One of the most random returns ever?

Michael Cashman who played soap's first gay character returns
MICHAEL Cashman, who played the soap’s first ever gay character Colin Russell, is making a sensational return next month after 30 years away from Albert Square.

Yuppie and graphic designer Colin originally moved into Walford back in 1986.

He caused a stir by dating younger Cockney barrowboy Barry Clarke and they shared the first on-screen gay kiss in TV soap history.

Fans last saw Colin in 1989.

He had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and decided to leave The Square to move to his brother’s place in Bristol.

Bosses are keeping tightlipped about why he is back but have teased his shock return “is set to raise a big question” for his religious pal Dot Cotton.

Since the actor left the BBC show, he has become a Labour politician, was a founding member of the LGBT charity Stonewall and was appointed to the House of Lords in 2014.

Lord Cashman said: “It was a real joy, indeed a privilege, to return to my old home of Albert Square.

“To be among so many friends again and to be back in the place where 30 years ago I started an amazing journey.

“An amazing journey which incredibly helped to change the country, and certainly its attitude to lesbian, gay and bisexual people.

“Arguably without EastEnders I would never have gone into politics.”
