to appease the public, if there were an incident like that in France, the Sun would have front page headlines asking for the border to be closed. The governments will mumble about extra precautions and open up again soon enough

I don't think the brexit atmosphere is helping.

However it's not only EU Nations now banning travel from the UK.
India and Switzerland have too for instance, they aren't EU Nations.

We've always it seems had a more sticky connection with France.

I think the new strains are genuine too plus it seems South Africa has now identified a new strain of coronavirus too.

Worrying times

Kizzy 22-12-2020 01:03 PM

As usual our attitude towards both issues stinks... Other countries quite rightly do not want exposure to the new strain, so the sensible thing is close the borders from the UK. No doubt we would all champion that should it be France for instance with the same issue.

That leaves 2 problems ...how we treat incoming vehicles bringing in our essential supplies, these people are guests in the UK, how do we treat them? Are facilities provided, toilet and washing areas..skips for waste? No. They get a parking ticket! Shameful.

Another problem is once here how do we aid the European drivers to return home? ... no news of this either.

How do they get food if they are stranded... by driving to the nearest town.

It's not ideal of course but it's not their Fault they are in this predicament is it?
I little understanding and basic human decency would be good.

Not in little Britain.

Kizzy 22-12-2020 01:26 PM

It can P-155 off!!

In general I would agree but it's been confirmed repeatedly that the strain is already active on the continent & beyond. I know they want to limit exposure to the primary source and I suppose taking as many precautions as possible is understandable, but I also think we know from experience with this virus that if the strain is active at all in those countries it's not going to be contained for long. I agree with comments above that the restrictions seem mostly to appease public pressure, and not really about limiting spread.

Again if it had ONLY been identified in the UK then it would be sensible to try to limit it to the UK... but the cat is already out of the bag . It may well not even have originated in London - again, London being the seed point for it in the UK increases the likelihood that it was imported via international travel.

800 free hot meals delivered to stranded lorry drivers in Kent by Sikh community...

Members of the Sikh community provided hundreds of lorry drivers stuck in Kent with hot meals overnight.

More than 800 free meals were made in less than three hours on Tuesday afternoon at a Gravesend gurdwara (temple), with an aim to make a further 1,000 hot meals on Wednesday.

Read more: How to fight the urge to stockpile, according to psychologists

On Tuesday, volunteers working with Sikh humanitarian charity Khalsa Aid whipped up 300 mushroom and pasta dishes at the Guru Nanak Darbar, as well as 500 chickpea curries.

That's good. I've been worried about them.
At least now they have food.
Hope they can go home to their families soon.

Just been to Wembley central and thankfully most of my favourite shops at open.
Plenty of people Christmas shopping and everyone was wearing a mask.
I need to go back later to get some food.

It had to originate somewhere, it's as likely to suppose it was here as anywhere isn't it?

I know there's the idea that foreigners come here and all they contribute is crime, disease and terrorism but thats only if you read the papers.

Good of that Community
to feed many drivers

Kizzy 24-12-2020 03:30 PM

Well done to them! Amazingly compassionate response. French firefighters brought rapid covid tests to Dover to help people get moving...Our police and councils did little other than make a bad situation worse. Ashamed and embarrassed at their behaviour to be honest.

I literally cringe at how inept we are to form a positive cohesive reaction to challenges, all we ever seem to do is go into some default mode of enforce petty rules and punish anyone who breaks them severely.... shockingly bad.

Again where is the understanding?.. where's the appreciation? Where's the effing toilets!?

I can't even with us ... my self loathing is peaking because I know my DNA is so British it makes me sick!

said that a team of territorial soldiers was being sent
to the UK to support the testing effort.]

More Help for the Stranded Lorrys
in Kent.

What a beautiful gesture  it reminds me of the Australian fires early this year and how the Sikh community came together to help those who were devastated by the fires. Such wonderful people, their generosity will help so many people.
