[U.S. says no more 'business as usual' for Russia

Outright exclusion from G20 not likely

WASHINGTON, March 22 (Reuters) - The United States
and its Western allies are assessing whether
Russia should remain within the
Group of Twenty (G20) grouping of major
economies following its invasion of Ukraine,
sources involved in the discussions told
Reuters on Tuesday.]

[The likelihood that any bid to exclude Russia
outright would be vetoed by others in the club - which
includes China, India, Saudi Arabia
and others - raised the prospect of
some countries instead skipping
G20 meetings this year, the sources said.]

It is a Massive nation
so I can see why it is best to keep
Evil Putin in it, sadly

Vladimir Putin has cited JK Rowling as he accused the West of "trying to cancel" Russia during a televised meeting with cultural figures.

There is also a campaign against Russian composers including Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov, the Russian president added in a bizarre rant.

He appeared to be referring to the cancellation of events involving Russian music in some Western countries since his invasion of Ukraine.

"Today they are trying to cancel a whole thousand-year culture - our people," Mr Putin commented.

"They are banning Russian writers and books."

Regarding JK Rowling, he said the Harry Potter author was cancelled "just because she didn't satisfy the demands of gender rights".

He continued: "They are now trying to cancel our country. I'm talking about the progressive discrimination of everything to do with Russia."

To be fair, I do agree (with Putin ... ... :umm2: ...) that wars generally have NOTHING to do with the civilian population of a country, and the people and culture should not be persecuted because of the actions of their leaders. It's what saw thousands of Japanese-americans shoved into internment camps in the US during WW2 like they had anything to do with or any say in the actions of Japan.

It becomes even more ridiculous if "general Russian stuff" like books are being banned.

MTVN 25-03-2022 01:08 PM

It's tricky because the aim is to exacerbate Russia's status as a pariah state and governments use culture all the time to increase their nations standing and their 'soft power' so it can be a legitimate tactic imo. Trying to purge historic books, ballets etc is taking it a bit far though

I just thought him referencing JK Rowling was pretty wild

The chief of the Russian army says Russia will now focus its main war effort on the "complete liberation" of the eastern Ukrainian Donbas region.

The defence ministry said Russia had been considering two options for its "special military operation" - one covering the whole of Ukraine and one focusing on the Donbas.

The comments - carried by Russian state news agencies - hinted at a possible downgrading of Russia's war aims. Russian forces have met strong resistance in the north of Ukraine and around Kyiv.

Sergey Rudskoy, head of the main operational department of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, said 93% of Luhansk oblast and 54% of Donetsk oblast was under Russian control.

Russia had destroyed the vast majority of Ukraine's air force and navy, and this marked the successful end of the first phase of the conflict, he added.

However, the defence ministry did not rule out storming Ukrainian cities that had been blockaded and said Russia would react immediately to any move to close airspace over Ukraine - something President Zelensky has repeatedly urged.

The ministry also said Russia would continue its invasion until targets set by Putin had been achieved, Ria news agency reported, without specifying what the targets were.

Could give some respite to Kyiv and hint at a more limited war

Two more senior Russian commanders have been killed - one of them apparently died after being attacked by his own men, a Western official has said.

The commanding officer of the 37th Motor Rifle Brigade, a colonel, was deliberately run over by his own troops as a result of the scale of losses taken by his brigade, the official said.

“That just gives an insight into perhaps some of the morale challenges that Russian forces are having,” they added.

However other reports suggested the colonel - named as Yuri Medvedev - had suffered leg injuries and had been evacuated to Belarus.

A seventh general (commander of the 49th Combined Arms Army) was also killed. The Kremlin has not yet responded to the claims.

Folks stil don't have enough intellectual curiosity to wonder why all of the fears are being stoked to target a minority in a culture war.

Putin
Johnson

Tories
Republicans

There's a reason, and some of you will realise at some point, whilst others don't care because it's the cruelty towards a community with insane rates of suicide and attempted suicide, they they get off on.

As our own PM said previously.
