ROVERS landlady Liz and Vernon will tie the knot in a Corrie New Year’s Eve special.

Street bosses are planning over the top nuptials with Liz (Beverly Callard) in an extravagant dress and scruffy Vernon (Ian Reddington) likely to be in top hat and tails at the register office.

Executive producer Kieran Roberts told us: “It will be a great New Year wedding storyline complicated by the return of Liz’s ex–husband Jim (Charles Lawson) who will put a major spanner in the works.

“Liz’s son Steve will obviously be at the centre of the action, but we can’t say yet if his twin Andy will return for the wedding.”

It will be Liz's third marriage - she was wed to Jim twice in 1974 divorcing in 1997 before the couple re-married in 2000 when he was in jail before splitting again in 2005.

The wedding is just one of several major storylines planned for the soap before the end of 2007.

In the coming weeks, as seen in today's Sun young Bethany Platt almost loses her life after swallowing one of terrible teen David’s ecstasy tablets, which he’s hidden in one of her dolls.

Sarah Platt and Jason Grimshaw will tie the knot in November with her brother David banned from the ceremony. Tina O’Brien who plays Sarah is quitting the soap later this year.

Kieran added: “Tina has been absolutely fantastic and she has some fantastic storylines before, during and after the wedding.”

There will also be a new love triangle as Liam and newcomer Tony Gordon – played by ex-Peak Practice star Gray O’Brien – vie for the attentions of Carla Connor.

This autumn will also see the arrival of a new bookie and his son and Violet’s shapely sister Lauren.

Coronation Street has recently been described by some on the forums as "down in the doldrums" and "not worth watching". Until last Monday, I agreed. But, after watching the ecstasy incident and the surrounding episodes, I'm more than back into it. Autumn promises some HUGE episodes, so I'm told (I was actually caught in a lift with one of the script writers, which made for an interesting conversation). The wedding's going to be big and so is the fallout. And great news that Bruno Langley (Todd Grimshaw) was back on set earlier this week.

Meanwhile, EastEnders are currently filming the Slater-Branning wedding which is due to air around the same time as the Weatherfield nuptials and the episode during which Ian's stalker is revealed is nothing short of fantastic. I'm hoping that a certain newspaper doesn't go and spoil the ending before it happens on screen.

Fans of both Corrie and EastEnders will probably notice that the usual precedent is that when Corrie's good, 'Enders isn't and vice versa. But for the first time in a long while, they're both going to be on top form at the same time.
