Influential centre-back Roger Johnson has moved from Cardiff City to Birmingham City for £5m.
The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal which will keep him at St Andrews until the summer of 2012. Johnson is the third centre-back to join City's ranks this summer following Scott Dann and Giovanny Espinoza. "I am really pleased to be here, Birmingham are a massive club and I am looking forward to putting the shirt on to be honest," said Johnson. |

An 88th minute free-kick from defender Daniel Alves sent an uncovincing Brazil into the Confederations Cup final and left hosts South Africa heartbroken.
Alves came on late in the game and powered a strike into the far corner after Aaron Mokoena conceded the set piece with a foul on Ramirez. Mokoena had earlier sent a far post header from close range over. Steven Pienaar also came close for the hosts when his 25-yard shot was palmed wide by keeper Julio Cesar. Brazil had struggled to produce their fluent passing game and, until the winner from Alves, gave South Africa the scent of creating a similar upset to the other semi-final which saw the United States beat Spain. A mixture of Brazil's own lethargy and South Africa's industry and passion saw the South American team fail to create any concerted pressure on the hosts. |
Celtic's assistant manager Mark Venus has cautioned against buying for the sake of it ahead of the Champions League qualifiers.
Venus, alongside manager Tony Mowbray and coach Peter Grant, aim to win the tie starting on 28 or 29 July. "Obviously, we've lost a couple of players and we will be trying to bring players in," he said. But Celtic would not want to buy a player only to regret it for the next four years, Venus stressed. |

Fabregas responds to rumours Gunners skipper reiterates his commitment to club Cesc Fabregas has once again played down any suggestion of him leaving Arsenal this summer. Speculation regarding the midfielder's future resurfaced on Thursday as the Spaniard blasted the Gunners' lack of success in recent years. The club captain admitted his disappointment at the 'impotence' at Emirates Stadium which has led to a four-year trophy drought. Having already been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona or Real Madrid, his outburst only served to fuel rumours of an imminent exit. However, Fabregas claims his comments were meant only as a rallying cry to those around him and insists he remains fully committed to the Arsenal cause "I'm not sure how many times I need to talk directly about my commitment to Arsenal as I continue to say the same thing over and over again, but it appears that every time I have spoken to the Spanish media recently, my words have bounced back to England, leaving question marks about my future," he told the club's official website. "So, for anyone who is unclear or may have misunderstood what my position is, let me make myself absolutely crystal clear. I am wholeheartedly committed to Arsenal and my future lies with this great club. "It is a fact that we have not won a trophy for four years and yes, I am angry about that, but that anger stems from the deep desire I have to win things with Arsenal. "I care about this club and believe in this team. I am proud to captain this team and proud to wear the shirt. It really upsets me when people express my thoughts otherwise. "The spirit in this squad is fantastic and we have the ability and mentality to compete on all fronts for silverware. Make no mistake, we are focused and determined to show that we are capable of achieving great things together." |
