Hmm. I had hoped the numbers earlier this week were just Easter catch-up but the steady increase to over 600 is... notable. Everyone seems to have written Covid off as "basically over" but my belief is wavering.

bots 22-04-2022 07:24 AM

we could well have a new more lethal variant and we would know nothing about it

For briefly forgetting to wear a mask in a shop? :joker: I'd have been arrested 4 times over the last 2 years if it was enforced that strictly. A few weeks back I casually sauntered into the local Co op, got my stuff, paid, left and got half way home before realising I didn't even have a mask with me.

In my opinion, it's more likely that the newer variants simply aren't actually as "mild" for everyone as has been touted, and vaccine immunity is starting to wane.

the numbers should start to drop with the warmer weather, so that will be a key indicator

Cherie 22-04-2022 07:39 AM

The increase is numbers could also be due to how transmissable this variant is, so more people are dying with it rather than from it?
350 on vents across the UK out of 3,000 hospitals is not cause for concern I would have thought?

My 85 year old aunt has been called for her 4th booster so the continued vaccination of over 70s is still rolling out

Maybe but we're quite a long way into these more transmissible variants now so you'd expect those numbers to have gone up before now, unless something has changed in the last month or so. Ventilator/ICU numbers look fine but ... not to be too grim ... that only really means that a lot of the people dying have not been put on ventilator (which generally would mean it's elderly people who can often be too frail to ventilate).

we just don't know anymore. There could be any number of reasons for the rise and as we are not collecting/publishing all the relevant data anymore we are in the dark

They'll still be seeking out new strains (people are still tested on hospital admission/before procedures etc. and they'll be randomly analysing some of those) but yes in terms of case numbers, it's a complete mystery at this point. I don't feel there's much point in even reporting that number any more. It was never 100% accurate obviously as not everyone tested but now that testing barely happens at all, it could be 10x the reported number.

In fact... I'd hazard a guess that plenty of positive tests aren't in the stats. We never reported my daughter's positive LF and we didn't bother with a PCR (the line on the LF on the 2nd day was as dark as it gets). So in terms of stats, she never had it . Unless the schools report numbers I guess. Half her class had it at the same time.

They still do the random test sampling through the ONS which gives a pretty accurate picture across the country, much more so than the daily updates. That's showing that infections did peak a while ago and hospitalisations have been decreasing for a couple of weeks now as well. The daily dashboard deaths are not a particularly true figure this week either

arista 22-04-2022 09:15 AM

The left winger on LBC Live
is now debating this.

He is saying we have the highest Daily covid Death rate
in the world

It is easter catch up, they reckon it's still down at 200 a day.

If you add up the full week's numbers it doesn't really average out to that, but we'll see as we go into next week.

My friends son tested positive (year 4) so she rang him in sick...they said she would be reported to LE if she didn't send him in as he didn't have a temp so it was an unauthorised absence.

 that would be bizarre for any reason, unless his attendance in general is very low?

Id imagine most of the deaths are not because of covid

bots 26-04-2022 04:45 PM

if the deaths were because of covid, the numbers on ventilators would be much higher
