Boss hopes duo will stay

Ferdinand's contract expires this summer, while there has been increased speculation about the future of Hernandez who has been forced to settle for a place on the bench more times than not recently.

Sir Alex says the club will be talking with Ferdinand's representatives about his future and he is confident Hernandez will not be going anywhere.

"There is no reason to think this is not the place for him [Hernandez]," the boss told reporters.

"We hope he feels as though he has made a contribution. He has scored 16 goals. When he came on the other night [at West Ham] his movement was terrific. He created a lot of openings for us.

"I thought we were pretty unlucky not to win it. Their goalkeeper made a couple of saves, one shot was cleared off the line and he was very unlucky with a header. Hernandez has got these things in his locker all the time. His enthusiasm to play is always there.

"I’ve spoken to Rio," added Sir Alex. "At this moment in time, he’s more concerned about getting opposition for his testimonial game. He’s working on that for the moment.

"We want him to stay and obviously I’m sure his representatives will be discussing things with David Gill. I wouldn’t imagine that [moving abroad] would be the best thing for him."

"I think it was a big job to do," he conceded. "The way we lost it helped us really and with the fact it was City, it gave us an incentive and you’ve got to admire the focus we’ve shown this season. There has been great focus. Our resilience and the consistency has been good. Like all previous teams, they never give in and that’s a fact.

"I think the players, once they are here for two or three years, buy into the history of the club quite well. These are the qualities that have helped us to be where we are right now."

If United do overcome a Villa outfit battling against relegation then the next target must be to end the season with a winning run that would ensure Chelsea's all-time points tally is eclipsed.

"It’s not beyond the team," insisted Sir Alex. "I don’t think it is at all. You’re asking can Manchester United win five games in a row. How many times have we done that? It’s not beyond us but I think it’s about the way we approach it."

Sir Alex is such an amazing Manager and United as a whole have done well to respond to the disappointment of last season!
