Arrival

At first upon completion I was left confused... so I reread the plot and put the dots together. I don't know if I just wasn't paying enough attention but without reading up the plot afterwards, I'd have left the cinema feeling... eh.

Spoiler:

Themes it touched upon felt a bit "LeatherTrumpet would hate this" (ie. imploring the world to communicate for the common good, rather than listen to the wackjob on the public radio urging everyone to shoot it down)... concept of Whorfianism is fascinating and not something I was particularly aware of (but have previously considered in my own limited way when learning other languages )... and then a nice bit of time travel/destiny/"would you still have a baby if you knew it would die of cancer before it reached adulthood?" stuff.

Only thing is I felt this was all deliberately so vague that there was little emotional thrust behind the film, so I can't say I was hooked through anything other than the tension (which was, admittedly, rather well done). Its deliberate moves not to go all typical sci-fi as well in that the opening of the film is Adams' character just walking past all of the gawking news coverage, when one would expect an alien invasion film to begin all "DOWNTOWN TOKYO. ENTER: ****ING MASSIVE SPACESHIP. CITIZENS RUN AROUND SCREAMING. TAXI CRASHES AND FLIPS." etc. It was a very isolationist film that really played well into the story of Adams' character's paranoia and doubts.

I'd give it an 8 or a 9... undecided. Left the film wanting to know more about it and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Moonlight (2016) - 8/10

Finally got around to seeing this. All three segments intertwined very well I thought and I enjoyed them all, the adolescence segment in particular was my favourite. I liked the adulthood segment too

Spoiler:

The scene that sticks with me is when he goes to visit Paula and that overwhelming exchange between them before he forgives her. The haunting sadness made that scene all the more stronger I thought.

On the other hand, I was expecting a bit more from the ending? I was hoping Chiron would come out of selling drugs and do something else with his life or something along the lines of that, but I can kinda forgive it because its such a well-made film.

Overall, it's a solid film in every aspect really. The cast and acting were fantastic, shout-out to the stunning cinematography too.

Manchester by the Sea - loved this movie, i'm a big fan of Casey Affleck, he's a far better actor than Ben imo 9/10

Shaun 19-02-2017 04:02 AM

Just watched it too Niamh and it was pretty faultless. Only bad thing I can say about it is that the end came out of nowhere and I was left with the sense of "...THAT CAN'T BE IT?"

I wanted to see the next 34 years!!! It was great. Went into it without knowing anything about the plot so the heaviness of it caught me by surprise. I'd give it a 10 just because I can't fault it (and I'm generous with rankings apparently)

Jason. 19-02-2017 11:39 AM

Ooh Manchester by the Sea is on my watchlist. I'll watch it in the next few days.

The Girl on the Train (2016) - 8/10

I was worried I wouldn't enjoy this and I thought it was rather slow at first but it picked up towards the end. Emily Blunt :clap2:

Benzient-XXVII 19-02-2017 10:13 PM

Contraband (2011)
8/10 > surprisingly good for a simple plot

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
7/10 > when I first saw this 13 years ago I thought it was rubbish, but it was no way near as bad as I originally thought

The Last Airbender (2010)
7/10 > I know it's silly but I was entertained, can't believe this was rated one of the worst films of 2010 I've seen a lot worse than this

Planes 2: Fire & Rescue (2014)
7/10 > decent sequel but it just felt like the same as the first, but this time Dusty was a fire & rescue plane instead of a racing plane

King Gizzard 19-02-2017 10:26 PM

La la land

Had low expectations of it not being my thing. Enjoyed it though. Saw a lot of criticism about there being no songs that you'll remember which is pretty true I guess but weirdly I don't think it relied or had to rely on them. Was really funny which I wasn't expecting either. It was really pleasant and will probably go down as one of the greats... I still preferred Manchester though

9/10. Would have got a 10 but I am a sucker for a happy ending

King Gizzard 19-02-2017 10:27 PM

Then again Manchester's ending wasn't exactly happy so

Does this count as a spoiler? I'm sorry

Kubo & the Two Strings - lovely. Animation was fascinating and pretty much as magical as the stories it told. Think I read it was a directorial debut which is astounding given how accomplished and put-together it was. Quite a similar to style to Coraline (just seen he was an animator on that), which I liked stylistically but didn't enjoy the story too much. This was ten times the movie that was. I'd give it a 9/10 but I'd be wondering why I hadn't given it a 10.

Then watched Patriots Day... eh I dunno I felt two ways about it being made at all. Still too recent, perpetrator's still alive, and the director's previous work didn't instill a lot of hope (Hancock, Battleship)... plus there's the fact I cannot stand either Mark Wahlberg or Kevin Bacon... so I had quite a lot of bias against it before I'd even seen it. And there wasn't too much to change my mind. It felt needlessly exploitative (why fictionalise a main character? Why make a movie to honour Boston's heroism with a made-up lead?), the action sequences were too dizzying to leave behind anything actually captivating (it felt a little like watching Cloverfield sometimes, which worked in Cloverfield because of its camera style and tied into its fictional/mystery theme, but here was just confusing and loud noise)... I would say in its defense that I can't say I've seen a film like it before. Its audacity at depicting so many grim realities of very recent events is...if distasteful, quite shocking. And it's well acted by some of its minor cast, the effects are frighteningly realistic, and it could've gone down a sugar-coated Michael Bay route, but chose not to... but whatever routes it took weren't good enough to excuse what is in my opinion a pretty tasteless film. I'd give it a 4/10.

The great Wall - Meh it was a pretty mediocre to bad action movie and I was so distracted by Matt Damons accent the whole way through, what on earth was it supposed to be? It sounded like maybe some sort of a Scandinavian accent that broke into an Irish one every so often, I googled it afterwards and all I could get is "European" umm ok 4.5/10

I need a safe space after that :worry:

Oh also honorable mention to Brad Pitt in The Devils Own

Niamh. 23-02-2017 12:56 PM

Hacksaw Ridge - Been trying to get through the Oscar films and I have to say this one is my favourite so far and there's been some tough competition. I was actually putting this one off cos I'm not usually a fan of war films but it was such a different and unique story, I just loved it (eventhough Andrew Garfield is a bit annoying) 9.5/10

Don't Hang Up - 8/10

Gregg Sulkin  great movie and i was at the edge of my seat. I should have expected the ending but i didn't.

Benzient-XXVII 27-02-2017 06:43 PM

Deep Rising (1998)
10/10 > cheesy gory monster movie which I love, the end left open for sequel which never happened what a shame

The Wedding Ringer (2015)
8/10 > another comedy about a wedding, but this one was felt fresh for some reason

The Other Guys (2010)
7/10 > funny in places but it's overlong & it drags a bit

Project Almanac (2015)
6/10 > moderately entertaining time travelling film that doesn't know whether it's coming or going

Tom4784 27-02-2017 07:08 PM

I watched Moonlight yesterday, it was pretty flawless. I'm glad that Mahershala Ali got the oscar for his performance, it was a very subtle performance devoid of theatrical acrobatics but it was powerful, the same could be said for the whole film really.

I loved it.

9/10.

Livia 28-02-2017 02:41 PM

Westside Story. I'd never seen it before and it was brilliant. The music is unforgettable and I cried real tears at the end.

9.5/10

That is one of my favourite movies ever. I love everything about it. Seen it when I was younger and would love to see it again.

Vanessa 28-02-2017 02:51 PM

I want to see Manchester by the sea. I love Casey Afleck.

Tom4784 28-02-2017 08:56 PM

La La Land

Words can not describe how much I hated this film, I don't understand why it was so lauded. It's awfully dated, terribly written and the songs are complete and utter ****. The storyline is as cliched as they come and the performances were mediocre at best. It was just trash, complete and utter trash.

Easily the worst 'Oscar' film I've ever seen. Despised every moment of it's hackneyed ass.

I won't give it a score since there's not a score low enough to accurately describe the contempt I have for this film.

Tom4784 01-03-2017 02:50 PM

Moana

I loved it, It's not up there with Disney's best but it's a charming film with a mostly great soundtrack and one of the most likable princesses yet. I loved the visuals and my main complaint is that it could have done with being a little bit shorter, Some parts dragged a bit too much. Aside from that though, I think it's another great example of Disney's recent renaissance when it comes to animated films in general.

9/10

Tom4784 02-03-2017 04:01 PM

Dr. Strange

Loved the concept of it and the way they presented magic and I thought the film was enjoyable enough but it has all the same problems that nearly every Marvel film has, it ultimately has the same sarcastic tone that all Marvel films have regardless of setting or themes, the villain is simply an obstacle and not a character (Which is criminal in this case considering they wasted Mads Mikkelson on such a **** throwaway character) and a pointless love interest (Rachel McAdams is similarly wasted).

I also hate how
Spoiler:

Mordo simply turned into a villain at the drop of a hate, it was just so badly handled. It should have been a gradual process for him to descend into villainy not a nosedive.

Overall it's a good enough film but Marvel's tropes hold it back.

6/10

Benzient-XXVII 06-03-2017 07:23 PM

Justice (2011)
8/10 > I was glued to the screen and it was better than I ever expected

Your Highness (2011)
8/10 > quite funny throughout, especially when that 3 fingered monster asked for oral PSML

Exodus: Gods & Kings (2014)
7/10 > I like the 10 plagues part & the ocean crossing scene & a couple of other scenes, but overall it was rather slow paced & IMO it I was 30-40 minutes overlong

No Strings Attached (2011)
7/10 > Natalie Portman plays a psycho hopeless in love character having friends with benefits with Ashton Kutcher cue the cliche ending yawn, but I liked it somewhat
